It's the best Alien or Predator game I've ever played. I remember getting to play it online with basically the last people who were trying to do the same thing and making just enough to have a lobby
I love games where you play as animals. Ancestors is so good even though I did not do well for the first few ‘lives’ but the trial and error aspect and being so weak nearly all the way through is what keeps it fun. Your apes are constantly learning and yet there are simple things you can miss. Can imagine why it got hate when it came out as it is quite experimental, would love to see a sequel or something similar!
OMG I totally forgot about that AvP game. I had it for PC and I remember getting my dad to buy it for me because we’re both huge fans of the alien and predator franchise. The fact that it had 3 separate single player campaigns where you could play as either creature and a human was awesome. They did a very good job on it too. It had intense firefights in the human campaign, and the predator and alien campaigns really made you feel like the creatures. They didn’t pull any punches and i remember enjoying that game fondly. Thank you for the nostalgia trip.
My dad bought it for me too. I remember embarrassing the shit out of him at the register, because I proudly proclaimed to the cashier that he was buying this, an M rated game, for me, a like 6-7 year old child lmao.
I have it on Steam, and need to revisit it again. I overlooked it when it came out because it got somewhat panned as a mediocre title, but this was back when CoD, Battlefield, and Halo were king. It seemed like almost literally any other FPS that tried something different from the status quo got mediocre reviews.
Weird how all the Predator and Aliens games are critically hated.... despite the Ps1 game's contributions to game design, and Isolation and AvP both being great.
Aliens vs Predator 2 (2001) and its expansion pack did maybe an even better job. Love that game. The expansion pack had you play as a Alien / Predator hybrid.
Okami was my first purchase on Switch in 2019 that I only actually played and finished this year. It's a great game. If you like games where you clear some corrupted areas by fighting enemies, like in Kena The Bridge of Spirits and Hob, you might like this game too.

Eh. I really wanted to like it, but there were too many small things that added together made me really not like the game. The two biggest issues are the extreme simplicity of the marine life’s AI plus the humans being too over the top in how cartoonish and satirical…those two combined just kinda really killer the immersion factor of being a shark that I was so looking for. Jaws Unleashed was much better.
Wow, I can't believe Goat Simulator isn't on this list. I was expecting it to be number one. Playing as a goat in a human world where you just wreck everything. Well, it would be my number one. Followed by Stray then Maneater. I also love Destroy All Humans, but I haven't played it much.
I know ancestors was a very negatively reviewed game when released but lately I've been having a fun time playing it which is why I think more games should explore the concept of evolution like how ancestors did it

Far Cry Primal had a couple of side missions where you play as a wooly mammoth. A few interesting levels at least. I didn't care for a lot about that game but those were an enjoyable break.
Ancestors: humankind odyssey was dope. people hate the game for not telling players how to progress which actually the core mechanic of the game. discovery and exploration. hope they will still be doing the sequel
I was sad to hear it wasn't received well. That game was top notch. I love how it still helps players and gives them tips, but I won't hold your hand ever. Good game.

I really like Spore and the Eternal Cylinder. Not sure if they count. Also, Evolve. The game wasn't great but had bog potential. Moving around as a kaiju was fun.
You nailed number one. I've been playing this game since it came out on every system it's been on. The game is beautiful and there is always some new stuff to discover even after you've played the game a few times.

I just bought ancestors the humankind odyssey on the Xbox black friday sale. I remember watching RadBrad play through it a few years ago. Really cool idea of a game even if the execution wasn't the best. Hopefully it gets a sequel.

i finished the game, its certainly fun, just one main criticism (i have more but this is the biggest) is that its not very replayable, once you finish it or get close to finishing it once its extremely boring the next time around, cos you basically do the exact same things
Holy crap. I'm actually playing Okami right now. Always surprising to hear about since you hardly hear about it. It's really fun and absolutely gorgeous.

I'm glad Tokyo Jungle made the list. My buddies and I discovered that game years ago and we were obsessed with it for a while, but I've never heard anyone else talks about it.
Tokyo Jungle is soooo good. Some friends and I got addicted to it for a while back in the day and I'd love to see a spiritual successor or remake some day because I think it could probably find more of an audience on PS5/xbsx than it did on PS3 since PS3 was still not quite as strong as the 360 when it came out so it kinda went under the radar as far as anyone I've met at least.

