    More you work the trailer the more money you will make. Did the heavy hual for about 14 yrs . Open deck for almost 30yr now. As far as trucks start with a cheap truck and dont think getting a custom sleeper truck to you learn the freight you want to hual. Remember only 7 days in a week want to get payed for 7 and work 3 to 4 days. Keep the miles low and keep the revenue high. Of you can avg 500 dollars a day if the truck moves or not. Thats 182500 a yr this to the truck not to the company.

    Quit the job hopping as well. On a weekly basis at fuel islands I have people asking how it is for the company I drive for and want to get on. They’ve been with more carriers than they have been with women. It’s all the same when you jump from this giant carrier to that one. My best advice as you said is to find a company that can get you your CDL and choose one that has freight and/or a terminal or drop yard close to where you live. Other than that stay there the whole year or 15 months or however long it is and just deal with it. Get experience. And once you’ve committed to that contract and completed it then move on if you want. I see a lot of drivers jumping from Schneider to Crete to JB Hunt to Prime to Roehl to Schneider again and they are just never satisfied. Just quit trucking at that point.

    Back when i worked as a case manager, i had to drive all over my city, and even different counties and loved (practically ran) getting out the office so i can get in my car and go. This beats a desk job any day imo

    Excellent info. If you can afford to buy a 15-25k truck cash definitely have that engine, drive line, suspension and electrical components put underload to gauge what needs attention. Stay local (300 mile radius) so if any issues come about you can afford to get it to your "trusted" shop for repairs. And that info on lower overhead and not going in debt?...💯💯💯💯! Thanks bro.

      I'm curious, is this what you did? Not trying to be a dick but spending $20k on a truck seems like a great trcipe for downtime and a bottomless pit of repairs. Not a perfect analogy but would you buy a $50k rental property?

      @@MidwayGuy no its not what I did. But I'm aware of some that did. And...if you're mechanically inclined and know what to look for you'll have an excellent eye and ear for a money pit. I'll rather buy a 20k non emissions truck and put 10k in it ANY DAY than to drop 60k on a pretty, shiny EPA business killer. If it doesn't have a warranty at 60k walk TF away.

    I drive for System Transport and was able to get into their heavy haul training off the bat, similar to TMC but smaller, they run a great show and have taken damn good care of me here, I love i.

      @@garypierce7380 we only havea handful of loads that are truly "Oversize" but are fairly light, with the division im in, we pull 60 Ft rebar among other building supplies and are grossing put between 102,400 and 105,000 max

    I’m asked this same thing from time to time. Things are very different from when I started driving. I learned to drive from family. I bought a cheap piece of crap truck and went out into the world hauling freight. I lied my ass off about what I knew how to do like flat bedding and hauling equipment and figured it out along the way. I never drove a company truck so I can’t comment on the pros and cons of it, but I do think that if I was just starting out now,,, I’d go to college and be anything but a truck driver.

    Ive been a Design Engineer since 2007. (17 years). Back in 2004 or 2005 I had a huge interest in becoming a truck driver. Im glad I didn't do it then, as I have created a very good life, and I don't think I would have met my wonderful wife if I had just been on the road all this time. But here I am, always watching trucking videos. Always dreaming about hitting the road. Ive had a great career in engineering, but I always come back to truck driving. Something about those Big Shiny Peterbilts that just drives me crazy. Im tired of sitting behind a computer all the dang time. I have nothing to complain about AT ALL. Im very blessed. I just need some adventure. I make $98k, I am not a degreed engineer, just worked my way into it from being a drafter/designer. So, I know Id be taking a hit, but I am not sure if I will ever forgive myself if I don't do trucking at least for a couple years, as a break. I can always fall back into Mechanical Engineering.

    Very interesting point of view. All good points to look at. I started out at System, and moved to a small company. I've found my forever home and once my house is paid off I plan on adventuring on buying my own truck.

    Respect for you oversize haulers out there I couldn’t deal with that sorta headache day in day out, I’ll stick to bumping docks but I do have to say it’s kinda ridiculous to even get into heavy haul unless you know someone or have family doing it good luck getting on at a heavy haul company

    As far as CDL school, a local college program is by far the best option. It’s cheaper, good quality, and accredited.Grants can also be an option.

      Yeah, I was retrained for free using the Workforce Investment Act because the oilfield was hot in 2013 and they needed drivers. P.S. Mrs. Butterworth is in the lead since they're going to retire Aunt Jemima.

      Yessir just got mine from a community college. Got a certificate apparently counts for 6 months experience, class was only $1100. Only somewhat down side is it was an 8 week class, but I was grateful for the extra time to learn

      @@wanghaf_Gl0yper Here they cram it into 4 weeks, 10 hour days. Gonna be worth it though, the one PAM tried to convince me to go to was 2 weeks long. First whole week as just on getting your CLP, so that's a week of training behind the wheel. This class requires you to have your CLP to even sign up, so it's all focused on actual training.

    Make sure your cdl school gives you manual training also. My school was auto only so now I have a restriction on my cdl that I'll have to retest to get cleared.

