As a person who also went slow on drinks and smoking weed, whos really battling social anxiety and being super self conscious I learnt to deal with my situations as they come, I couldn't be infront of people a lot, was a very closed person, a very shy person, my dad always fueled these thoughts telling me how shy I am and how I have low self esteem, I felt love in church, met people who made me comfortable with myself, good friends who value me for who I am, God has really been great in my life!!

I stopped drinking alcohol today. I’m not an alcoholic but I’m almost 50 years old. The side effects of alcohol are bad the next day for me. I’m tired of it and how I feel after I wake up the next day. I don’t want alcohol ever again and I won’t smoke cigars anymore as well. It’s just the right thing to do for me and my life. Great story and I am very proud of everyone that stays strong. Make the hard choices and never give up.

Edgar, I pray for continued healing and recovery. You are more than the addiction. You are much much more.
My brother has struggled with alcohol addiction for many years. He was deported from the US and even though he had an opportunity to attend Uni at home with all the tuition paid upfront, he quit without our knowledge. He would leave the house and go to dingy alcohol houses in the slum.(We later found out)
His wife has left him and come back for the children but is at wits end and about to leave again.
He has not he’d a si for job since returning g and refuses to go to interviews yet he has many many connections. Alcohol has taken over his life.
He most recently was in a bad accident (driving drunk) but as soon as he was released from hospital, he went back to drink. I feel bad for him. Please pray for him. I pray for you

Ohh man, am glad I found this. I feel you on the social anxiety and feeling self conscious in social scenes. It took me a year to finally and courageously say NO and not have to explain myself, it felt...freeing to finally not try and immerse myself in social scenes that only made me unhappy & anxious. This decision comes with a smaller and supportive circle, the difference is am happier in it.

This should be watched by many of us out here. I find that quite a number of us Kenyans have an unhealthy relationship with alcohol, to fill up a lot of emptiness within us. You just need to observe our drinking habits to see this. Who said we have to drink to get drunk? And who said that one must drink in order to have fun?
Thank you Edgar, for you open and candid talk. I wish you only the very best in your life. May your healing journey from your past traumas continue, and may your future (especially family life that you will one day have Godwilling) be one that's filled with love and happiness, and a total change for the good, from whatever it is that you experiencef in the past. All the best.

Anne thank you for sharing. I am 5 years sober now and I also really had days I was extroverted because of alcohol. Each time I say I do not take alcohol, the probing starts, why, what happened, just one drink, etc. People expect a tragic story and I do not have any. The time tragic things happened, I never quit I was still drinking possibly more in those moments. I just had enough of the alcohol. I have social anxiety, I realized that alcohol made it worse when it wore off.

Hi thank you for your honestly and vulnerability. You are so easy to relate to and I see myself in a lot of this. Especially the way my personality changes and I become so much more socially fluid with alcohol but inside I’m actually shy and reserved even though I love having deep conversations with people.
I am 60 now and I decided that I wanted the next decade to look different than the previous ones have, with my habit of drinking alcohol regularly. I didn’t get bad hangovers but my anxiety and depression slowly crept up and overall mental health had slowly declined and I wasn’t understanding the connection to alcohol use until I started educating myself and watching videos on TH-cam.
I’m two months off of it and I don’t yet feel completely amazing but I’m in for the long haul and I will be patient. I love hearing other stories and it helps me stay the course. Thank you.

This is very familiar. I haven't managed to quit but I have made some headway in learning not to drink more often than not. I still enjoy alcohol; it has been a great gateway to deal with a lot of repressed things that I would never otherwise have dealt with, however, I respect those who no longer use alcohol. That's my ultimate goal.
