I grew up in the 80’s and early 90’s! And the music from that time period was amazing! So great choice! Music has always been my passion since I was a kid!
I remember waking up to this song one morning in the early 90's. I woke up just a few moments before 6am when the radio alarm clicked on and started playing this song. The best way I can describe it is that it felt like God had created that morning just for me. I'll don't think I'll ever forget that morning.
This is creepy. When I was very small, probably around 4, I woke up very early, walked out of my room and into the living room. It was dark. This music video was playing on the television and I have never forgotten that moment. I don't even know why it was so moving and impactful, but it was. It's been on my playlists since I have been able to download music.
My grandmother died three weeks ago and I chose to play this at her funeral because she used to dance with my brother and cousins and I to this song. I asked permission to organise her funeral because she was my best friend, confidant, and I simply just adored her. She loved this song. As the only Granddaughter, I felt it was my duty to organise a celebration of her life. I couldn't cope with my dad and his brother trying to organise a ceremony for her by themselves and didn't want them to choose the outfit she wore in her coffin. I chose a watermelon pink dress I knew she'd adore. She looked so beautiful and at peace. I spoke a eulogy and then my Dad did then I chose this song to pause and reflect on her views. I cried my eyes out because I knew she would like an upbeat song at her celebration. My Dad held my hand and told me I had made the most beautiful celebration of his mother's life he could ever imagine. There are a lot of reasons why I chose this song, and maybe some family members didn't love it, but it was true to her spirit. I hope she loved it. Thank you, Billy.

I’m sorry for your loss. My dad passed two years + four months ago. He was a musician, so… the music at the funeral had to be just right. It was one of the last things we could do for him. A couple of his oldest friends in the music business played at the funeral which honestly blew me away. I’m not sure I would have been able to do that! But we were so grateful and it was exactly what he would have wanted. You might still want to cry years down the road when you hear this song - that’s sort of how it’s gone for me. But ultimately it’s for a good reason. Music is medicine for the soul❤️
He said he heard this song in a dream and when he woke up he grabbed a tape recorder and started singing what he could remember. I think the angels gave him this song to share with the world.
What's wild is I never knew the music video was recorded in Connecticut. I drive under that train bridge they're on at 0:30 legitimately every other day, that's insane.
I used to have trouble falling asleep as a child, but then my brother would put this song on and id fall right to sleep right away! but have awful nightmares. Worth it I guess
Woke up this morning after years of not listening to this song and all of a sudden the lyrics were pouring out. I think my Dad was singing in my ear. God, I miss you.
hi stranger, if you’re reading this. i just wanna tell you that you matter and you’re important ❤ i know you are tired,, but please never give up. okay? i believe you can do it :) and i’m proud of you!! even though i dont know you. always think positive and ignore the negativity that surrounds you. focus on positive side and the things that makes you happy. you are doing great hun. 😙 let’s keep going. we can get through this together. you are worth it. sending virtual hugs to everyone 🥰🤗have a good sleep tonight. tell your loved ones that you love them. sweet dreams my dear~ always smile 😊
As a child I had a hard time falling asleep at night, especially by myself. My brother used to put this on at night to help me sleep. Still comforting ☺️
I shared a room with my brother growing up. I've asked him, and he denied owning it, but when I was 7 ir 8 I remember digging through our closet and found a blank tape with two songs on it. This was on one side and GnR's Sweet Child O Mine on the other. Since then, to this day, my favorite band has always been Guns N' Roses and I've always had unapologetic respect for Billy Joel. Whenever Elton John comes on the radio or somebody mentions him, my first response is always on the line of, "I like Billy Joel better." Lol.
I’ve been a fan of Billy Joel for years, but seeing this video was a reminder of how unfair life is. Specifically, it is not fair that a single individual should be endowed with such remarkable songwriting and musical performance talents. He has produced so much great music that it’s sometimes hard to keep track of it all. Seeing this video reminded me of his creative use of a “gospel-like” backing choir in this terrific song. My thanks to whoever posted the video…and all good wishes to Billy. He is in the Pantheon with great American songwriters like Jerome Kern, Irving Berlin, George and Ira Gershwin. He is a national treasure.
