I attended the Ireland-Canada match because I had never attended a live cricket match and living in NY this was a potential once in a lifetime opportunity to see a 20/20 World Cup match (a format I enjoy most). I enjoyed it but as a novice with limited understanding of the sport the issues you described were something I didn't recognize so I found the video to be quite educational and informative. Locally the biggest issue/complaint (the one leading to smaller than expected crowds) is the price of tickets being ridiculously expensive. I went to the particular match mentioned because it was the only affordable one on the secondary market (paid $39) and box office price would've been close to $70 (any of the other matches would have been far more expensive). 10:30 am on a weekday isn't optimal for drawing big crowds either. If you are looking for a silver lining to this story when the stadium is torn down the cricket ground will remain a permanent cricket ground for recreational leagues. Who knows, maybe years from now after it has been a cricket ground for years and all the kinks have been ironed out it can host an international tournament and this time get it right. I can only hope.

@@syeedchowdhury2501Couldn't agree more, basically took words out of my mouth. Watching Batsmen not hitting 6s again & again with scores not being overly inflated was refreshing. Watching Bowlers defend low scores with matches going for last Overs making heartbeat fluctuate till the end not knowing what could happen even in T20s was a good & much needed change. I never hated T20s but definitely didn't like what it became. Some fans probably just like to watch only 6s & huge scores. But I think some fans for some reasons also wanted Americans to be introduced to a major Cricket event with constant raining of 6s & 200+ average scores & that didn't happen upsetting many of those fans who are now saying this was a bad promotion of the game to the Americans. I think a good Bat vs Ball contest would always be a good promotion of the game to new audience.
One of the hardest thing for me as newer fan to the game is the topic of wicket quality and pitch \ field deterioration.. It's a topic that most veteran fans understand well enough. But this was a great overview.

