    Some of these PMs are much better known by their titles than by their personal names. Henry John Temple is usually called "Palmerston" and Edward Smith-Stanley "Derby" and Robert Gascoyne-Cecil as "Salisbury" to name a few.

      Until the 20th century, it was quite feasible for a Peer to become Prime Minister, when the two houses of Parliament were almost co-equal. After the 1911 reforms, the Lords became a shadow of its former importance, and it would unheard of for a Prime Minister to come from that house.

    2014 Scotland: We do NOT want independence.
    2015 Scotland: Let's all vote for the pro-independence party.
    Only in this country.

    • @b0ll0cks1978
      @b0ll0cks1978 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      probably to do with quite a few of the 2010 LibDem and Labour voters going over to the SNP having been disappointed with their Party either being in government with the Torys (2010-2015 Con/LibDem government) or sharing a platform with the Torys (Labour and Torys during the Scottish Referendum).

    • @b0ll0cks1978
      @b0ll0cks1978 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Yeah, but why did SNP vote go up by 30.1% on its 2010 performance. I think that has a lot to do with the Labour backing the no vote in the indy referendum in 2014 (so siding with the Torys) and the LibDems being in a coalition government with the Torys between 2010 to 2015.

    • @b0ll0cks1978
      @b0ll0cks1978 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Pro-Independence parties got over 50% of the vote through in 2015. Also, the amount for pro-Indy parties and the actual pro-indy vote is very similar.
      >Cameron had promised a Brexit referendum in 2015 to occur if he won the election. Scotland wanted to stay in the EU, so this would have pushed voters to the SNP.
      Labour and LibDems both opposed a Brexit referendum so Brexit doesn't explain it. What does is Labours and LibDems staunchly unionist positions during the Scottish referendum.

    • @b0ll0cks1978
      @b0ll0cks1978 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @Reckoning We're talking about the 2015 General Election in Scotland, where the SNP won 50% of the vote and The Greens won 1.3% of the vote. If we were talking about the 2017 General Election or 2016 Scottish Election you would have a point. But then I wouldn't have said that the pro-Independence Parties had the majority of the votes since that would be wrong.
      'If you combined all of the Scottish votes for pro-union parties such as Conservative, Labour, Lib Dem, Greens...'
      From the Scottish Green Party wiki page

      'It is the only party other than the Scottish National Party (SNP) to both support Scottish independence and have representation in the Scottish Parliament.;

The Tories have held the balance of power for at least 2/3 of the time, and at least in recent years, have maintained power in quite cynical circumstances - ie not because people adore them, but through bittersweet ambivalence at not having anything better to vote for (as an anecdote I don’t personally ever vote for them but can accept when they win, hence not being a childish leftie who throws hissy fits when votes don’t go there way - as one would if they truly appreciate democracy!)

    Thank you for this. As a child I had a circular "argument solver", as it was called, which gave by rotating a lever on a paper wheel, all the Prime Ministers from 1832 onwards with their parties and terms of office. I lost it somehere along my life's way, so thanks for providing this. I know all the PM's with their dates strating from Asquith.I shall try to keep senility at bay (now called Alzheimer's in order obviously to make old age sound like a disease and thereby sell more medication) by seeing that if I can extend that and learn the British PM's and their dates from Walpole onwards. By the way, has anyone ever managed to name all the Popes by heart? That would be a challenge! Harmless fun but also reminds us of the vanity of human life and the brevity of fame, especially poltiical fame. Someone so important today, a dim memory, if that, tomorrow. I saw Harold Wilson in The New Maple Inn in Vauxhall Bridge Road since demolished a few years before his death and am pretty sure I was the only person there who recognised him. Harold who? Vanity of vanities. All is vanity.

    What I find interesting is the sudden swings from one party to the next, it's like, relatively small variations in the vote then suddenly a surge for the opposition and so on. The pendulum swinging in motion. Following this logic, an opposition party should surge in front of the Conservatives at the next election albeit it's hard to see it being Labour so maybe Lib Dems or Brexit party.

    • @CountScarlioni
      @CountScarlioni 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It's something of a trend in British politics that the Tories persevere with the status quo until the outrage from society over unsolved social problems forces them from power. Their replacement comes in and enacts the changes the Tories lacked the moral courage to make. Then, when people are sick of the modernising party (be it Liberals or Labour) - usually because they went too far in one go or their changes weren't as advertised, the electorate place the Tories back into power for a while and the cycle begins again.
      Tories sometimes come along who are smart enough to stay ahead of the game and try to head off their opposition by making very un-Tory changes. For a recent instance David Cameron legalising gay marriage. Or a famous example from history being Disraeli giving the working class the vote in the 1867. He knew the next Liberal government were going to do it so he tried to take the wind out of their sails by "dishing the whigs".
      As you have noted here, most people would expect the cycle to repeat at the next election with the washing out of the Tories for their austerity dominated sufferings inflicted on the country. However... because of the whole Brexit issue/fiasco. Because of a current Tory civil war. Because of Labour being run by a incomparable imbecile. Because of the change from tri-party politics to full multi-party politics. Because of the weird polarised left-vs-right rhetoric going on globally.... it's nearly impossible to predict what happens next.
      It seems to be now an age of coalitions. First the Lib Dems, now the DUP. Like much of Europe, Britain may from now on be governed by cooperating parties rather than outright winners. We shall have to see.

    I think this video can be confusing for a lot of people who have no idea about the history of British politics. For example, the Liberals were not until recently big advocates for the mixed economy and large state, they used to be concerned about free markets and civil liberties which they have since relaxed their views on. Although it is nice to see the change in party popularity amongst the years it doesn't illustrate the political orientation of each of the party's and that time.
