    many people are falling into the "keeping up with the jones" trap. if you don't have the newest big brand name equipment you are looked down on by what is becoming the yuppie's of bushcraft. I say screw em, buy and use what works and much of the surplus items are the ticket, thanks.

    • @Rambooutfitters
      @Rambooutfitters  9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Ibpn Definitely agree. I like that "Yuppies of Bushcraft" I never cared for the expensive brands because it has a name on it, when I can get something better for cheap.

      Nicely put. I've never been one to keep up with the Jones because A, I don't like the Jones and their top of the line name brand glamping isn't for me and B, I have a family to think of so I buy used Mil-Surp whenever I can. Cheap and cheerful is my approach to Bushcraft/camping.

    One advantage to wool and other natural materials is that they don't melt to your skin in a fire. Synthetics may be lighter and more effective as insulation but they can melt in a fire and cause much more serious injuries or death. Just another consideration to think of when deciding what gear you want and how it will be used.That canteen is likely to freeze up on you in any serious cold. The French have a very large metal canteen shaped like the USGI one, it has a wide short mouth and its easier to break through ice when it does form or you can melt snow and ice in it.

    • @Rambooutfitters
      @Rambooutfitters  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Billofthenorth1 Agreed my friend. I choose wool every time over new materials. Yea the canteen will definitely freeze in harsh conditions as any probably would. In normal winter conditions it would do quite well however.

    During the summer soak the wool cover of the canteen , the evaporation will cause your water to cool

    Thank you for the video! I always thought that surplus gear makes camping out a heck of a lot more special and meaningful. When I was a kid, my father hooked me up with US military gear when I was in the scouts. That gear was by far the more superior of other gear I saw that the other scouts had. It's so much more memorable. I still have the same gear. It's 30 years old and still in near same condition. I would like to mention that the felt on those canteens can serve as another use. If you happen to be near a water source, you can dunk the canteen in the water and get the felt wet. Hang it up in the shade and a breeze will cool that felt down and it will act as a type of refrigerator. Your water will be cooler in warm weather. Thanks again!

    • @Rambooutfitters

    Does the heart good to see a younger generation rediscovering how good of quality older gear is. Even if it is repurposed , although not mentioned wool retains its warmth when wet unlike cotton , quiet , durable . & long lasting all this plus got it at heavely discounted prices . But remember where it came from & thank your forefathers.

    Always choose if you have the option, the bags with the push thru button fasteners on bags, ammo mag carriers ect....much better than buckles for quick acess...Thanks!

    I like messenger bags more than the gas mask bags. More pockets and compartments, and about the same price. The magazine pouch and a messenger bag are all I need for an extended stay in the woods. I will say one thing about the DooRag, or whatever it's called. I wear one at times, though I've heard them called fifty different things. Anyway, they make extremely large, one hundred percent cotton ones, and they're great because you can use them for all sorts of things when out in the woods. Stick several in your pack, and it's amazing how useful they can be. They do have to be 100 percent cotton, though, or they won't do many of the common bushcraft tasks they're perfect for.

    Yes, military surplus is definately the way to go for inexpensive high quality outdoor goods.
    Like you I discovere gas mask bags! I knew about rucksacks and small ammo pouches but was wanting something for an edc bag or man purse I suppose,lol. These are extremely useful being able to always carry the basics without stuffing your pockets full. I was looking at Varustaleka, a Finnish surplus site I like because they have a huge selection, great prices and best of all reasonable shipping and found a German gas mask bag that is awesome because its waterproof(I live in a rainy environment), its about 10 to 15L I guess , flektarn and has a really cool method of one handed easy securing that is brilliant. The way the Germans use a custom attachment system-the straps attacj to the back as opposed to the sides allowing it to hang just right for super easy access. This is what is so brilliant really is the thought behind the ease and speed of access has obviously been very thought out. Lol, can you tell I love this thing? Oh, and it was just $19 CDN!
    My next fvaorite "deal" was as new Swedish M90 combat trousers for $40CDN. The build quality and design is stunning,the large geometric camo pattern is pretty cool too looking almost non military.
    I have made this observation of military vs civilian outdoor wear. Civilian is much more focused on weight while military is focused on durability. Also civilian is focused on aestheticswhereas military is strictly functional and obviously usually camoflauged whichh some like and some dislike.

