Re: American Away fans not attending games
For Professional games it just isn’t feasible. As a Houston Rockets fan, our nearest opponents are 4, 5, and 6 hours drives away (San Antonio, Dallas, and New Orleans, and this is the league with the most nearby). Games usually start at 6 pm and last 2-3 hours, so a hotel stay is guaranteed, god forbid the game isn’t happening on a weeknight where using vacation is not required. Basketball and Hockey get 40 or so of these games every year. If you are a fan of a team in another city, you just go watch your team when they come to town. You aren’t going to get mugged (outside of Philadelphia), just so long as you aren’t being an asshat.
College Sports are the exception, tournaments/neutral site games are aplenty, and Football (Handegg) has away sections for visiting teams (a lot of it occupied by students and the visiting team’s band).