      I mean realistically does that really matter these days? Unless you work for Old dominion or a small company that might have some manuals. These days 90+% of companies are going automatic

    Before i get a truck, that's my debate too is newer vs older. It seems older the truck, more capital you'll need for repairs. With starting off, going older might seem like a disaster if out the gate something big goes out.

    I completed my bachelor's degree while living in my car, I spent the better part of 5 years traveling around Latin America, and I became fluent in Spanish at 25 years of age. I am currently enrolled in an alternative teaching program to teach Spanish, but as I will be waiting a year to get into the classroom, I've decided to get my CDL. A company will be paying for my training and I will be creating videos during the process and sharing as much as I can for everyone else out there interested in driving!     Would you still recommend going the owner operator route? I'm sure you've heard this WAYYY too much but the idea that automated trucks are supposed to be taking over..."whenever" Is the thing that makes me the most nervous about jumping into this profession.

    Why not sign a contract and be locked in with one company? You NEED the experience. After the contract isup- you know the ropes and hopefully a good record driving too!

    Would you purchase a day cab or a sleeper? Should an owner-operator be flexible to go where the money is? ie: tanker for six months and then OTR if the job is higher pay?

    5:10 yo dude, I had a conestoga (curtain side) flatbed pull up behind me at a reciever and then pull the brakes and then propped his chin on his hand on the steering wheel and stare at me and watch me work to yank the tarp off by myself. Then when I was done and had my tarps rolled up he got out told me i needed to hurry up because i was in his way. When i politely told him i was waiting on fork lift, he proceeded to get mad and yell at me about how slow i was. Its hard not to be sour abput that the rest of your day.

    You can go to a truck school for free if you made less than 15k the previous year through a job center, for example Join in Reno, NV. Just call any truck school and they will give you the details.

    How long should I run with a starter company before you recommend getting my own truck and leasing onto someone? I've been in another business for myself for over 30 years so I understand being a business owner. I agree with everything you said and how to run it! I'm interested in Flatbed with a path to heavy haul. My goals are to make as much money as possible in trucking and I like the physical aspect of open deck for sure! I'm thinking a solid year running for someone else should be enough as long as I put in the miles. I could be wrong though. I'm 49 by the way. Thanks!

      You could just start your own Authority and run for yourself off the load boards, at the end of the day that is where the money is.

      I guess it’s possible that some companies have decent lease programs but everything I’ve heard about them is to avoid them at all costs. Just save and get it yourself

      Im not yet a trucker but been taking steps towards getting my CDL and been looking into going O/O; From what ive gathered, you want 2-3years of CDL driving experience. That way, you get plenty of training/experience & build trucking-relationships (both with mechanics/shops and with shippers/receivers). Also, having 2-3years of experience in the field will lower your insurance-rates compared to being a rookie-driver. And, should you need to get financing on a rig, most places (whether the financing is thru a dealership or bank) will be looking more at how long you've had your CDL and not so much at your credit.

    BUY A CASH TRUCK
    Hi. I was wondering about the age of the trucks you are suggesting. 2000-2004 truck. If I become an owner-operator working for a company, will the company reject me for having a truck that is way too old? I've heard they will refuse you if yours is 10 years old or older. Thanks for your help. I'd definitely not lease to purchase or be crazy enough to buy anything new. I don't want a truck owning me.
    All these suggestions are great. I especially liked the part about having a mentor and learning how to maintain your truck. 👍

    So pay thousands of dollars up front for trucking school and then struggle to find a job, instead of get paid to get your CDL and have a guaranteed job for a year? And if it doesn't work out quit before a year is up and owe less than what most schools charge?
    I fail to understand why guys think paid school is better

    I passed CDL last week. Going to Prime, flatbed, for the training. After a year or so as company driver the plan is to go to a TMC, Melton, Lonestar(?), to make my way to heavy haul. After 2 or 3 years I’ll follow your advice and buy my first truck/trailer cash and get my authority. I’ll be following your journey closely. Thanks for the ongoing advice. Hope to meet you in person some day. BTW, this is a late in life (58) career change after 30 years “driving a desk.” Luckily I’m already very comfortable mechanically.

      You won't leave prime inc. Nor should you they are the best. If u train you can make 100k easy

      Stay clear of Melton my friend, if you do leave Prime, TMC, or Maverick. Most Heavy Haul companies are going to want at least 3 to 5 years of solid accident free experience on the road before they will even look at your application. P.S. TMC hires recent grads and new drivers, they will also train you.

      Let me clarify, I think Melton is a great starter company. They will train you right in securement and flatbed, but their maintenance is hit or miss depending on the terminal. I was once told to schedule my own truck repair on my own home time in Greensboro, NC while I was sitting at their Tulsa terminal shop for 4 days. They do only PM maintenance no actual repair work. Because they didn't want to send the truck to the local dealer or issue me a new one. So they thought it better to let me drive a truck with a fuel and coolant leak during the summer for another 21 days before my next home time. They also tend to hold off on looking for your next load until your empty confirmation. The end result I frequently sat up to 50 hours waiting for a load. Just not worth it. A lot of drivers go to Melton get 3-6 months then jump ship to P and S, Hornady or other companies. Trucks were nice, equipment was good, frequent preload and drop and hook, pay was good as an experienced driver, dispatchers sucked and just did not care. Choose at your own risk.

