- It's been 1400 days building our dream homestead and we've done much to get ourselves closer to self sufficiency. This recap covers the first 4 years on the property, all our animals houses, gardens, orchards, some great stories and is a farm tour at the same time. Lots of fun, lots of good info about the Hidden Spring Farm. #homestead #farmlife #selfreliance
SUBSCRIBE and help support the channel. And don't forget to drop a comment. It helps us to build this channel into something special. We're transforming this 90 acre property into a self reliant homestead and farm stay vacation rental. We're building infrastructure to accomodate future growth such as barns, duck house, 7 coop chicken house, water hydrants, planting an orchard, building a garden etc. Chickens, ducks, geese, mini pigs, rabbits, a bunch of barn cats and two old english sheepdogs make up our team here at the farm. Please follow along on our journey of transforming this place into something special.
…and the duck parade really cracks me up 🤣🤣🤣

Thanks a million 😉

A big ❤️
Good morning! It amazes me at how much you have accomplished in 4 yrs. The farm is so beautiful. I see the love you give all your animals and the love and enjoyment that they give back to you and your wife. For not having any experience building you have done a great job of building each of them their unique home. Each one does have their on job and everything works together. You are a great guy and I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS. GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR WIFE and all the animals of the farm.
@@milliealford8968 so glad to hear it, thanks for all the support ❤️
Loved the four years overview. My favorite homestead. Hope Nigerian dwarf goats are in your future. They are like puppies. Milk, cheese and butter. Your individual animal homes are an inspiration. Wow every time I see them. God bless you and your darlin for being such loving caregivers.
Hi Chad. I love Thursdays as I always look forward to catching your video. Have a great day 🥰

Thanks for posting. You guys have done so well with your little piece of paradise. My 8 month old and I love watching your wholesome content. Keep chugging along my friend.

Absolutely love these videos. ❤❤😊

I never get tired of seeing these recaps. Plus kitties...
Awesome!!! 😎
Excellent video! 😀 Very good updates. Loving the sky views. It gives us a real accurate understanding of your structure position choices. It is really coming together nicely. Everything is looked after, neat and clean. All aspects of loving care are easily seen. I think you have created the "modern homestead 101" program. Yes, it will go far beyond this....
You are inspired my friend. 😊
20:56 Dexter sure does love you… I absolutely adore the way he comes up and hugs your legs like that asking for pets and scritches…. He's a beautiful farm panther!
He’s the only cat that will do that. He’s also the only cat that will sit in my lap cuddling for a long time. Trouble is he’s so super comfy he starts making biscuits on my arm with his huge panther claws 🐈⬛
@@HiddenSpringFarm LOL… yeah those "biscuits" hurt when they make em with those big ol claws! My Maine coon has HUGE paws and when he makes biscuits, I sit there and cringe lol…. I’ve been quickly shoving a blanket in between my legs or stomach and his claws lol…. But you just can’t tell them "no!" lol man they have us trained!
Thanks for the update. I’m amazed at all you have accomplished considering you have full time jobs on top of everything. Well done ! ❤❤❤
Even I’m amazed. I just go project by project, keep making videos and all of a sudden I’ve built 7 cool houses for the animals. Time does fly when you’re having fun 🤩
I really enjoyed the tour!! It is an amazing feat in all that you have accomplished!! The farm is a testament to your hard work and determination. I hope and pray the future has many more successes and much happiness for you and darling!

Well it is time to get ready for work tonight so have a safe and fun weekend and will see you all on Monday. My Felix says MEOW to the Claw Crew. lol
Every time I watch your channel, I catch myself singing, "Old McDonald, E i E i O"..... I usually hate singing. But I can't help it. Keep living the dream!

I can’t believe Billie and Bobby were that tiny ! 🐷 🐷

Yeah they were smaller than Fozzy back then. We got them when they were 8 weeks old.
I discovered your channel a few months ago, and I love it! I watch everyday so that I can catch up. So many wonderful videos. It makes me want to build something, or grow something. I am long retired, and enjoy watching whenever I get time because you and your wife are so kind and gentle. Now my granddaughters have started watching too. Thanks for the wholesome and kind things you guys do.

You have an amazing farm, those days of hard work are paying well with the fruits and the vegetables. I hope you can continue a lot of more years and that we can watch you grow
So nice of you. It’s so cool to enjoy the fruits of our labour 😁
I have one indoor black cat, Mini, and one feral black cat, Flashlight. I have Flashlights grandma, Grandma, and earlier this year a beautiful, long-haired young kitten born down the street decided to adopt us. Her color was just like your Olive, so I name her Olive in her honor.

