    I found mine on eBay in the late 90's and have subsequently seen them at military surplus stores. This pad is a car camping beast that I have used for a dozen trips to Baja, each lasting 4-12 weeks. It is really heavy, at least 5 pounds yet way better than my thermarest base camp for extended use. I have not punctured it even though I am usually camped among the cactus and other pokey things for weeks and weeks.Go for it!

    Slept on one of these many times in my 20 yrs. in the military. The most comfortable way to use it is inflate it to the point that when you sit in the middle, your button just barely touches the ground. when you down on it , it's really soft an still keeps you off the ground.

      I can't find these on Ebay. Do you know the year the one above first came out and when it ended about? Now all I can find on Ebay are self inflators and do not have the 6 baffles. Thanks.

    Hey there Jon,
    How are you? I'm guessing it's around 2.5 - 3lbs. That's a rough guess. I will get a scale out and see how much she actually kicks in at. You are right about a pump too!

    We used these when I was in the Corps back in the early '80s. The ones we had always leaked. Eventually we would not even attempt to blow them up. Just used them as a ground cloth. I hated carrying the weight. The slang term we used for them was "rubber bitch".

    My dad was in the army, and got to have it. So I asked him if he got one. He showed me it and im like. Thats so cool! So i layed on it, and it was so comfy.

    I used this in the 70's and 80's. it will definitely give your lungs a workout. If you got one that didn't leak, and did not have to turn it in a half dozen times, you were lucky. I have one i brought back, and i love it, still has the rubber stink after all these years.

    The ones I bought were fabricated in 1985 and went through a pre-inspection in 1986 and then fully passed and inspected in November 1987 that's what it says on the box, the sealed box

    They are much more comfortable if you inflate them slightly less. it does not have to be rigid , it just needs to keep you off the ground a little. That's why they are so thick, so that you can leave them a little soft. Over inflation makes them as hard as the ground.

    • @TheOutdoorGearReview
      @TheOutdoorGearReview  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Ian,
      I have never had an issue with overinflation. With this sort of pad it would be rather difficult to do actually.
      Be well.

    I use a single air mattress, air mattress pump and single sleeping back from Walmart. I roll my sleeping back and then tightly wrap it with the air mattress and put it in the sleeping bag storage bag. The air mattress pump inflates and deflates the air mattress in less than 20 seconds. All this for under $100! You're welcome campers :)
    A bonus for motorcycle campers: this setup can sit on your passenger seat and makes a great backrest for long rides.

    Like Carlos, I had one back in "78", and it was NOT new issue....I know they had them in Nam....a BEAST to inflate and heavy as a rock, not a stone.....if you are car camping or campground camping, not hiking....it's a good pad....the will loose inflation....they never did hold air well....this is NOT a choice for back packers....UL or otherwise....it is a beast! But they do work well...still fairly well priced in most surplus stores or on line...e-bay and other places...just do a google search....

    Just bought this. It's heavy as the man mentioned but does not give to my hips when I'm lying on my side. It's like sleeping on a pool raft.
    The Klymit Static V is far superior.

    • @geraldhenrickson7472
      @geraldhenrickson7472 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Comparing this to a Klymit is like comparing a Hummer to a Porsche. Apples and Oranges. Also. if over inflated...are not comfy. Mine has seen at least 170 nights in baja...and Baja has all manner of sharp vegetation. And is also insulated for those cold nights. Wonderful pad.

    Used one for many years, but modern self inflating 1/2 or 3/4 mats are a better option. I also found it was easy to slide off them in a nylon or MVP bag. Not great. Rather heavy too, but pretty robust. Not useless, but for a few dollars you can get better, lighter.
