    THANK YOU!!!
I just started to knit...and I love it! When I was younger I learned how to Crochet and was intimidated by Knitting so, I never learned how. Recently I met someone who is 84, left-handed and has knitted things that look store-bought. So, I finally put my fear aside and decided I will learn from her. Well, she did her best to get me stared, but as you know, TH-cam is full of teachers of the craft. So, I went to the Tube to learn more... yadda, yadda, yadda ☺....you know the story😁
Well, today 2/15/21 I wanted to know how to neatly end rows. My work still has a lot to be desired at this point (in 2 weeks) but, I do have to say I caught on quicker than I thought.
My point for this comment is to Thank you because: YOU GET the importance of "UNDERSTANDING." That's exactly how my mind works. Most "teach stiches" and I can learn fairly well by watching and doing (sometimes at a slower speed or repeat watching; which is fine). But, I NEED to know/understand HOW things work. So, again I say THANK YOU!
PS: I subscribed after I found this video. 👍

Thank you. Your video got me wondering about the word “purl”.
“Purl is from an obsolete Scots word pirl, which means a ‘twist’. It was applied in the sixteenth century to a thread or cord made of twisted gold or silver wire that was used for embroidery. It may be that it was then transferred by analogy to the ribbed look of purl knitting, though the OED has a note saying that the derivation is far from obvious. It is sometimes spelled pearl, which may be a mistake, but may equally imply a different origin”.

Such an interesting piece of information! Thank you so much, Nancy, for digging it out. I've never actually investigated the name purl. I did encounter mentioning of similarity between a purl stitch and a pearl, and that made sense because they do look alike. I've just checked the etymology dictionary, and they too link the word "purl" to the meaning of "twist". Here's what they say:
"purl (v.1)"knit with inverted stitches," 1825; earlier "embroider with gold or silver thread" (1520s), probably from Middle English pirlyng "revolving, twisting," of unknown origin. The two senses usually are taken as one word, but even this is not certain. Klein suggests a source in Italian pirolare "to twirl," from pirolo "top." As a noun, from late 14c. as "bordering, frills," 1530s as "twisted thread of gold and silver."www.etymonline.com/word/purl#etymonline_v_2896
Thank you once again for clarifying the meaning of "purl". It's great to know the most likely etymology of this word :-)