Congratulations on 4 years. Thank you for sharing your story. I love watching, and my grandsons think your channel is pretty cool. I love your cats. I have 4 cats and one stray. Plus 3 neighbor cats. Keep up the great work and tell your wife I love her garden.
Wonderful progress. Makes me dream of my own homestead. Of course, I'm realistic enough that my autism and executive dysfunction would totally prevent me from ever achieving any of this stuff, so I'm happy I can tag along homesteaders such as you instead, from the safety of TH-cam. Thanks!

@@Livelii yup very well spent 😁
Look forward to every new episode of Hidden Spring Farm, such a chilled out way of life.
What does Olive the English sheep dog eat, she seems to have more energy with each new passing episode.
Fozzy the cat is some character, he must be the most chilled out cat that I have ever seen 😂
Fozzy has only one speed. Olive has the benefit of farm fresh food that my wife makes, usually duck or chicken with a bunch of veggies and rice…slo cooked too.
Olive is better fed than me, think I better be having a word with the long haired general (Wife) lol 👍🏴
@@JamesR5 ROFL!!! My husband says the same thing when he sees me making the food for my two dogs and two cats… my cats get a raw diet of chicken, salmon, liver (chicken or beef), eggs including their shells which I dry out in the over and then pulverize into a fine powder to add along with extra vitamins and minerals topper when I give them their food and the dogs get fresh chicken, fish and liver, veggies and rice cooked in a pressure cooker… they get the same vitiating and minerals topper as well the eggs and pulverized shells… the only real difference in the cats diet and the dogs is the dogs get a cooked diet with rice /veggies and the cats get a completely raw diet… I also make the dogs their own baked treats… the kitties, well I admit, I get them the catnip flavored temptations treats…. They LOVE them…. Lol
Chad such a wonderful video ❤👍This video is awesome, getting to see you and Remi’s beautiful farmstead transformation. So much hard work, but so very worth it.🤗Fozzy has a funny little”I’ll get there whenever “ strut😂
Yeah there’s never any sense of urgency with Fozzie 😂
You and your Darling have done a great job. Maybe you guys can tap some Maple trees for syrup too and have a sugarhouse there.
Well now that I have a sawmill that’s exactly something that’s in the plans. Mill up enough lumber for all sorts of cool projects including a sugar shack and our forest is full of sugar maple trees 🍁
I really enjoy the content you share with us 😊

Wonderful recap Chad! I miss Molly in this video though, I have to say. I remember the days when there were just the two of you
As do I. Making this video I mulled including a segment about her but thought against it since this kind of video is designed to get new viewers. (Although all the regulars enjoy it too) most channels have videos just like this that go to the hundreds of thousands of views if not millions. I need that too 😆
@@HiddenSpringFarm A big hug from Spain, you've got one of the best channel on YT, love it!