Anyone else remember Mr. Mosquito? I’ll never forget my dad letting my cousins and I get it at Family Video in Muskegon, Michigan, in the early 2000’s and we all (my dad included) got into trouble because we were playing the chick-in-the-bathtub mission when my mom came downstairs. 😂 Better days.
I feel like Stray, Evil West and the latest Need For Speed Unbound are good examples that the industry is slowly correcting itself. The studios are starting to realize that games are about having fun first and foremost. We were stuck in a rut of games with gigantic open worlds with way too many things on the mini map and an overabundance of things to do. Assassin's Creed Valhalla seems like the epitome of that. While I really like Origins, it didn't feel like an Assassin's Creed game. It was a great game but it does kind of embody the issue of an overload of information. The subsequent games in the series got progressively worse about it. Valhalla would have been an amazing game if there was more emphasis on stealth and if they kept it a bit more simple. The recent God of War reboots really nailed this for me. Just an on the rails game with awesome mechanics, story and the perfect length. As an adult with a bunch of other things going on in my life, it's nice to have a more straightforward experience. If I can't play for a week that's no problem in God of War. If I do the same in Assassin's Creed, I get confused about what my objective even was. Hopefully the industry starts reeling that stuff back. Some games should have a ton of content and giant open world. But not every game needs this. Sometimes a smaller, tight knit narrative and on the rails experience is just better.
I feel like High on Life is another example of this, the developers had a bunch of fun making the game and really it enhanced the experience soooo much more.

Great list! Kept waiting for Unravel to pop up, but there are tons of games like this and you can only choose so many, after all. That said, definitely play Unravel if you like solving environmental puzzles with slick platforming. Plus, the game is a gorgeous work of art. Cheers!
Oh dear god, I had shivers when Gameranx mentioned the Destroy All Humans games because those were my childhood games... Ah the memory of the chunky Ps2s, and the gameplay of turning "bovines" into clouds of green dust. You gotta love the originals.
An incredibly unique and neatly selected list, thanks Falcon. I would add Darksiders franchise to it which player is playing as one of the horsemen of apocalypse in a world full of humans/angels/demons.
2 games I think are worth mentioning as well, though from my childhood PS2-era (both 2003) -Dogs Life (Frontier Development) -Whiplash (Eidos/Crystal Dynamics) Both games actually do handle serious topics, albeit in a sometimes goofy, original way

I would have added Sim Ant for PC/Mac and SNES. Taking over the yard and then eventually the human house was a fantastic game growing up. I know Empire of the Undergrowth is getting there, but there’s no survival mode with yard/house takeover yet.

I played the sequel to Okami; Okamiden, on the Nintendo DS. The celestial brush mechanic used the touchscreen of the device and it felt very natural to use.
2:53 Ive never heard of this game, but at one point (some 15 years ago) I had a pet tarantula called Rosae (she was a chilean rose, hence the name) and a scorpion (who was a little d*ck) called Jim. I miss em both, yes, even Jim. :)
I played maneater for a bit when it was free on epic, but it was so grindy that I was done with it quickly. I spent around 4 hours in the opening area and was well off from being able to progress.
Another game that released later this year is a psychological game called BARK!. It's a unique and serious concept about a topic that hits home for me. The gameplay is kinda whatever, but the premise I REALLY vibe with.
Check out Peace Island, if you can. It's not out yet, though it has a few rough alphas out. It's a 100% indie game based on Unity that sets you as a cat in an island in Maine deserted by the humans. Your mission is to discover why they fled and evalue if it's worth bringing them back.
The 360 Alien vs Predator game is such an underrated gem, made me genuinely happy to see it on this list 🔥

Shelter 1/2/3 are short indie games of wild animals and their cubs trying to survive. Worth mentioning because its artstyle is really cute.

I played Okami SOOO much back on the PS3. It is a timeless classic that has aged very well, imo.

I would have added Sim Ant for PC/Mac and SNES. Taking over the yard and then eventually the human house was a fantastic game growing up.
I know Empire of the Undergrowth is getting there, but there’s no survival mode with yard/house takeover yet.
Billy Bob and Dennis Hopper sounded so happy and enthusiastic in that game lol.

I played the sequel to Okami; Okamiden, on the Nintendo DS. The celestial brush mechanic used the touchscreen of the device and it felt very natural to use.

2:53 Ive never heard of this game, but at one point (some 15 years ago) I had a pet tarantula called Rosae (she was a chilean rose, hence the name) and a scorpion (who was a little d*ck) called Jim. I miss em both, yes, even Jim. :)

I played maneater for a bit when it was free on epic, but it was so grindy that I was done with it quickly. I spent around 4 hours in the opening area and was well off from being able to progress.

Another game that released later this year is a psychological game called BARK!. It's a unique and serious concept about a topic that hits home for me. The gameplay is kinda whatever, but the premise I REALLY vibe with.
Some other hidden gems; Styx master of shadows and Stubbs the zombie. Great games! ☺️
I remember playing Okami on PS2 when it first came out. There are few magical games I have played, and Okami is undoubtedly one of them.
Check out Peace Island, if you can. It's not out yet, though it has a few rough alphas out. It's a 100% indie game based on Unity that sets you as a cat in an island in Maine deserted by the humans. Your mission is to discover why they fled and evalue if it's worth bringing them back.
I love Okami. I still play it to this day.
Avp definitely deserves a remaster, reboot, remake, re-something. I loveeed that game honestly.
Tokyo Jungle is so much fun. My gf and I played it in 2022 on ps catalog. It was really ahead of its time.
