- The story of Honoré Daumier isn't a particularly happy one. Despite his immense popular success as a humorous illustrator and caricaturist during his lifetime he was somewhat consumed with resentment that he failed to achieve similar success as an artist. As someone who never had the slightest ambition to be a proper artist I struggle to imagine why he just couldn't have been happy with the hand he was dealt. But that's creatives for you, I suppose.

Pete, I absolutely love your videos! I work as a freelance illustrator and you biographies of this art form have been invaluable to me personally. It's help expand my creativity in different directions. I so appreciate you and the work you do.

(30) Wow. Monseur Daumier sure had a real burr under his saddle when it came to the serious lack of morals in French society at the time. Interesting how many different types of societies seem to have almost a cycle of really cruddy people running the show. Terrific upload, Mr. Beard; quite a shame he had such a bloody rough go of it.

I have great admiration for Daumier's skill in depicting caricatured figures and faces (those expressions!)… It's sad to know an artist so revered today had such a difficult life, financially. I can lump him in with Van Gogh as the "If they only knew…" category. Thanks for this deep dive Pete!

Thank you pete. Love your work. Im a watercolourist living in America, Mum and Dad were welsh immigrants 1963. Both went thru WW2 Cardiff area. My Dad now watches you and the memories you bring him are very happy, along with some sadness. Lifetime fan.

Thanks for the video, Pete. I very much love Honoré's drawings and I think it is a shame that with such good drawing skills he was not able to capitalise on them more than he did. Maybe if he had stuck to his drawings he could have added book illustration to his repertoire.
Interestingly in the 1960s and 1970s many British male politicians had pear shaped bodies. Just look at Ted Heath and Harold Wilson.

Remarkable Biog, sad though! Elements of Daumier's story remind me of Van Gogh; the prolific consistency; the unrecognised/uncelebrated talent; the few friends that made all the difference; the being Posthumously Commodified, which, as you said, wouldn't've been 'of any use to the man!'. At least he didn't give up, eh? - Sobering to think that, most likely, he actually had more success than most Artists. I'd never heard of Daumier before, Thank You for educating me about him, Pete.

Oh this fella! I remember seeing Daumier's name and some of his caricatures in an old high school art text book many years ago. This was a fun way to learn more about his work.

Thanks for the comment. I don't know about Nast, but tennel would have been very familiar with his work. Punch was billed as "The London Charivari".
That last image at 13:17 makes me think he could have had a regular job at MAD magazine like Wally Wood or Mort Drucker.

Another really interesting expose. Daumier represents so much in the way of social commentary, printing techniques, how magazines presenting this work were in constant danger from the authorities. Amidst all these dizzying subjects surrounding him, the beauty of his line work, his shading and in his paintings that amazing light he employs. Just one of my favorites. Thank you!

Honore Daumier was and always will be considered an artistic genius who looked at life and recorded the world he saw in front of him. He rarely sketched from life but stored up the information of people being people, relying on his memory to work from. In today’s society we see so many people looking at a mobile phone rather than looking at the life we are in!? His contribution to the Art world must never be underestimated.

One of the greatest artists..a book on his work was the very first book I bought as a professional…I could finally afford it..I bought a large book of his work..still one of my favorite books and one of my favorite and influential artists ..I love his drawing …

Another great video about one of my early heroes. Discovered Daumier in high school and been a "student" of his ever since. One of my highlights of my 14 years in Paris was finding Daumier's grave in Pere Lachaise (and even with a map, not that easy to find!). A sad story indeed, but familiar. How many Artists (and I use the capital "A" for all artists; painters, musicians, writers, etc), that feel their commercial work is only good for earning a living while "higher art" is more to their liking (I know Gershwin was frustrated because he was usually considered "just a song writer"). Ironically, the commercial work brings more joy and inspiration to people and usually outlives the other work. There's a lesson in there somewhere, but a better man than me can ponder it. Me, I'll enjoy the "lower art" of book illustration, cartoons, and comic art. Thanks for this tour of Daumier's work, Pete. Finally bright and sunny here in Provence, hope some sun is shining on you and the missus. Cheers!
Hi again, and like you, Daumier (and Grandville) were very early discoveries when I realised that not all great art had an ornate frame around it. And I do struggle to work up significant sympathy for those who carp about not being recognised for whatever it is they think they are best at. It's one thing to fail completely, but to resent the creative activity that pays the bills really does smack of the prima donna to me. And please don't rub it in about the weather - it's like the rainy season in Rangoon here as I type this. If only I could persuade my co-dependent that life would be better nearer the Med.
Absolutely love Daumier's satirical work. I never miss a chance to visit the case of bronzes whenever I visit the AIC, here in Chicago where I live. How did the AIC end up with them, and not somewhere in France? Thanks for this terrific vid -- I'd never heard of Grandville, so, TY for that!
Hello and thanks for your appreciation, and in case you didn't know there's a video about Grandville on the channel too, which I think you might enjoy. And it is odd how things end up where they do. I recently went to Venice and there are only two Canaletto paintings in the whole city - many more in London.
Daumier has always been one of my favorites. His "the accused may now have his say" (you left it out) is one of my absolute favorites from his legal series. But he did an equally scathing series on doctors!