@@syeedchowdhury2501I actually agree with you. Back in the day a required run rate of 8-9 an over was considered difficult because hitting the ball to the boundary not only required skill but the ability to read and react to the ball with proper execution and timing. But this IPL made a mockery of that where targets of 200-260 were getting chased down. The constant six hitting just killed all the tension in the match because runs were being scored with ease. What makes the sport fun is when every run needs to be fought hard for and the match could turn at any point. I know people complain about the New York pitch but the unpredictability is what makes this fun and it actually brings back balance between Bat and Ball. For the first time in a while it actually felt like a required run rate of 7 an over seemed hard. This world cup has been more thrilling than the IPL.
Well when they announced that ind-pak will happen in new york i was super surprised because i had seen some games in grad prix and it was really exciting but had never heard of cricket culture in new york at all (they are hard core baseball fans). There is a small local cricket culture starting to grow in Texas. I play every saturday and Wednesday evenings (some of my American and south American friends have started to pick tge game up). Don't know why they went for new york when dallas was there best bet
I had to look this up, but Morrisville isn’t just a small town between some universities, it’s smack in the middle of Raleigh-Durham, a metro area with 2.5 million people, and a few minutes from a large airport. It’s not NY, but it could have worked and it’s easier to get to than Namibia!
Every time i hear about the New York pitich I think of the song. If you make it in New York you make it any. In New York. Who knew they were talking about cricket batsmen
The reason LA wasn't chosen was because of the major time zone mismatch with South Asia. As shit as the pitch maybe, I thought south africa's match in New york today was more thrilling than Aus Vs Eng match in the Caribbean.
England was grumbling about the Dharamshala outfield during the 50-over World Cup, but had they played in New York, they would have taken to the streets!
Why are there so many people confusing a dangerous pitch with a batter unfriendly pitch despite it being spelt out in the video? A low scoring pitch like Guyana where stroke making is tough isn't the same as this NY pitch where it's truly dangerous for a batsman because an odd ball just climbs on a batsman off a good length.
Considering the fact that they wanted to promote cricket in USA by playing in LA or new york , i think ICC has actually harmed progress of cricket in USA with this pitch and the sluggish matches being played coupled with the fact that the matches are being played during day time which is the worst possible time to play t20 cricket
Do you think that all teams playing in New York should spend at least the first 7 overs playing defence and getting quick 1s or 2s and then really target the spinners as there is a lower "safety hazard" of playing spin, especially if they do so at the pitch of the ball?
I think they should boycott. Teams will bowl less spin. But spinners are tough to because of the inconsistency and stoppy nature of the wicket. But yes they're a lot more easy to score off on this wicket. But I don't think teams will use much spin from here on in. Kulderp and shamsi were dropped already.
One thing to add here is that they wanted to use the athletic surfaces in Van Cortland Park in the Bronx, same ones that New York University uses for athletics, and that was the plan for the first two years until some local residents complained to the city council that they wouldn't be able to use the park fully during the world cup, and also impuning the likelihood of good crowds there and thus convinced the New York City Council that it was unjustified. This was set up last minute because the ICC managed to trigger U.S. not in my backyard activists otherwise known as NIMBYs.
Hey Jarrod how did the pitch play in the India Bangladesh warmup? I didnt hear too much about people complaining about it so id love to hear your thoughts
Hey Jarrod, love your work. This highlights the tragedy of cricket administration and the neoliberal, capitalist approach being taken by the powers that be. I live in Berlin and as a side gig, coach cricket at a University. When I reached out to the German cricket board for funding to get nets built, the response was that the ICC will only fund playing surfaces and not practice surfaces. Bearing in mind that the two actual pitches in Berlin are constantly being used for practice by the clubs. There are simply no funds from the ICC for even a small net. Yet they throw millions at this Nassau ground and pitch, which quite likely might end up being abandoned or torn down at the end of this clown fiesta. All so that the desis can be milked for yet another overhyped India vs Pakistan game at 11 in the morning in NY.
Great analysis and absolutely scrumptious content as usual, Jarrod. Sorry but didn't understand one thing - what was the pressing need to have a third venue in USA, if two already existed in Florida and Dallas, such that they had to create a ground from scratch?
@@JarrodKimberYT Makes sense, I guess. But even then Nassau County is hardly part of New York City. It's like building a stadium in Thane and saying it's in Mumbai
@@redhash1998 They wanted a venue in the city (Eric Adams wanted it in Central Park, which wouldn't have been a good idea) and had a location in mind in the Bronx. Bronx residents were vehemently against this, and shut the idea down quite quickly. So they had to go with something on Long Island (which tbf isn't the worst, since it's relatively close to JFK). Overall the planning has been horrendous though.
Hi Jarrod, the ICC has owned up to this and mentioned that it is trying to make the surface better. What can they potentially do in such a short of time ? Even if they make the pitch, magically, any better, the outfield might still be unsafe. Your thoughts ?
My understanding is the pitch trays were made in Adelaide. The actual pitch (soil and grass) are from Florida. This is different to what you are saying. Am I wrong?
Time to let it go, Jarrod. The pitch in the India/Pakistan had some two paced movement, but it was a magnificent game and everyone had a tremendous time, except of course Pakistan at the end, but that was their fault for leaving too many runs on the board with Bumrah steaming in for the 19the over. The tournament is absolutely fascinating, a great spectacle, and those of us here in the US who love cricket are over the moon that the ICC has the enterprise to explore the game’s serious expansion here.
As much as its true that both teams face the same conditions, and that with so little knowledge of or understanding the importance of not just the pitch but the outfield etc, I see no excuses given how much money is pumped into Olympics, NFL, MLB stadiums and venues in the US that they couldn't get this right given the time and resources of the ICC and the USA. You can get poor playing conditions anywhere of course but if the goal was to endear the cricketing world to the USA as a host or the USA to become part of it and adopt it these issues are likely to set it back somewhat. It could have been made as true and as perfect as is possible but it seems building a large capacity venue superceded the actual surface the game is played on.
I'm truly scared of how many good players might end up getting injured on that monstrosity of a cricket pitch. Hope Ind vs Pak match doesn't become a spoilsport
I don't know why I am very excited see Indian batsmen go against those express pacers of Pakistan on these wickets. It would have been a perfect wicket if not for steep bounce. I actually like that seaming aspect of wicket.
So my friends who watched it said it was a poor deck as well. Just that Bangladesh didn't bowl enough pace or play well. And when India bowled Bangladesh had similar struggles. Though that still seems like the best wicket from there so far.
This world cup in the USA is nothing more than a short term cash grab. It seems to have reached almost no one in the US beyond the diaspora of expats, and tickets have been priced so that curious potential new fans aren't coming to the games. Your documentary proves more and more correct as time passes. Imagine if for the same investment we had put a world cup in Africa or the Phillipines, or Indonesia, or Brazil where for the same money we could have had a much more appealing tournament with a far larger long term impact in spreading the game.
How quickly does the ICC decide on unfit pitches? Not that I think they will, but it would be incredibly funny if this ground was deemed unfit before all of its games had been played!
Still unclear to my why the pitch performs like this. It's not like this is the first drop in pitch ever used. The turn around from the end of the AFL season to the start of the cricket season isn't years long. So whats going on here? Is it what's in the trays, what's underneath them, or how they were managed? The outfield is a different story though. That indeed seems to have been rushed. It looks like they are playing on a beach at times.
I had no idea that some people pronounced "Nassau" as anything other than "nass-sao" let alone that it wasn't even in the top 2 most common pronounciations
The world cup has been an absolute shitshow in general. 10 am games on working days, preseeded super-8s, shit pitches, empty stadiums, no TV rights to US channels, etc. I don't see this working out at all.
Well it's not true, the matches are going great as low scoring matches are always exciting to watch, as a cricket fan I personally love low scoring matches as there's always a competition between both the teams, high scoring matches always tend to go one way only, and willow tv has the tv rights in usa
@@aniketchaudhary6277 No one has fucking Willow TV. And no one will buy fucking Willow TV to watch cricket. And I love watching good bowling, but these pitches are just unfit for play. You can't have the ball hitting the knee and the head off the same length. Somebody is going to get injured soon on these goat-tracks. South Africa makes excellent bowling wickets, very difficult to bat on, but without injury risk. On wickets like these, every cunt who can chuck at 120kmph can get wickets, just look at the NED vs SA game.

