    Nice video, very informative ... thanks for sharing, people need to get back to the basics in terms of natural food and living. Especially with all the gmo, cocktail of chemical and drugs in our food, no wonder so many people are not healthy today.
    Thanks for being a mentor sharing with us,
    God bless

    This video made my buy a hunting license this year and take my 20ga out to the woods. Got three squirrels first time out. Going to be trying your recipe. It looks great! I had such a great time in the woods hunting. Cant wait to get back out there. Giving thanks to the lord was the cherry on top! God bless and thank you so much for the video.

    So I'm completely new to the world of hunting and providing food for my family. I'm only 18. I have yet to get any of my hunting licenses but I plan on getting them soon. Right now I'm trying to learn as much as possibly on how to cook the game I proccess in the field. Any tips or tricks to help me start off with cooking wild game like squirrel or deer so I can use that information for the future?

    • @jfsoutdooradventures2384

      Cook all your game to at least 160 degrees or 165 is better, keep it at that for 3 mins. In hunting wild game digital thermometer is your best friend. If the temp gets above that its fine but t doesn't need to be. Being a year later you probably now know this. Lol. Maybe this will help someone else then. Hahaha. Happy hunting!

    Thanks for the comment. My goal is to help lots of people "get it" when it comes to engaging the real world. Our food should be more than commercially packaged pabulum. The process of hunting and fishing and foraging deepens our appreciation of this world and our role as stewards of the great gift of nature.

  • @field2feast

    It's most important to get the squirrel field dressed quickly. I think the meat would be ok for a couple of hours before getting it in a cooler. I used to hunt squirrels in Arkansas and never had to worry about spoilage.

  • @field2feast

    Getting at the backstraps would be the hard part. The intestines and gall bladder need to be safely separated from this area. I just find it easiest to remove everything at once. Good question.

    i saw a comment above and may i add. if you boil any type of meat, you boil away the flavor, and then replace it with the flavor of the water or seasonings you put in it.
    anyways, i noticed when you were cutting the green onions you were doing the pointing grip and just chopping the knife down on them. if you just pinch the back of the blade and just rock the blade back and forth (not saw, but like a see saw but keep the tip on the board) you will be faster and more efficient :)

    As a boy in London during WW2 I used to raise rabbits to supplement our rations. Here in Thailand my garden is inundated with squirrels who enjoy the bananas, mangoes and anything that takes their fancy. As I've reached old age I have been reluctant to kill anything , but your video has got me to thinking about popping a few of these rascals off and cooking them up. Retribution? Maybe. But they may now have to take their chances. Thanks for the video.

    I didn't know about the glands, but I cut out all the fat, so I must have got them out. Also, I pressure cook my squirrels for 20 minutes with Tony's Spice to flavor, and tenderize the meat before I bread & fry them. It makes it quicker and tastes as good.

  • @beboboymann3823
    @beboboymann3823 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great vid.....I want to try your recipe. Here in our part of the south, squirrel and rabbit are most often fried....granted we change up the spices from time to time but fried is king. Also, "milk" gravy made with milk, drippings, and flour salted and peppered to taste goes great with homemade buttermilk biscuits and the fried meat. I think your method would produce a more sophisticated presentation as well as providing a much more tender meat. Way to go.

    I love these videos and have followed all the squirrel hunting series. I am planning my first hunt. The last question I have has to do with what to do with the meat after field dressing the squirrel. Is there some preparation that must be made before storing it in the freezer or before cutting it up to cook? Asked another way, do I bring the field dressed squirrel home and put it in a pot of salt water? I heard that was necessary to draw out the blood. Is that a good idea to do. If so, what is the ratio of salt to water and how long should it remain in the solution?

    Excellent video series! Gonna give this a go in a couple weeks. I have one question though. I know a lot of people like to make squirrel for breakfast biscuits. Is there a good way to end up with boneless meat, to make this possible? Keep up the great work, and good hunting!

    • @field2feast
      @field2feast  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Slow cook the squirrel in a crock pot and the meat will fall off the bone. You will still need to remove the bones before adding the meat to a gravy or sauce.

      I used a brine on duck the other day and it came out great. I imagine it would work well for squirrel too. about a 1/4 cut salt for about 4 cups water, plus some seasoning. For the duck I dissolved the salt and about equal amount of honey into the water, let it cool, and put it in a ziplock bag with the meat. Brined for about 48 hours in the fridge. Rinsed, patted dry, and browned in butter. Real easy. The salt and sugar breaks it down so it stays moist and tender.
