    Those plastic side covers probably add a lot of protection for clumsy people like me who fall down in rocks. Yes, take the foam out.

    I replaced those covers with ones from Polisport for the 450R. Fit on perfectly with no mods needed

    I just hit 1200 miles on my L and I just now feel she's broken in lol. I see no shaving etc in the oil bike runs much smoother aswell these engines are so tight when new.

      I can’t wait to get more hours in next year. Barely got to do much this year. That’s ok though. Going to have this one for a long time!

    Duplicated the brake switch guard, great idea! Shrink wrap is fine, but you missed the opportunity for some home made bling! Mine got red enamel paint.

      That’s a good idea! I might change that someday. My brother in law did the same thing on his as well

    i saw many peoples have trouble with the Drainplug ? they are super tight and threads are stripped of when they open it.....
    the torque specs in the manual seems to be a way to high.....
    how do you tighten the drain plug ? simple finger tight and then a little snug with the hex key and thats it ?

    • @DadsDomain
      @DadsDomain  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just changed the oil after my recent ride which was the first time after this video and the plug was way too tight! I was not comfortable at all with that so this time I tightened it by feel vs a torque wrench. I feel much better about it now for next time

      @@DadsDomain I tightened mine until it bottomed out, then another 1/8 - 1/4 turn. Did the first oil change at 600 miles and it felt very tight trying to remove it.

    You could just place magnets on button of your drain container just move it around then dump oil
    Yes throw those covers away and replace your silencer it’s like 15lbs!!!!

    I always feel bad when I hear yankee folk talking about riding seasons and having to put the bike up for the winter. We may only have 1.5 seasons in Houston but at least its always riding season...except the few weeks of the year where everything is underwater... love the video

    • @DadsDomain

    Take the foam off the cover and put the cover back on. Who cares about sound deadening when your riding an awesome machine like that. Your over thinking this.

    • @DadsDomain
      @DadsDomain  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      One of many times I have been accused of overthinking something. But I do like the idea of getting rid of the foam if you want to keep the covers

    change the rear brake switch to a pressure switch that replaces the banjo, im on a season with that upgrade with no issues

    How much weight do you think you saved taking those plastic covers off? A pound each? Part of me wants to keep them on and part of me wants to remove them.Also, nothing wrong with a cheap oil change at 100 miles. I'd do it at 300 and 600 miles, too, then as recommended. The filter is $3 and if using the recommended Honda oil at $7/qt, you are well under $30 for two extra oil changes before hitting 600.

    • @DadsDomain
      @DadsDomain  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I went out tonight and weighed them and in total together they only weighed 13.5oz Now when I pulled them off the foam was wet and I know they weighed a lot more then. I do like the idea of changing oil in another 300 and then move on to normal intervals too

  • @lizbarber3473
    @lizbarber3473 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Maybe a silly thought , but I wonder if taking off the covers may aid engine cooling ?

    • @MrEtnorb
      @MrEtnorb 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good point. Those insulated covers surely hold heat in the engine, which must be bad for engine wear

    • @DadsDomain
      @DadsDomain  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would have assumed they did. Foam is used for insulation right? Thats whats behind those covers

  • @danhambrick6331

    Surprised you didn't stay with the factory Honda GN4 oil.....

    • @DadsDomain
      @DadsDomain  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s good oil but I order Amsoil twice a year with others and the preferred member discount. I prefer their signature series in my cars. They run quieter. Not a placebo effect they actually are quieter with it. So I order bike oil while I am at it for all our stuff.

  • @sullivandesignccs

    I torqued mine to 13lb after first oil change 2019 CRF450L) - and started the motor to warm it... then didn’t let it cool long enough and stripped the head of the drain bolt (using proper tool etc) ..... 😑

  • @Boonus18

    Aluminum is not magnetic.

    • @DadsDomain
      @DadsDomain  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good point. I think a lot of connecting points inside the engines such as the gears and valves are what created shavings a magnet could grab

    • @Boonus18
      @Boonus18 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, definitely reassuring that there was nothing on the magnet. I really liked this video, wished I would have tried the same thing. I did the break-in oil change on mine at 250km and did notice quite a few sparkles in the oil. My filter also looked very similar to yours.
      I Did the second oil change at 1000km and the oils was clear, no sparkles at all.

  • @Mostviews111

    Have you noticed any little tick? Mine has 800 miles on it and already hear a little tick.

    • @DadsDomain
      @DadsDomain  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The valve trains on these engines are incredibly loud, its the nature of the beast. For peace of mind you could check your valves early.

      @@DadsDomainboth exhaust and intake are still in spec. I also changed the cam chain tensioner to a manual one from Tokyo mods. That seemed to help for a little bit but its still noisy.

      @@DadsDomain I just bought a 2023 Honda 450rl and the engine sounds like a box of marbles bouncing around sounds like it could come unglued at any minute it’s a little unnerving. Changed the oil at 105 miles to Honda Gn 10-40 to see if it would quiet down some but sounds about the same. Was wondering do you have any vibrations in handlebars and foot pegs mine has a decent amount of vibrations. I loosened engine mount bolts and retorqued them but didn’t really help.

  • @sacool3588
    @sacool3588 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    How is the AmsOil treating you? I have a 450L too, but I'm still using GN4 10w40. Do you recommend switching to the AmsOil dirt bike oil?

    • @DadsDomain
      @DadsDomain  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you don’t change your oil often or run it hard yes I recommend AMSOIL. What I really recommend though is switching your cars to their signature series oil and signing up for a preferred member account. I swear my cars run quieter on their best oil. And since I already have the account I just order everything from them. Grease, bike oil, two stroke oil....Etc. oh and I let other family members order through me so we kinda share the membership cost. If you have a truck look into their severe gear oil for your Axle diffs. It’s good stuff

      No, no it’s not but thanks. Honda oil is good though

    • @sarahdell4042
      @sarahdell4042 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Honda gn4 is unremarkable. Amsoil is actually good oil, just not a fan of their MLM cult business model. But any oil in the proper spec, and changed often enough will be fine. You’re not going to get any noticeable life from a motor regardless of brands.
