Buss Machinery Co 8" jointer - oil retention grooves part 2 = Success

  • So I finally got around to trying the second round of oil grooves in the babbitt bearings for my 110+ yr old Buss Machinery Company 8" jointer. And although I went into it unsure if it was going to work as I had not done this before, and new things are always somewhat scary, it worked and was a happy surprise.
Not only did the oil not leak out this time, but after an initial heat up near the pulley, I think it wore itself in, and then the temps actually came back down....so I think/hope it is getting plenty of oil, as otherwise the friction would have heated things up vs letting it cool back down while running. Plus...with it not dripping and spraying tons of oil everywhere, that should mean it is usable again. So next I get the less challenging but still technical task of putting the new blades in and getting the head bolts all properly tightened again.
I am so glad the second round of oil grooves worked...I was worried I would have to just scrap the machine (and thus lose all the money/time put in it) if it was leaking as much oil as was coming out. But since that worked, all should hopefully be good.

Did you ever replace the missing felt oil wick in the bottom of the leaking bearing housing? It soaks oil up from the well in the bottom of the housing and wipes oil on the shaft, this keeps the bearing lubricated yet doesn't allow oil to leak out.
To quote Bear Claw: " Seen it right off"!

I did, I put he felt wick back in on both bearings before I put it all together and it is working fairly well so far. ie even used the jointer for a project and the oil did not leak out and the bearings did not get above 'touch' temps. The big key was the grooves to help route the oil back in vs having it all go to the outsides.

Do you ever actually work with wood

Not as much lately, no one wanted any boxes, carvings, back scratchers, etc that I was making. I will get back to wood projects again if someone buys a custom box or whatever on my etsy store or if I get motivated, but for now have been trying to get the tools that I bought refurbished. So is that comment more that you want to see more wood projects vs tool restoration? If so, what would be a project you want to see me work on and make?

I do plan to get back to wood projects, and there are a bunch of other videos of past projects on my channel. However if you would like to see something specific, make a suggestion and I may make it.
