I love the old Matchbox kits!! I remember when these kits were in the hobby shops back in the early 1980s! This was one of the better kits (but I have always been quite smitten with the '109). I also still have a few of the old unbuilt Airfix 1/24 Me-109E kits! I so enjoy watching you digging through these old kits!!
I still have the Dauntless kit by Matchbox. It's been sitting in my "to build" pile for 15 years. You've inspired me to get started on it. The old Revell and Matchbox 1/32 kits have always been my favorites.
I first saw this kit in 1987, and it would take me 28 years to buy one. I really enjoyed building it and it's my on top of the list of my favorite kits in my collection.
I do remeber getting the Spitfire 1/32 Matchbox kit in kind of the same box (I was too young to build it, so my dad did that for me at the time), funny thing of course, the kit was bought in Germany... And only a few years ago I visited the same shop again... well sort off, the shop itself wasn't there anymore, just a window with a reverance to their newer shop.... no Matchbox there anymore I'm afraid, only Revell and Märklin.
Hi from France I'm 56 now; and I was 10 the first time I bought a Matchbox kit. So Matchbox is so nostalgic for me (more than Heller...) I must admit that at the time the local dealers only had Matchbox kits to sell (drugstore, gas station...) The first time as saw a 1/32 Matchbox kit it just blow my mind, whaououououou that was such a huge box... and very expensive... to expensive for a kid Thanks for your nostalgic videos and your passion for Matchbox
Bought this beauty with my Xmas paper round bonus back in 80 or 81. Splendid kit that went together really well. I'd love to get another and, now I'm much more experienced, do it justice this time. Great vid and thanks my friend....
I have this kit, and I built it a few years back. I didn't glue the wings on, because they fit so well! It allows for easy storage. I rotate my planes out in my display case from time to time, so it's a nice unexpected feature.
I got this kit as a present from my uncle in 1978. It was more than a handful for a 10 year old, but I still managed to build it. IIRC the German stencils were a little bit odd for they were partially misspelled. And, of course, there were no Swastikas included. But then again, this is owed to the § 86 of the German criminal code over here. You can put it on a model, but you have to cover it somehow if you take it to a show or plan to show it in the public. While looking at your splendid review, I am tempted to get me another one. I love building old kits. I don’t need an overengineered 600+ parts kit.
I remember driving to my nan’s in the east end and going down the A-12 we always passed the lesney factory! It’s not there anymore obviously! (It’s the opposite side to the Olympic site). Every sweet shop had model kits and matchbox car’s and penny sweet’s with dinosaurs on the little wrapper’s!!! Far better time’s than nowadays!!! I built loads of matchbox kits! (Probably really badly!), Wish I still had them now!
recuerdo este modelo BF-109 a 1/32 . hoy en dia lo conservo , tambien construi el douglas dauntless 1/32 tambien lo conservo.. Que buenos recuerdos buen video !
I seem to remember reading on a forum that the tooling for this kit is no more. Certainly the Spitfire has been re released at one point by Revell, but this kit, which was arguably one of the best 1:32 aircraft that Matchbox ever did, has never been seen since Matchbox ceased trading.
Years ago a friend of mine started this model and the Hasegawa at the same time. The Matchbox kit was far better and it looked much nicer when finished.
Thanks for sharing Peter. This revew is a real treat. I think this kit was Matchbox's very own 'finest hour' and still have mine in the attic, though without its box (I do have the instructions though). Odd colouring aside, this kit had just about everything a younger modeller needed in a larger scale yet was easy to build and had lovely touches like the instrument panel, engine and gun bays-what a feat of engineering this kit was, especially back in the day...I bought mine in my local toy shop in Ireland, for a whopping £6.99 in the early 80s but have to say, it was worth every penny...!
I remember my mother getting this kit in about Xmas 1977 or early 1978 around the beginning of high school age,I had prior to this only probably built mostly Airfix,Matchbox or Revell 1/72 airccraft prior to this,& I thought it was totally awesome, yje multi coloured plastic, ease of the build.,larger scale & awesome detail, later on in 1979 I bought it again with my pocket money whilst staying at my Uncle & aunts place at the time,I did it that time in the Romanian eastern front markings?,I also got the Mk. 24 post war Spitfire kit to go along side it too,Llater on around 7 years ago I got the Revell re-release of the Spitfire but was totally disappointed with the revist of my youth experience from '79 sorry to say?,& never fully completexdit, even though it all started out well I think?,bring back the Matchbox,multi-coulerd I say,but keep it reasonably priced though but?,gteat review, many memories, cheers
Real A nice Kit My Dad buy me that when I was 14 I laid in Hostspital with a broken leg And he bring me that Nice Kit with a Book about German Fighter Aces Nice Memories Great Kits at this Time Thanks for Show that Greetings
I built this one aged about 11 and loved it, I was banned from painting due to my mums concern about the decor (she probably had a point) hence the multi colours of matchbox were always welcome. Was great fun and the first time I heard of Adolf Galland. I gave up modelling in my late teens discovered girls and cars. Went back to it in my late thirties and now have ridiculous collection of 1/72 has kept me sane with health challenges and a demanding career over the past 20 odd years. Funny a 1/32 kit gave me so many happy memories as probably only one in that scale I have ever built.
