Duel Masters PS2 - An Underrated Gem

  • Does anyone remember Duel Masters AKA the most underrated trading card game that tried competing with the likes of Yu-Gi-Oh, Pokemon, and Magic: The Gathering? I do, and it's so sad that it's been overlooked for so many years!
In this video we're gonna take a look at the Playstation 2 game and see what made it so dope!
Editor's Notes: I already know about the glitchy-looking gameplay in the footage you see and that's because I was using PCXS2 to run the game. Under normal circumstances, the game would have been playing without issue, but because OBS was being used to capture the gameplay, the emulator couldn't handle it and started causing graphical glitches.
Also, the reason why I cut out the interviews with both players is because the interviews shot the video's runtime up to nearly 40 mins and I wanted to avoid bloat.

A few things I need to clear up:
-The reason for the framerate drops in some of the footage you see is because of PCXS2 not playing nice with OBS running alongside it.
I tried everything I could to increase the speed of the footage.
-The music I chose for Trey's segment was admittedly ill-fitting.
I for the life of me could not find the soundtrack for the Nature Preserve in the game so I added in the Deck Building track in its place.
Not gonna lie I should've added in "A Vow of Unity" from Tales of Vesperia.

Tbh i love the gba games too .
Its still a huge shame this card game failed in europe and the US .
Back then i was oversaturated with Yu-Gi-Oh because you saw everything , the cards getting more and more power creeped after every booster and i was pretty fed up with its lack of consistency of its monsters and its designs .
I switched up to Duel Masters because i found one card on the school-floor during break (It was Deathliger) and i was suddenly hooked and wanted to play this game .
I mean huge mythological Monsters , Kaijus , Badass armored humans with destructive firepower , gore y hellspawn , ancient waterbeasts , untamed monstrosities from the nature ?
It hooked me from the beginning and still to this days , i praise this card game to heavens . It was edgy , fast ,and consistent with its artstyles and somehow with the world of it too .
Right now im playing the Digimon card game which almost plays like Duel Masters but with different approaches that aint totally the same .
But if Duel masters someday return , you can surely count me in !

Duel Masters also blew me away with the unique monster designs and with how different it was compared to Pokemon TCG and Yugioh.
The flavor text was better, the card designs and even the borders and backgrounds looked more unique, and it was all-around fun.
I've also gotta look into that Digimon game you mentioned. You mind giving me a name? I'm curious now.

OMG, I LOVED Duel Masters Cobalt growing up! You were right about the non-monster animations being kinda wonky, but I still enjoyed the game overall and wish they made a sequel to it with more of the TCG cards and updated 2D animation.
IMO, Luc was the only main character with a good story. It focused on him building his rank up from the start, the antagonist from start to finish was the Light antagonist Sera, whom got him disqualified and whom Luc defeated, took her role as leader of the Power Plant, and humiliated in front of the Light Guardian Illium. Rusty and Tre shared Marcus as their main antagonist in their respective stories, while Caitlin and Earl (their respective rivals) only had minor roles. Rebecca had Jalen (her Water rival) in her story, but Sera was always with him and both were overshadowed by Widow who held no real weight to Rebecca's story. Flynn and Marcus hardly even interacted all that much in Flynn's story, as Flynn was all over the place with Source.
Not only were the story animations wonky, but so were the respective storylines. Regardless, I still loved the game, I just wish they did as good a job with the other 4's stories as they did Luc's... But I'm just rambling... 😅
I actually got back into watching the walkthrough of the game and now I've even began collecting the TCG cards and building mono decks IRL! I never got to invest in and play the game as much back when it was here in the US, but now, I can at least buy and collect the cards and build the decks! Hopefully, I can find some of those decidated fans/duelists out there to play with in the future, but for now, just getting the cards themselves after all these years feel great! ✨✨✨

    • @lunarnocturne
      @lunarnocturne  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

This game has the potential for a good sequel! Sucks so much that they never made any kind of follow-up to it.
Luc's story was also my favorite. I love that style of story where he's worked his way to the top, but lost everything through no fault of his own, and must prove and fight his way back to where he was at. The aftermath of the battle with Sera felt so good to watch.
Marcus was also a fun antagonist because of how cocky and in-your-face he was. His interactions with Tre are always a treat and give me flashbacks to the rivalry between Ash and Gary in the original Pokemon anime.
Caitlin had potential to be a fun antagonist just based off how little we see of her, but I guess they couldn't find a good way to make her a main antagonist.
When it came to Widow being directly related to Rebecca, the lack of any kind of huge dilemma on Rebecca's part really took the wind out of what could've been some good character-building and interactions between the two.
As for Flynn and Source... Flynn was just doing his dirty work because... reasons!
Getting my hands on what was released in the U.S is one goal of mine. The artwork and lore is so amazing and I'd love to run battles against myself with cards that were released outside of the video game itself.