If you're familiar with the insanity of American building requirements you'll understand that they have an absolutely absurd amount of car parks because if you build anything you are obliged to build enough parking to cater for the max capacity of the thing. Consequently roughly 99% of American city space is taken up by parking
I always had a feeling this tournament might go badly. Saw pictures of the stadium and the ground a few months back, it looked like a disaster zone. There are district tournaments behind my house in gurgaon which take months to organise and the wickets are far better than this NY shit sled. I'm afraid that the ICC's lust to capitalise on summer vacation viewership might put international players lives in jeopardy
I loved all the matches on the Nassau County Pitch. Great to watch Batsmen not being able to hit 6s after 6s for a change & Bowling side managing to take lots of Wickets & successfully defending low scores, it's like Bowlers mattered this time a lot. I'd watch T20s on such a Pitch any day over the dead ones which gives 200+ consistent team scores. Watching Balls Swing & Turn was really great fun. People can keep hating the Nassau Pitch, I personally hated USA being such a focus for ICC over other countries in that region but now I'm glad they had matches in Nassau.
Pakistan is still gonna f this up on this pitch!! Lol its designed for pakistani bowlers to go nuts!!! Still we will lose, after the usa loss this is the pink Himalayan salt to rub on our stab wounds. Love the game game hate the beneficiaries

It's white Americans , native Americans .. etc who have lived with African Americans in a particular country (usa) much much longer than asian community. A piece of paper may say all are Americans but reality is often and it takes years and years for a community to be integrated. Basically when they see usa playing cricket in America by Americans all they see is similar to some hindu community celebrating Diwali or Muslims celebrating ramzan. Yes its happening in America done by Americans (on paper) but how many white, native, African American would make it a point to go and celebrate with this communities every time they gather. Not many not enough to make a change . White, black and native Americans are most likely to see Aaron jones 20 not out and most likely to get inspired then compared to an asian ethnic guy scoring 100. Expected better from you, Jarrod. Rather than focusing on the lack of technique and skill in our modern batters we're debatting this. Each type a bowl does something, every hell break loose. 😳
No, this pitch would be a dangerous one in test and ODIs too. The variable bounce, especially when a ball rises from good length is dangerous to a batsman's well-being. That's what's being talked about here.
@@arkamukhopadhyay9111 I've been watching cricket for longer than your age, which shows because how did you completely fail to comprehend the video? This pitch is in the category of a Sabina Park, but I don't think you know that.
@@AnkushBhattacharya that's a little unlikely, because you look about half my age, at the most. No, this is nowhere in the league of Sabina Park. It's a wicket with somewhat variable bounce, that's all. T20 has destroyed every last ounce of technique and so today's paper tigers can't handle it.
@@arkamukhopadhyay9111 Don't go by my pfp, it's as old as this account (i.e. 15+ years). More importantly, I said "in category of" not "exactly as dangerous as" Sabina Park. Also remember, this video was made before the India Pak match. In SL vs SA and Ind vs Ire matches, there were balls climbing off the good length area while some balls didn't even rise knee high from the same length. That's what this video is talking about. The Ind vs Pak wicket was much more docile compared to what this pitch was earlier.
The balls are almost as hard as a rock. They're harder than a baseball, and he got hit with 90mph speed from something harder than a hardball at his collar bone area. That's one of the weaker bones.
The two are extremely similar in size, weight and hardness. Baseballs travel just as fast and slightly faster for some of the absolute hardest throwers. The ball did not hit his collarbone, did you watch the video? It hit his shoulder. Regardless, baseball players very often get hit with balls just as hard and fast in equally or more vulnerable places (ex hands with less padding than cricket players) and don’t miss games. This is so soft, and baseball players aren’t exactly notorious for being tough
@NYSports14 it's harder, and I saw it hit the collar and move on to the shoulder, and yes, baseball players do miss games for getting hit in the shoulder if it breaks something. Getting hit in Baseball or Cricket is no joke. Also, the baseball has usually gone further before it hits someone than a cricket ball. This means that less velocity from the throw has been lost. Also, your certainly tough, jackass, for claiming that they're babies for leaving after getting hit by a ball that bounced in a direction no one expected it to. I might have left because I wouldn't be sure of my eyes at that point and would be afraid that one might accidentally hit me in my neck because I hadn't anticipated, nor the bowler intended, that bounce and thus I hadn't defended against it. Even if he wasn't hurt, it's in his prerogative to leave the field at any time if he feels it's unsafe. In fact, the Umpire maybe should have called the match after seeing the batter, and the bowler both reacted like they hadn't expected the exact ricochet that had hit the batter.
If pitch favours batters nobody says anything 200 runs was scored by every team in ipl now if they are favouring bowlers you all are crying pitch should favour both batters and bowlers good players can score runs here too
Heaps of people said things when the pitch favoured the batters actually. So not sure how you missed that. This sing about a pitch helping bowlers (Guyana and Barbados does that, no complaints fr this video one that). Its about an unsafe surface for professional cricketers. Which I made very clear.

