    When I was younger and my eyes were better I used 22 to the head. I was lucky. I knew someone that had a lot of Pecan trees and when there was dry years the squirrels would eat the pecans long before they were ready. So I got paid 50 cents per squirrel and got to keep the squirrel. At that time 22 shells were about 50 cents a box. The first one paid for the ammo and rest was to help feed the family!

      Yes sir, if I’m just hunting squirrels and not trying to film I enjoy the challenge of the .22. Self filming and using a .22 is really time consuming. I use to get paid $1 per turtle shell in a neighbor’s pond when I was a youngster. I’d sit for two to three hours after school one afternoon shooting them and a couple days later walk the pond and pick up the turtle shells for my pay. Good times.

      I am using pellet but unfortunately I can't get them all they are too many and when there is nothing for them to eat I use live trap and keep catching them ..in my area I don't think I can use fire arm

      @@sam70000 I use pcp pellet for squirrel quarry, very quiet and clean to the head under 30 metres, and I don’t shoot if it’s not a clean shot in respect for the animal, very rarely need a second shot to put them down if it’s on target. With pcp, the group don’t scatter too much either 👍

    Really nice insight into your culture there, brother. In the UK we have no tradition of eating squirrels - I guess our native reds were always too small and since the American grey has only been ubiquitous here for around 70ish years, times have never been hard enough to really need to eat them. I'm going to have a go at trapping some and will use this method for processing them. Also, your grandpa's tip of removing the underarm glands I haven't seen anywhere else and so it will live on over here with me and whoever i pass this on to. :)

    I wouldn't think you could tender up an older squirrel just by steaming on the grill...a young squirrel yes, but older squirrels need a pressure cooker for about 30 min. and then fried till golden brown! The scent glands under the forelegs is a good point....there are also glands on the rear legs between the body and the leg...young squirrels don't usually have them but older squirrels will.

  • @bluewater454
    @bluewater454 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Never knew about removing the scent gland. Great to know.
    Just as an aside, you might want to think about changing up your choice of weapon for squirrel hunting. I discovered pcp air rifles a few years back, and I wouldn’t use anything else for small game now. They are quiet enough that you don’t scare away everything within a mile with your first shot. I can sit in one spot and hunt all morning without scaring everything away. I was raised on shotgun hunting, but im addicted to pcp air rifles now.

    • @HuntinwithHattaway
      @HuntinwithHattaway  ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with you. They’re just too expensive in this point in life for me. Raising 3 kids cuts down a lot on the wants vs. needs. I do watch several channels with dressed up air rifles with expensive cameras mounted everywhere. Can’t help but be a little jealous lol

    • @bluewater454
      @bluewater454 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HuntinwithHattaway Yah, it can be an expensive hobby, but don’t let the pcp hobby channels scare you off. If you are just look for an accurate rifle that will get the job done, there are options. Gamo and umarex put out some decent rifles for just a couple hundred bucks. Beeman has a budget rifle called the QB Chief. 189 bucks. Accurate out to a hundred yards. You also need an air supply, but you can start out with a hand pump. I started with a used 3000 psi scuba tank I bought at a dive shop for a hundred bucks. After that you are set and the ammo is cheaper than regular firearm ammo.
      Don’t let the high budget pcps scare you off.

    I recently learned if you let meat sit a few days it's WAY more tender to eat. Keep it cool in fridge around 3 days and the rigor mortise goes away. Meat relaxes and much more render. If ya cook same day they are tough

    • @HuntinwithHattaway
      @HuntinwithHattaway  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A lot of the toughness is associated with the age of the squirrel. The best to me are the 1 year old squirrels. Generally we soak ours in saltwater mixture 3-5 days before cooking or vacuum sealing. Aging them definitely does help.

    • @JohnnyRebKy
      @JohnnyRebKy ปีที่แล้ว

      @HuntinwithHattaway That's definitely a factor for sure. My grandparents would boil squirrel and rabbit before frying to make them more tender. I never did it though. I may try it this year

      Lol like the meat from the food bank is treated better! At least wild game isn't packed into crowded pens, force fed before being slaughtered then the meat pumped full of colorings. These tree rats at least got to live a little first :)
