I don't think James Brown gets enough credit for what he did for music. Listen to some of his music and then listen to someone else's music playing the same song. You can tell the difference between the two, because you don't hear that hard beat, which is what he calls the one.
I guess ultimately it's the first downbeat in the rhythmic phrase, but it's more than just an idea for counting: It's the rhythmic anchor for the whole band to make sure they're playing together and repeating the groove, emphasizing the right beats. That ONE's gotta be rock solid if you want to be a good live band that makes people dance.
I still don't think the interviewer quiiiite understood lol - the ONE is the 1 in 1-2-3-4 and it appears like he thinks its just "Ugh"-type emphasis hahaha