River of dreams lyrics Enjoy! In the middle of the night I go walking in my sleep From the mountains of faith To the river so deep I must be looking for something Something sacred I lost But the river is wide And it's too hard to cross Even though I know the river is wide I walk down every evening and I stand on the shore I try to cross to the opposite side So I can finally find out what I've been looking for In the middle of the night I go walking in my sleep Through the valley of fear To a river so deep I've been searching for something Taken out of my soul Something I'd never lose Something somebody stole I don't know why I go walking at night But now I'm tired and I don't want to walk anymore I hope it doesn't take the rest of my life Until I find what it is that I've been looking for In the middle of the night I go walking in my sleep Through the jungle of doubt To a river so deep I know I'm searching for something Something so undefined That it can only be seen By the eyes of the blind In the middle of the night I'm not sure about a life after this God knows I've never been a spiritual man Baptized by the fire, I wade into the river That runs to the promised land In the middle of the night I go walking in my sleep Through the desert of truth To the river so deep We all end in the ocean We all start in the streams We're all carried along By the river of dreams In the middle of the night
Out walking well limping at this time in my city. Some call it a bad place I call it home. I love the peace at this time I still have my stick with me though. Listening to this trying to stretch out the back because I can't sleep. Song is appropriate right now 🙂 sick of these no sleeping nights
This is perhaps the greatest song of the 90's. It will be a sad day in the music industry when The Piano Man retires. An entire generation is going to grow up NOT knowing Billy Joel, and that breaks my heart. I have seen Billy 15 times in 20 years. My first concert was in Shea Stadium, and my last concert was The Last Play at Shea Stadium. Full circle. Pardon me while I go cry.
Mr Joel, I am from China and this is the first time I have watched this video, although I have been a big fan of the song previously. I have to admit - the video wasn't what I imagined it to be just listening to the song.. But to me that's the great thing about your music. I appreciate the American motifs you embed in your songs but to me the message in your lyrics transcend the American experience. I just find it fascinating that I as a native Chinese speaker, living in a totally alien culture from you, can find a connection in the words of this song
ouroboros1409 Between different cultures and countries governments cause most of the trouble. The people for the most part could get along. Just like this music.
The bridge they are on at 0:31 is in Portland CT. I go there countless times it’s so nice especially at night. It’s crazy to think I stood where Billy Joel stood.
Anyone that has come here is looking for peace, coming back to cleanse a heart and soul. This is when you remember the ones you love. There may something spiritual, inspirational but there is something, just a pull with a touch while floating down the river of dreams.
Billy Joel gave the greatest, most exciting performance I've ever seen. It was New Haven Coliseum around 1989. Then came this song, his greatest accomplishment ever. He's an awesome poet, this is one of greatest songs I've ever heard. Keep going Billy! Keep us going.
I had the pleasure of seeing him in 2021 in Cincinnati. He had such a way of talking and joking with the audience. A fair majority of the songs he took a poll on which between two songs we wanted to hear. I got to hear him play a majority of my faves, including this one. 💛
Billy Joel has had so many great songs throughout the decades but this has always been in my list of favorites. The Piano Man has something special in his music and I always find his music uplifting.
Sorry for the lost 😔 Thank you for being a wonderful fan. I appreciate your comment. I hope you are having a good day? Thank you so much for the love and support,God bless you💕❤💕🥰💕
I just watched an excerpt where Billy Joel was saying this song came to him one morning, and he didn't know why. He said he was never a religious man, but the song would not leave him. He recorded it, and here we are. Sometimes we are given blessings and don't know why.
I hope people finally realize what a musical genius Billy Joel is. He could play every instrument on this trak. Do all the arrangement himself. And still look cool af in a pair of raybans.
Did he really? That would be interesting. It is impressive, but you don’t have to be a genius to play all the instruments on this track, you just need basic knowledge of them all. Now writing a hit song, that’s different!
Anyone else here from Billy Joel’s tiktok? Talking about how he heard the tune and the words in his dreams, couldn’t shake it off. Kept thinking about it. He says he’s not a biblical person but the whole song has biblical references that to this day he doesn’t understand. To me, I feel like the Holy Spirit spoke to him 😊
This is the first song I recall hearing during my childhood. My dad would play it over and over in his truck on the cassette player. I always think of this song when I think about my Dad.
"It could only be seen; By the eyes of the blind. In the middle of the night". "Lord knows, I've never been a spiritual man" Those two lyrics confirm his genius.
I loved this song when it first came out, I told my dad everytime the add for the Album came on TV, he would just smile. He bought me the cassette of the album for Christmas that year. I lost him on the 19th of May this year, this song always reminds me of his smiling face. Rest easy dad x
Man this song uplifts the soul. Men and Ladies keep your heads up. Everything's gonna be 👍. GOD loves us so let's pass his love to each other. On a side note, THEY JUST DON'T MAKE MUSIC LIKE THEY USED TO. ....... GOOD CHEERS AND LIFE TO ALL!
July 2023 Best BJ song ever, and there are too many to list. It tells of acceptance of one’s human limitations and frailty, yet is deeply life-affirming. A song that acknowledges occasional fearfulness but leaves one with HOPE will remain forever a classic.
Same here, the only up tempo song to ever do that, I remember hearing it first time on the radio in 1993, I didn’t think any song could ever top An Innocent Man, and here we are.
How anyone can dislike this song is honestly beyond me. It's spiritual, has superb music, Billy Joel sings like he's singing for his life, the lyrics are excellent, he sings it with such conviction that you believe he means every word. I've only just recently found this song and I can say it's one of my favourite songs of all time already.