      you are exactly right,its made for young guys who have no problem carrying these bullet-proof loads...i have some gear from my time in the service which makes this old guy struggle now lol..backpacks are real bad about that. MAD Punty Can't disagree with you there. It definitely can add some weight. I just love gear that doesn't break coming with me to some of the crazy places I go. I try to put knowledge in my head as well so less gear needs to come with me. Knowledge weighs nothing.

    I think your water just might freeze if it gets below 32F. The cover is designed to keep it cool in hot weather. By keeping it wet the evaporation will cool it down.
    Great vid by the way. I use mostly army surplus myself.

    • @Rambooutfitters
      @Rambooutfitters  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      imaplugger You are right that it helps keep it cool in hot weather, however they also help prevent freezing. Now if it gets into the negatives then it will obviously be less effective. Thank you my friend and can't go wrong with some surplus.

    Got some British army surplus Osprey and Arktis pouches for £1 and £2 each on Ebay auctions along with some old Soviet gas mask pouches. Didn't pay more than £10 for the lot. They're now stuff sacks, med kits, mountain bike tool kits, my cook kits fit perfectly in a couple. One new Zulu (or is it zebra) pouch for the Crusader cook kit costs £15+ and my gas mask pouch fits it better for £1.75. I know you're right about the wool stuff I just don't like it but I've compromised and bought a wool blanket as they do come in handy almost every time your out.

    • @Rambooutfitters

      jelkel25 Thats great my friend. I do the same with all my surplus, just re purpose it for other uses. You can't go wrong with a wool blanket. I agree all wool gear is not for everybody. I have friends who can't let it touch their skin.

      @jelkel25 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      tallthinkev Yeah, I've heard (from Americans) the US Army sleep systems aren't as well made as they used to be they still look good kit to me. The only surplus place near me as a kid used to sell all his junk to kids, he sold me a British Army sleeping bag that should have been burned about five years before and it gave me hell, haven't touched one since, maybe I'll look into them again, I really like the British Army Basha's (tarps) and I'm starting to like the 58 pattern Osprey water bottles.

    1.The wool looking material on the aluminum canteen is so that when you wet it, it cools the contents!
    2. Aluminum leeches into the water, or food, when it is used for canteens and cooking or dining lates and pans... Enjoy that Alzheimers... Me? I have stainless steel canteens...
    3. Some surplus is good. Those Swiss camo ponchos for really cheap on BUDK work for me!

      @Rambooutfitters  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Patrick Patrick I can see that serving a purpose for that through convection. I do know that it helps keep it from freezing in cold situations as well though. I use stainless 99 percent of the time so I don't disagree with you there. However, it takes so many grams of aluminum to be ingested to even see serious effects. Drinking/eating out of it every now and then isn't going to hurt you. I've done some in depth research of the subject and found it to be less frightening than most people make it out to be. Agreed we can't know all things. Thanks for watching and the input my friend.

    • @jelkel25
      @jelkel25 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Rambooutfitters Yeah, just picking on the aluminium you cook with is a little like complaining of someone smoking a cigarette during a house fire. There's aluminium in deodorants and many sorts of creams (including ones for babies) then there's all the other pollutants and toxins we breathe in or ingest everyday. I read up on those studies done on the brains of people with Alzheimers too and it MIGHT be a part of a secondary contributor but they don't know as aluminium was one of several metals found in these peoples brains.

    • @clinnyboy
      @clinnyboy 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Rambooutfitters I've done some reading on this aluminum thing and it seems to be debunked now. Not the danger originally supposed to be. Flouride in water and toothpaste is a tad bit worse I'd say not to mention lead fillings everyone had in their mouth at one time.
