In episode 97 of Whisky In SV, I did a review of the latest release from Angel's Envy: their Triple Oak expression which is a blend of bourbons finished in Hungarian, Chinkapin and French oak barrels. This bottle is priced in between their regular port-cask-finished bourbon and the store picks which are a hair under a Benji these days, so I was very interested to see where it stacks up in terms of value. I am generally not at all opposed to taking a young and/or mediocre spirit, and finishing it to make it delicious; and in general, most of Angel's Envy's products follow that formula and are hits for me. However, I found that in this instance, the triple oak finish did nothing in terms of rounding out the graininess and only worked to add a bunch of not-so-pleasant bitter notes to it.