@@lunarnocturne Right?! I hate that there was no sequel or follow-up to it. I wanted to play cards like "Fighter Dual Fang", "Armored Blaster Valdios" and "Ballom, Master of Death" in that game SO bad! TwT
Right? Same! I also loved it when Illium just yeeted her and Widow from the Light Civilization when they tried to accuse Luc of cheating again. That was SO cathartic considering what a jerk she was throughout Luc's story.
And agreed, I loved Marcus as an antagonist too, I just wished he was used in Flynn's story as much as he was in Rusty's and Tre's. He could've been the perfect foil to Flynn's stoic nature.
I also loved Marcus' interactions with Tre too, but tbh, I'd have loved it even better if it was Earl in Marcus' place there instead, because not only would it have had the two Nature rivals pitted against each other, but you'd also have a farmboy with a Southern accent (and a fan club no less) talking the same kind of smack towards the underdog Tre. Tre could've worked his way up from the bottom the same way Luc did, then steal all of Earl's fans the way Source had Flynn do, earning a second and final shot at Earl who would've had the remaining pieces at the time.
And speaking of Ash and Gary, you just came up with the perfect dynamic for Rusty and Caitlin! She could've been the Gary to Rusty's Ash! Rusty does remind me a lot of Ash! They could've competed over who'd get the most pieces first before their final duel over who gets them all. Rusty would've earned Caitlin's respect the same way Ash did to Gary with the two of them being possible frenemies.
And agreed regarding Rebecca. They could've stretched the familial ties further and had Jalen and Sera as Widow's kids, making their playful teasing towards Rebecca and Jalen's disgust towards her in the beginning more understanding, with Widow pitting Jalen and Rebecca against each other, playing favorites, adding that huge dilemma for Rebecca's character and story, and adding more character building and interactions between the three.
And yeah about Source... But he could've had everyone do his dirty work for him where it benefitted each of them, like Tre handling Earl's Fan Club (as I mentioned above) or Rusty provoking Caitlin in the Tournament Hall... X3
OMG, SAME!!! That's why I'm getting them and not those Kaijudo cards. Both the art AND the Duel Masters card frame are amazing AND nostalgic! And I intend to do the same with running battles against myself using all of my favorite cards once I get all of them. I do the same with my Future Card Buddyfight decks! It's great to know I'm not the only one who does that! X'3

The TCG and this game had so much potential to be bigger in the West! I feel like it was written off by fans of YGO and Magic because people thought it was trying to chase after the success that YGO had. Not only that, but it didn't sell pretty well here either. The anime is still fun to watch for as cheesy as it was.

Great video! Admittedly my brother enjoyed this game more than I did but looking back it was a decent game. Looking at it now the Americanized anime style is much more noticeable but I rather it than whatever the GBA games did. He’s supposed to be the oldest but he sounds like a 12 year old with a lisp. Not to mention that it doesn’t vibe with the personality his design would suggest. game's worst than i remember. it was so limited than the actual card game. PS2 game can only have 5 creatures total to summon. The card game itself there isnt a creature limit. Then there's how the game handled mana zone, you dont directly tap mana cards to play your creatures and spells. PS2 game just had it as a generic energy source of orbs.
Most of the artwork and human models style looks like fake anime design. There are actual japanese anime artist in the game but barely used over western fake anime artists. Just so disconnected from itself.
The creature animations and music are great i agree but those are the only things it has going for it. Overall, not underrated, just mediocre for the most part.

    • @lunarnocturne

This makes me wonder why the PS2 version was limited in terms of gameplay.
My guess is that they wanted to make the game easier to approach, especially since Duel Masters had just come out in the States at the time.
As for the fake anime design, I feel like the guys that worked on the game used some kind of free software or something cheap, and called it a day. That animation style is ROUGH.
I still think it's underrated but it's a matter of personal opinion.
