My dad was in the merchant marine during WWII. He only related one story to me. Sailing out of New York they broke a propeller shaft and had to get towed back to Port. The ship that took their place in the convoy was sunk within sight of New York harbor.
Deck guns were removed because the Allies started putting guns on most merchants. Even a lowly 2 lber can be fatal to a UBoat, so surface engagements were not encouraged. Makes sense to seperate this off into another game. The late war was so much different than the early war in the Atlantic. I just got done playing Silent Hunter 3 for the last few months, and made it through the war. In that game, late war is constant air threat. Snorkels are essential. Radar makes it difficult to move on the surface at all.
Also deck guns made the submarine noisier underwater as did putting flak guns on the conning tower. It's better to have a smooth shape gliding underwater because it gives the enemy hydrophone operators less disturbance to hear. It became increasingly rare that the guns could be used to any worthwhile effect so better to get rid of them all to help with quiet running.
I was excited to see this in my feed after viewing the SU&SD video and seeing one of these sub titles on your shelf. I've been playing a bit of SH3 to scratch that itch. Viewing this is going to make me order the series. Thanks for taking the time to make this.
You look so lonely without Grant. :) But I'm glad you guys are doing the responsible thing and keeping apart. Wishing you and yours the best of health.
or maybe it's the basement that looks like a prison cell! Possibly the title of the game might make one feel cringy as well....I know I cringe from playing U-boat games.
Thanks Alexander, great review. As you like solo and subs, have you tried Nemo's War yet? One of the best solo games I've seen with a great narrative, ample decision making, great bits, and good replayability as well.
In fact in your exemple type VII dont' go to India not because of the base they originated from. Basically they can't go there because that kind of submarine can't reach so far a sea (not enough fuel, not enough food stored in it to make it simple). Only IX type (much more endurant) could do so. From 1943 to 1944 all VII and IX started basically from the same bases in France (Lorient, Saint Nazaire, La Rochelle, La Palice and Brest..Well some were also based in Norway to track the road of convoys going to Murmansk. It's odd there no much chance of contact in Bay of Biscain. From 1940 to early 1943 that's ok. But it was, at that time of war the Hunted took place, a killing zone for U-boot. Not from convoy or ship...but the Coastal Command was swarming the region with everything that could fly and attack a submarine inbound or outbound. It will became in mid 1943 the region where the U-boot got the more losses. The picture on the box portraided on one of the attempts to stop that destrucrion there with some odd U-boot carrying AA guns in the double. Well didn't acheived much in fact as those ships were not well armed to cope with the menace. For the aircraft attacks...well...that's painfully historical. The allied air supremacy over the sea was really the killer of UbootWaffe, not the escort. Mosquito (over the bay of Biscain), Sunderland, Catalina and Liberator were the key to victory of the allied in Atlantic as they could track down the sub without being seing by it (with a big help from boarded radar also)
I ordered the series and probably won't see it arrive until after covid19, I am wondering if the game does anything in particular about the allies improvement in sound and radar equipment?
I like Silent Victory the most, the progression curve is the greatest. It's also almost three times as long as this one. And you get to be the Allies, which is nice. Haven't played The Hunters yet though. I like how bite size this one is time wise. You get through a career quickly and can assess how you did.
So I started with Silent Victory. Added The Hunters (not played it yet) and will probably add this down the road! There’s another - Beneath the Med, Italian based subs! Desta de Gaguzza’s (Squash heads) for Italians joining with Hitler, but oh well. We have a new sub game because of it, lol!! Thanks Alaxander and Grant!!

If you haven't played uboat yet I highly encourage you do. Especially when the uboat expanded mod is updated for the current patch

Thanks for this review. Helped me take the plunge and buy 'Beneath the Med'. Really enjoying playing thru it right now!
I have this game... I love it! It’s a great comparison to the Silent Hunter PC games.
Very good summary. I really like what you said about it and it has made my short list. Thanks
Thanks for the change of shirt ... i still have ptsd.... 😰
The manual for this game is abysmal. I almost returned it, but now more confident to try again. Thanks for helping by showing a play through example.
Nice and thorough review as always! May I ask what particular dice tower is that on the table?
A classic, you need to roll really low for detection, rolls a double six.
Quite a contrast to the review of the Hunted I just saw on SUSD. Nice shirt by the way :-)
Shut Up and Sit Down excoriated this game in their review yesterday so it's nice to get some balance from TPA.

It's mostly abstract, but the rolls to avoid detection are particularly punishing, so it's wrapped up in that.
I've only played a couple of games of The Hunters so far. Is attacking the escort something new in The Hunted?
Just picked it up
pretty sure you've got the attack vs escorts wrong. I'm sure you can't attack escorts, they go in the box above the cargo ships on the attack table
Could you please rank the titles? I got the Hunters now I am thinking what next silent or the hunted?
Thanks....

I was gonna ask the same, got our answer👍🏼
If you hadn't attacked the escort, would it have been more difficult to detect you?
Yes, but if you can hit/sink it - problem solved
@@ThePlayersAid Pretty big if though. :)
Yeah that was a good way of showing how taking damage works
@@johnsy4306 Massive.

It looks good. I will buy it.
Can you fire off another torpedo while getting attacked??
To much dice rolling. Where is the decision making ? Where is the reward of good tactics ?