Hi John...remarkable how similar your story is to my own...my parents were only too keen to get me Matchbox kits each week to avoid the Airfix ones that needed painting....👍🏻
Funny that our experiences were so similar. I got a lot of pleasure out of many 1/72 Matchbox kits with their colours and to their credit they did a lot of often obscure British stuff that still stand up today like the Stranraer, Heyford, Halifax, Walrus and Wellesley. For youngsters the colours were a good idea and maybe something that could be revived I know the likes of Hobbyboss now do very simple assembly kits and some manufactures have tried pre painted stuff - to me it is all good if it gets youngsters into the hobby. Not everything needs to be super detailed for a sometime unreasonable rivet counting demanding adults.
I have the 109, Spitfire, Tiger Moth and 2 Dauntless kits. They're quite inexpensive at a model show here as it seems many believe it doesn't stack up to newer kits? PFFFT I could turn that in a real show stopper without to much fuss and have alot of fun doing so. Built the 109 twice, the Lysander, dauntless and spitfire at least once. They're pretty robust kits as well, I remember playing with that 1st 109 alot as a kid and she held up well to it a real solid model.
Peter, a real blast from the past for me! This was the last kit I built around 1977 prior to starting work down the pit. It's only taken me 43 years to get back into modeling! It's still a great kit and one I have a deep affection for as with all Matchbox kits.
Hi John, I hope you are staying well. It's one of Matchbox best kits, I think. I made it in 1977 in a crashed-in-a-field diorama and it looked great! 👍🏻
Another great video of a great classic Matchbox kit! Spencer Pollard built this several years ago and it was featured in Model Airplane International. I think it was the November 2016 issue, if I remember correctly. Thank you for this review, Peter. Cheers!
I built this exact kit back in the eighties, a lovely build, but I only had brushes to paint it, the airbrush is far better for a nice finish in the painting, after all they were painted using a spray gun on the real things.
I built this kit in the 80's, and I was not a good model builder. The son of a guy my father worked with came to my parent's place, while I was at school, and smashed the crap out of it. I'd like to get a copy of this kit and build it again, just to be nostalgic.
How mean of him!? You should have a look on Ebay as they come up from time to time. Then you could build it even better and erase that unfortunate memory. 👍🏻
Got one of these for Christmas in the 80s. lacked the ability to build it properly at the time. Just bought a boxed kit that's far from pristine, missing the clear parts and the decals are curled and cracked. However, I can build mine with a clear conscience that I'm not building a mint boxed example.
Loving these videos Peter, brings back memories of going to the local newagents every Saturday morning and spending my pocket money on a new Matchbox kit, which I would then build on newspaper on our kitchen table. I can't remember the name of one particular kit, but they did a superb civilian floatplane, I think it was 3 colour - white, yellow and black. Would love to see a vid of that one.
Hi Peter, another great classic review 😊 I’ve taken advantage of the bank holiday to spend some time at the work bench (currently a 1973 release Revell 1/32 Beaufighter) with you keeping me company as I go thru your back catalogue. You frequently lament on the lack of stands for more modern models and while searching in the spares bin I’ve come across 4 vintage Matchbox stands, 2 of them complete, 2 without the top socket. They are 6cm and 4.5cm long and as I have no use for them would you like them?
Thanks Tim, but I am ok for Stands. It was nice to hear that you find me entertaining enough to have me on for long periods in the background...😆 I also do this with other modellers vids on TH-cam when I am building. Thank you very much for supporting my channel, I hope you continue to find it enjoyable.👍🏻
If your going to build this scale you wouldn't get this kit would you. If your a collector different story. It looks nice but it's not like the kits out today.
@@Peter-Oxley-Modelling-Lab Sure I get what you say it's lacking in detail that rely needs to be there, for me at least. I'm building a 1/48 109 at the moment and it's no comparison. I would get it at the right price though 😛
I still don't understand why history is being deleted, it happened, get over it, regardless the Swastika us a, I believe, a religious symbol from the Hindu religion, but reversed. So whilst I understand I think it is historical rewrite
Had this one as a kid and it still would make a great build even up to modern standards. In my regard, this is one of the best MB kits ever made.
I love the old Matchbox kits!! I remember when these kits were in the hobby shops back in the early 1980s! This was one of the better kits (but I have always been quite smitten with the '109). I guess you'd have to scratch build a spotting scope for Gallands version. Great review, sir.
I found the quality of the decals to be remarkably good for their age

Another of the 1/32 Matchbox kits that was excellent was the Puma helicopter.

All these classic matchbox 1/32 aircraft are available in Revell boxes to build, so no need to use up a nostalgic old friend.

I'm surprised that Disney didnt sue Adolf Galland for breach of copyright over Mickey Mouse

very cool, btw i know the kill marks originated in ww1 but like you no idea why or who started it lol.
What seems odd to me is why they are 'bars' and why they put them on the tail? 🤔
The 1/32 aircraft kits by Matchbox were not bad for their time,I thought that the Lysander and tiger moth were excellent.
I HAVE THE MATCHBOX 1.-/32 SPITFIRE

You need more lamps.
The Hasegawa kit was trashed....