Trust me, no one really understands it well enough. :)

The reason LA wasn't chosen was because of the major time zone mismatch with South Asia. As shit as the pitch maybe, I thought south africa's match in New york today was more thrilling than Aus Vs Eng match in the Caribbean.

"ICC has convinced the americans that the game is better off if the ball doesn't bounce." Good dig at baseball 😂
Considering the fact that they wanted to promote cricket in USA by playing in LA or new york , i think ICC has actually harmed progress of cricket in USA with this pitch and the sluggish matches being played coupled with the fact that the matches are being played during day time which is the worst possible time to play t20 cricket
this is such an excellent video!! thank you jarrod
You have great knowledge ❤️
@JarrodKimberYT You have given Hollywood script idea for another monster movie!

They just wanted one big city. They didn't need a third venue. They just wanted new York because Los Angeles was the wrong time zone
I have been to Morrisville. Lovely ground. Scheduled to be upgraded to host ICC events, even though they held 2020/21 T20 WC Americas Qualifiers!
Are you in any way related to Billy Kimber, the British gangster?
Hi Jarrod, the ICC has owned up to this and mentioned that it is trying to make the surface better. What can they potentially do in such a short of time ? Even if they make the pitch, magically, any better, the outfield might still be unsafe. Your thoughts ?
They've kind of owned up to it. But I honestly can't imagine there is much they can
My understanding is the pitch trays were made in Adelaide. The actual pitch (soil and grass) are from Florida. This is different to what you are saying. Am I wrong?

Bumrah, Rauf, Aamir- nightmares on this pitch
Time to let it go, Jarrod. The pitch in the India/Pakistan had some two paced movement, but it was a magnificent game and everyone had a tremendous time, except of course Pakistan at the end, but that was their fault for leaving too many runs on the board with Bumrah steaming in for the 19the over. The tournament is absolutely fascinating, a great spectacle, and those of us here in the US who love cricket are over the moon that the ICC has the enterprise to explore the game’s serious expansion here.
I like this pitch! Bowlers are getting respect
U have so much knowledge on this topic u must be associated with England team management. U know much more than a regular cricket TH-camr

Why flat tracks like highways considered good pitch??
The Ind vs Ban warmup game seemed to be on a better wicket why not use that instead of whatever they are using now?
So my friends who watched it said it was a poor deck as well. Just that Bangladesh didn't bowl enough pace or play well. And when India bowled Bangladesh had similar struggles. Though that still seems like the best wicket from there so far.
Crappy pitch imported from Adelaide AUS.
They certainly won't. But it would be funny
Add to the fact, that NY has some unlevelled, fairly corrugated and at places devoid of grass outfield.

American fans probably enjoy a dangerous pitch, I mean this is the the country that has a motorsport that is all about high speed crashes.
Yeah I agree. That said I wonder if we've ever had a wicket rushed like this that also grew in three different places before.

So when you say "if african Americans got into cricket " lol and how would you achieve that . That's is what I was talking about. They need to be motivated in a way that their people are doing well in that sport and who are their people beyond a paper of citizenship?

Essentially, these days if you can't score 250 in 20 overs, it's a dangerous pitch.
No, this pitch would be a dangerous one in test and ODIs too. The variable bounce, especially when a ball rises from good length is dangerous to a batsman's well-being. That's what's being talked about here.
@@AnkushBhattacharya let me guess, you were born after 2000?

In SL vs SA and Ind vs Ire matches, there were balls climbing off the good length area while some balls didn't even rise knee high from the same length. That's what this video is talking about. The Ind vs Pak wicket was much more docile compared to what this pitch was earlier.

He had to retire from the match because he got grazed by a ball!?! Am I missing something or are these guys bigger babies than soccer players?
