    The honest truth is companies sit around thinking about what they can get away with, what the bare minimum they have to do to turn a profit. They benefit by holding back features and only giving you minimal upgrades because anything they hold back now they can give to you later, to sell you a different device. This is why I respect the Odin 2. They made the best device they possibly could, they weren't interested in stringing people along for three or four minimal performance upgrades like Anbernic

    I have both anbernic RG505 and RP3 and they’re both good for the price at the moment and do the job for most retro games. At this point I don’t see a need or reason for either the 556 or the RP4 cause you can spend a little more and get a steam deck or Loki at that point

    Im getting one. I like the idea of a Retroid, but with better build quality that won't have mass issues first week out. Anbernic has a strong track record of quality for the price and a large fanbase providing support and innovation to the software. From someone with NO handheld currently, Retroid pushed me away from its presentation as a company to its build quality etc.
    We will see if I chose right.

      If you don't want to play high end stuff, I really really recommend you getting a Miyoo Mini Plus (they're like 50 bucks on Aliexpress and they do up to ps1). But most importantly, they can run OnionOS, which is infinitely better than the fragmented mess that Android is with emulation (you have to tinker a lot to get things just right, not so much with MM+, which is a set it and forget it kind of device)

    I think 175-185 USD is a fair price. I'm assuming Anbernic are rushing another product to market, because they know the T618 can't compete anymore. I'm also guessing the T820 will be their flagship chip for the year, which is kind of meh. They'll pump this device for a few months while they work on a T820 RG406P, RG406M, RG406V etc.

  • @ben-tendo
    @ben-tendo 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I'm presuming this was made without ever touching an RG556 as the feedback from people using one so far has been immense for the price... £130 for an OLED handheld that plays Vita, 3DS, PS2, Wii, GC, etc incredibly well (the 3DS at 4x resolution, Vita at 2x resolution, etc) is madness. And that's without the hall effect sticks, analogue triggers etc also included. Maybe try before you post next time. 👌

    • @VladNerd
      @VladNerd  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      People naturally tend to be very biased and attached when they make a purchase. The RG556 has a lot of things going for it. (Screen, ergonomics, etc), but performance isn't one of them. A good chunk of the PS2 catalog isn't playable, while others run decently even at 2X. I was highlighting this in the clip, tinkering constantly just takes the fun out of the device, and there's plenty of videos confirming this.
      I'm not against the RG556, it's an incredible bang for the buck for a certain crowd, but it'd be a mistake if we actively decide to avoid its shortcomings. This thing has the performance of a low-to-midrange phone, for better or worse.

    • @ben-tendo
      @ben-tendo 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@VladNerd I just don’t think your review/opinion takes the value factor into perspective at all sadly. Even if we compare it to a low/mid range smartphone. What OLED phone can you get for the money (that also takes in the cost of buying a controller with hall effect sticks and analogue triggers) capable of a performance like this? You can’t. The controller would be £50 alone, leaving you £80 to buy a new OLED smartphone that can play 3DS and Vita? Not going to happen. Therefore your angle isn’t a fair one. You can’t review Switch graphics against Series X graphics when the cost/age ratio is out for example, so the same applies here if trying to compare a £130 556 with a £300 Odin. Reviews need perspective and a comparison of devices in the same price range.

    • @VladNerd
      @VladNerd  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ben-tendo you keep saying 130 pounds, but the RG556 is actually 185$ (150 pounds rounded). Add on top of this shipping and import fees and you reach 250$ easily. For that you can easily get an Oled Poco or even a second-hand Samsung that would crush the RG556 in terms of performance.
      Plus, not to mention that a smartphone usually requires no investment because people most probably already have one that they can easily attribute a dual purpose to (both using it as a phone and as a handheld). Controllers are also cheap. A Gamesir X2S with hall sticks and triggers can be nabbed for 34$ on AliExpress these days (anniversary sale).
      The tl/dr: I know it seems like I'm bashing on this device, but I'm genuinely not. Like I said, it's perfect for a certain crowd. My job here is to inform people and have them have realistic expectations. Over hyping something is unfortunately a real trend in the handheld market, and we need to view things through a clear, objective lens.
      In any case, thanks for watching the video. :)

    I'm buying Anbernic RG556 because on my odin 2 i cannot map Wii motion controls and i cant map my GameCube C or control stick with my odin 2 right analog stick.
    But wait it's more then just mapping analog sticks which won't be mapped on my odin 2 no matter how hard i try. *It's about beautiful OLED screen, portable 5.5inch size, although my Odin 2 has hall effect analog sticks. They dont have hall effect shoulder triggers*
    And that's about it i can't wait to play games on that beautiful OLED screen. I don't care if it's not powerful as Odin 2 or Retroid Pocket 4 Pro. It's nearly has same power as base RP4 so i can live with that.
    I'm also buying Steam Deck and Anbernic RG556 this dude is definitely triggered because he doesn't have money to afford gaming consoles that he wants! 😂😂😂😂

    • @VladNerd
      @VladNerd  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It's not about the money, it's the fact that it's about as powerful as an entry-level phone and almost as big as the Odin 2.
      Whatever limitations you have on Odin, you'll have on this as well, since they both use Android.
      Bluntly put, there are better options out there for the pricetag, and my job is to inform people not to waste their money on something underwhelming, especially if they can get something better for about the same investment.
      But you're free to do as you wish. My opinion is that you'll be disappointed in it. I'd simply hate to buy outdated e-waste, and that's what this device is.

      @@VladNerd Dude no gaming handheld console from China will make as powerful as Odin 2, the fact we got Snapdragon 8gen2 is incredible. But very few gaming handheld will actually include high end specs.
      Unless they want their sales to go down as I'm sure Odin 2 base cost about 330 bucks now after tax and shipping costs. The average Chinese gaming consumer and. Westerners want something cheap but powerful so they have to keep the price down and they won't use flagship specs. The Odin 2 was a one off thing.
      As for as not being powerful I agree Anbernic should've included processor that couldve had same power as mediatek dimensity 1100. But Unisoc T820 is more powerful than snapdragon 845 which was featured on Odin Pro, and. It's nearly has same power as Retroid Pocket 4 base.
      So it can run 80% of PS2 library at 1x easily maybe even 2x after few tweaks. But that oled display and portability has won over people. I feel like people will stick out their hands full of cash 👍💵 to buy this device.
      *Now stop being a hater dude anbernic finally offering gaming handheld which has oled display, hall effect analog and triggers and Unisoc T820, WiFi 7, Bluetooth 5.3 and. Big 5000mah battery and oled screen for 170bucks which is a amazing!*

      @@VladNerd As good as Aya Neo Pocket S is it won't sell much as Retroid Pocket 4, Odin 2 and Anbernic RG556. Simply because it cost as much as Steam Deck OLED.
      And it's limited to android only, if it can play PC games and run emulators like AetherSX2, Dolphin, MMJR, Citra, and play Steam then it would sell well.
      But it's too expensive for your average consumer and its limited to android OS at that price makes it a deal breaker for many people I assume other than few gaming enthusiast which has alot. Of money to throw around to buy their fancy high end costly gadgets every year those guys aside which are minority in gaming community this won't sell well with your average consumers. Who want something cheap that can play, PS2, GameCube, Wii and be portable and Anbernic RG556 and RP4 does that job well enough to sell good because of their cheap price tag. *especially Anbernic since it has oled display for.