Fozzy is still my favorite tho 🐈

He's the king! All must serve him…. Including Chad 😂😂😂😂
Wish I knew how to build stuff like you
Can you talk about the orchard before and after if having ducks and geese has made a difference in decrease pests over all greater harvest from your fruit trees …….also nut trees add nitrogen to your soil and are good companion trees to your fruit trees….. you can also feed your access fruit or damaged fruit to your pigs and rabbits it would help in the winter months with your feed bill 😊
Chad: Fozy you can jump over the fence ya know!
Fozy: why? You serve me so well puny hoo-mon! Now open the gate!….. good hoo-monnnn
He’s got me so well trained 😂
@@HiddenSpringFarmthat he does…. 😂😂😂 I could just see him saying that to you…. I mean, he is the king of the farm after all! 😅😅😅😅
I’m only 2 hours away from yooooou ❤ (Peterborough)
@@joshuabrown4007 sweet! As a kid I used to go to Peterborough all the time for family gatherings cause my Aunt lived there.
Try some Sugar Baby water melons solid dark green and look like a large cannon ball. Friends grew them near Olcott Beach NY, right across Lake Ontario on a large farm.. Do you have another water pump above ground to give you water pressure from the well?
Not exactly sure but we may have planted some sugar babies. No extra pump, the pressure is great though. There is a bladder tank in the basement that’s for the house. The well is artesian hence the hidden spring name, there are 4 aqueducts under the farm and the water is rated in the top 5% across Canada 🇨🇦
Wow! Incredible talent! I love how joyful you are and how much fun you seem to have though it's such hard work. Where'd you get your building skills?
Aww thanks, honestly I just honed my building skills as a diyer over the years. A hobbyist really.
I'd love to live like this but it's impossible in the UK unless you're a multi-millionaire to afford the land. I've thought a lot about moving over to Canada but it takes so long and costs a fortune as well. I wouldn't mind staying at your air b'n'b some time though.
Canada is super expensive too, we were lucky enough to get into the real estate market back in the 90’s. Only way now is to buy so far away from cities. UK is so much smaller than Canada too with more people so it must be worse over there eh.
@@HiddenSpringFarm It costs millions for any decent amount of land and off-grid living isn't as big over here. Scotland is still pretty empty and it's better than England, and much cheaper too.
What would you do differently about the chickens Chateau?
Cement floor…. That’s the biggest difference… easy to clean up after and do t have to worry about rats digging through to capture the birds and killing them…. 😢
Yes maybe a strong floor or at least wire cage in the floor. I’d do the flashing and roofing differently as I have a leak or two. I can still do those things it’s just finding the time and energy.
Wow, you have done so much in the short 4 years since you've been on the farm.
But I have one question. For two people, why do you have so many fruit trees and such a large garden?
Have a wonderful weekend 😀
👋 from 🇨🇦
aww thanks that’s an easy one. It may seem as though it’s a lot but really the fruits will still take many years before they are in abundance and when that time comes, we just keep what we want, share with guests, family and our animals and don’t forget wildlife get a lot too. Also it looks as though we’re growing a lot but in fact we fail a lot too for example we have a lot of pumpkin plants growing right…but no pumpkins and it’s almost mid August. Not sure when they fruit but it seems pretty late now.
Also about the garden it’s about variety so as it seems there are so many beds there is a good variety so not too much of one thing.
Could you please give us idea about how much you had to pay to by the giant homestead? Is it near million dollar?
...a little bit " to fat to fly fozzy"😂😊....
Thank you for the video, wonderful to see all the progress! Been following since I started seriously considering buying a farm as well. Do you feel that you've "needed" all 90 acres or how much of the farm are you using right now?
I've been looking seriously at a 15 acre farm that I realistically could afford in 1-2 years, I think that might be enough but I might hold off until I can afford >30 acres to get some woodland as well. What would your advice be? Realistically I think I'll start out as a part-time homesteader and work towards full-time over a period of years.
Get as much as you can manage… you can buy a large area and start off small but still have all that extra land as you are ready to grow! If you buy say 15 acres and in 1-3 year you find you could really use another 15 but there isn’t anything next to you, what do you do? Sell what you have, buy something bigger and start over? Ugh… that would get old really quick in my mind…. Chad may not use all of the 90 acres he has, but he has it for when he's ready to add to what he is already doing… I have a 163 acre farm that I grew up on and another 160 across the road that my grandparents owned when they were alive… my uncle and his son live on that land now… our lands have been in our family for 8 generations now with the birth of my great niece! I'm about to move back out to the farm I grew up on and build a small house out back behind the house I grew up in… my daughter will be able to have it when my husband and I move into my parent's place to help take care of them when the time comes… our family has always taken care of our elders in their golden years and I plan to be no different…
That’s the best way in my opinion is part time, see what you enjoy first and what you can handle. We chose this property for many reasons and I wasn’t particular about 90 acres. Price ultimately dictated, but also I knew I wanted a forest. Also because we have 40 acres of hay it was easy to get farm property taxes which is super discounted as long as it’s zoned agricultural/rural. Reality is we didn’t need 90 acres it’s just as we were looking we found this super private and beautiful property that needed work and wasn’t fully developed. Think about it, if we sell this property now with all the work we’ve done it’ll be worth a big bundle. This topic actually needs an entire video though right. I’ll work on a script 😉
@@HiddenSpringFarm excellent way to word it Chad!
And yes…. A video would be awesome :)
Random question, what dewalt miter saw do you use? And did you buy a miter saw stand from dewalt or did you make your own?
I had this Ridgid brand ms-uv stand already but I upgraded to a dewalt dws 780 it’s a 12” double bevel sliding compound miter saw
@HiddenSpringFarm thank you!
How many cats do you have
7
Everything is awesome, but you know you have to sterilize the cats. Even better, you can adopt some cats from a nearby shelter. Otherwise, you will end up with 1000 cats.