Very tragic. Funny though, I didn't know anything about him or even his name before yet I've been using one of his characters as my profile picture ever since I've made this account not too long ago! His work lives on.

Weighing in regrettably late on another masterclass. This was a historic, artistic and emotional tour-de-force --- and a humbling forced re-evaluation of my own scant knowledge of Daumier, whom I had always lazily and unfairly lumped in between Hogarth and Nast as a kind of generic pillar of social satire/caricature. This essay revealed him to be so very much more---and your stark, perfectly-toned narration on the relentless tribulations of his life and career made him extremely alive and relatable, and as you mentioned at the end, an ironic monument to the whims and vagaries of time, public taste, and unforeseen happenstance.
Thank you Pete, just wanted to say that this was a magnificent entry, unexpectedly moving. (I will make a concerted effort to stay up to date, I imagine you are extremely busy with fresh installments and have little time for tail end add-ons to the comment-thread, which is perfectly understood!)
You can weigh in any time you like - I still get comments about videos I made 7 or 8 years ago, and they are all (well nearly all) welcome. I'm very pleased to have fleshed out the memory of Daumier for you and it seems quite a few other viewers.
Ned from Spain stopping by for yet another beautifully researched and presented history of one of the great illustrators and artists. So thank you Pete. Daumier was courageous, amazingly productive and influential but as you pointed out kept running into difficulties and setbacks. I would like to request a video on Belgian artist Felicien Rops. Strong and controversial material but an incredible artist. Would that be possible ?

Regarding Felicien Rops I have wondered if he would make a suitable subject but always come to two conclusions which have stopped me. First he was overwhelmingly an artist and illustration wasn't his primary outlet. And secondly much of his work was too sexually graphic to be shown on youtube (and I have fallen foul of their censorious ways before). But he is a fascinating subject and I will take another look. But I stress I can't promise that I can overcome these potential barriers.
Wonderful! You know I often wonder if anyone illustrates as they do in the late 1800s to early 1900s, and if they did how well it would be received today.
Well I see that you for one are at the very least influenced by the likes of Rackham and Dulac, and you are creating fascinating fantasy work. And I'm glad to say there are others out there who are keeping some of the traditional values alive. More power to your elbow.

While the name Honoré Daumier did not ring a bell, the image at 13:33 of your video did. I know I have seen this illustration of a man (presumably an artist) with a famed artwork of a candle. I'll have to do some digging. I may have seen it in a book somewhere.

somehow my university had this fairly large broad collection of Daumier works which I was able to view in person. at that time I had had little exposure to art and I think I did not like his work because of how the images looked grotesque and unflattering. on later visits (sometimes many years apart), I grew to admire more of his skill to capture important details of a person and yet exaggerate them to express a clear view or idea. I liked the bronze busts as well and did not realize (or remember) they were after effects of his ceramic works. the background of his painting was interesting and I'm not sure I'd seen those. thank you

Daumier seems to belong to a select number of artists, that penetrated the human condition and tragic mystery. His cartoons all contribute, but his paintings are profound , and their visual simplicity complex.

Interesting career and human story. A lot of sad events, from the persecution by the authorities of the time to his failure to achieve popularity and respect as an artist during his lifetime. However, I also found refreshing to hear how Daumier's friends had often come to his rescue.

I can't understand why his art didn't catch on. Had I the money, I'd buy any one of them.
I think he maybe suffered because he was too far ahead of the curve with regards to impressionism. Even those who came later were originally laughed at and ignored.
Pete, maybe sometime we can get a video on Louis Icart?
It's a possibility and he has been pencilled in for a future appearance if I can find enough material to use. But please don't hold your breath - there are dozens of others already in the pipeline I must deal with first. So much to do, so little time.

It would be interesting to do a comparative study of Daumier's influence on the style of Punch magazine in England.
Thanks for the comment, and both Daumier and Grandville did have a major influence on the Punch illustrators during the Victorian age. Funnily enough I'm considering a video about that period of Punch and obviously the parallels would have to be drawn. When/if I get round to it, given the others waiting in line is anybody's guess, though.