    You haul that heavy haul stuff,and over size loads. I'll take a reefer and haul asparagus berries cherries high dollar freight and make 100,000 more dollars a year and dont have to be out in the weather in the winter. I've drove 45 yrs I know where the money is.

      I hear ya, reefer is good money. I ran reefer for the first 5 1/2 years, company of course, personally I just prefer open deck. Ideally later in my career for those winter months, a reefer would be my top choice probably.

    as always, very informative... BUT, lol, yes there's a but or more like something that made me raise an eyebrow to. :) and that is the pay in cash for a truck, because talking to an accountant they would suggest differently as it can be used to write off some of the money made so more stays with the company. BUT, yup another but, haha. things could have changed and that might no longer be the way.

      It’s ideal to have right offs but even if you pay cash you can still write the truck off for three years, so if one of the years you have an increase in maintenance, You could delay the truck right off to the following year and write a bigger percentage off I believe. Personally I just like to have low monthly obligations in case things come up, especially those first couple of years

    How hard is it to get out of trucking? Right now I wouldnt mind just being alone, but I am 21 and dont know what I wanna do for the rest of my life. I thought that as trucking paid alot that if I do want to do something then trucking would be good for now if or when I wanna go back to college.

      Avoid debt. Start driving and stack cash to pay college in full. You’ll always have that CDL and can even work nights or weekends and breaks while you attend. Not to mention if you can’t find the job you love or the opportunity you want, you don’t have to settle anywhere. Just hop in that truck and wait until the college degree is able to get you the opportunity to move on from trucking.

    so im actually thinking really hard about doing trucking. im active duty army and there is a program called troops into transport. 180 hours all endorsements hazmat recruiters meet you. its 9500 bucks but it comes out my gi bill. so free to me. now i drove in iraq/afghanistan up to 20 ton vics, going for days with nothing but caffeine and nicotine. lol i figure id do my 2 yeard otr then apply to higher paying gigs, im in the south east AL. i dunno maybe a hazmat job or union or owner op. just thoughts on what you think. ill be 39 when i get out of 14 years active duty army

      Personally I think it’s a good idea but @heavyhaulnation is a vet and out here crushing it, he probably has better advice for you since you guys are both military
      My two cents is work for an entry level company, there are some that higher former military, then figure out the direction you want to go before buying a truck 👍🏻

    I have a question for you.......It looks like you hired on to that Idaho company because you love driving in the Rocky Mountains;....are you able to do that with Landstar? Will you be driving the mountains or are you pretty much done with that?

      The only reason I hired on over there was because I wanted to run spot market, they did not have any direct customers. I am still traversing the north west, I’m coming back from there right now 😂

      Depends on the company, lots of companies have trailers you can rent, use, or buy. The truck is certainly the most important.

    There's no good plan in the trucking industry...it's absolute garbage from top to bottom whether you own your own or drive for someone. It's full of liars and thieves and law enforcement treats you like a criminal. Oh did I mention you get disrespected and treated like 2nd class citizens by just about everyone. Young people take heed to my advice and run away as fast as you can. Oh and I forgot to mention how it takes a toll on your health mentality and physically. I could go on all day about all the bad that comes with it with very minimal upside.

    I was able to get a grant through the state and got my CDLs with 160 driving academy. They have locations nation wide. The grant paid for everything up to 5000. The school alone is 4500$ in West Virginia but it is a bit more expensive in other locations. Just check them out. They will also connect you with a job after. Its an independent school. Hope this helps someone

    Got my cdl through a third party state certified and approved company. If you know the truck and don’t wanna waste time with a trucking school and taking this avenue is great way for truck mechanics to get a cdl and at the end of the day if you wanna stop turning wrenches for a while and turn truck driver you can do it. Taking this avenue costed me 450.00 for the course, 100.00 for driver physical, then paying for the new copy of the license which was 80.00 so for a little more than 600.00 bucks I got a class a cdl and I’m making plenty money with it right now. I’m a road tech and back-up driver. Loving it.

      Dr. Ken Berry on TH-cam has great videos on the Keto diet and Intermittent fasting. I make hard boiled eggs for the truck and I'm out 4 and a half days typically. I also avoid sodas, sugar, and empty carbs like chips and cookies.

    I usually take to heart what this guy has to say he knows the industry been in it a long time however I disagree with the going to school on your dime philosophy because most people are not going in to this career with that kind of capital available to do that on top of that if you do find a company to take you with no experience your pay is going to be absolute crap do your research there are companies that will train you for nothing and you get good if not great pay in return find the right company you might never leave unless you have ambitions of being an owner operator I can speak from my personal experience on this got trained by first company 4 years ago and I’m still here......