Actually, I don't think that it is the music itself but the atmosphere and the images in the video that people dislike. They very likely associate the song with a specific geography and a way of life, and those are in turn associated with negative things that have been happening during these last few years. I have witnessed this reaction twice, where people said that the song in itself is beautiful, but that the images remind them of certain things they are confronted with daily, tired of and wish to avoid. This is how human brain works - even though the sound is superb and uplifting, to those whose subconsciousness finds the images disturbing, it will cause an emotional reaction of uneasiness and overpower the positivity. It is called association, it is emotional rather than rational and it is NOT wilful. Sometimes, everyday's negativity creeps in and spoils most beautiful things.
Just my opinion but this is the best song he ever wrote. There is so much passion, so much pain, so much wonder happening here. It is a beautiful song.
I had a dream of a beautiful song , woke up n forgot it, it was something the world had never heard & I was gonna turn it into a masterpiece, it was an acapella song. Now I had to search ppl who dreamt of songs & made them, thinking they'll make me remember, I'm stumbling upon beautiful masterpieces like this 🔥♥️
A testament to Billy Joel's greatness. I always find myself remembering the words to most of his songs while I sing along, even though my initial thoughts are "Oh yeah, I remember this one. Haven't heard it in years."
"In the middle of the night I go walking in my sleep Through the desert of truth To the river so deep We all end in the ocean We all start in the streams We're all carried along By the river of dreams In the middle of the night ..." A song for the soul!
As a teenager I moved 400 miles to the coast . This song played constantlyon the radio . . My own children are now beyond their teens and they came from the river of dreams . As my youngest embarks on a new chapter working for the local hospital I pray God guides.her . He comes from the place at the other side of this river . The river of dreams . Xxxxx thank you God and bless you Sarah Rose. X ❤

I’m so sorry for your loss but this is a Great song and singer
So sorry for your loss prayers sent great song
I'm sorry for your loss.
This is my favorite Billy Joel song. No contest.
Same!!!
He said he heard this song in a dream and when he woke up he grabbed a tape recorder and started singing what he could remember. I think the angels gave him this song to share with the world.
Que lindo.
The angels dont sell songs.... but the devil is known to.... no wonder I love him ;)

What's wild is I never knew the music video was recorded in Connecticut. I drive under that train bridge they're on at 0:30 legitimately every other day, that's insane.
Billy Joel, Elton John...true giants of our era. Any singer/song writer would kill to have just one of their song credits
Bernie Taupin for Elton John
well folks, Billy Joel's final Album and last big hit is now 30 years old. Feeling old yet?
A young kind of old, but always younger listening to Billy. 🎹😎♥️
So true. I was in Walmart this week and this song came on over their public address speakers and I literally started dancing in the aisle. I am 81! 😊
30 years ago and here it is 2024 and he still sells out arenas.
Valley of fear...
Gospel!!!
Jungle of doubts
Hallelujah, glory, glory!
I used to have trouble falling asleep as a child, but then my brother would put this song on and id fall right to sleep right away! but have awful nightmares.
Worth it I guess
If someone played me this before bedtime I'm straight out of bed and start singing
Woke up this morning after years of not listening to this song and all of a sudden the lyrics were pouring out. I think my Dad was singing in my ear. God, I miss you.
How funny, getting ready for bed and the exact same thing happened to me. First thing i thought, "pops is taking to you" ♥️
hi stranger, if you’re reading this. i just wanna tell you that you matter and you’re important ❤ i know you are tired,, but please never give up. okay? i believe you can do it :) and i’m proud of you!! even though i dont know you. always think positive and ignore the negativity that surrounds you. focus on positive side and the things that makes you happy. you are doing great hun. 😙 let’s keep going. we can get through this together. you are worth it. sending virtual hugs to everyone 🥰🤗have a good sleep tonight. tell your loved ones that you love them. sweet dreams my dear~ always smile 😊
2 years later and you reached me. Thank you 😊 you as well
❤
❤ same to you 😊
Beautiful and inspiración for my ❤ and soul. Thank you. My Blessings😊
Isn't it just.
You have the best brother let him know it
2024 This is so uplifting.
This was my dad's favorite song, and he passed away recently. This beautiful song is now more precious to me than I ever imagined.
Sorry for your loss, may he rest in everlasting peace
This guy has got a lot of hits. Amazing
.
U don’t know billy Joel ??!!!
This guy haha :D
Do you think?
YEAH AMAZING .... YES TALENT! ...... WOW ...... MUSICIAN!
Mr.Joel has TALENT....
i agree with you 💯%
I agree
If you have this much appreciation for this talented man…. You need to look up his newest song “turn the lights back on”… and get your Kleenex 🥹
this song reminds me of my dad!🥹 he used to listened to this every night and i loved it!!
"We all end in the ocean
We all start in the streams
We're all carried along
By the river of dreams"
My favourite part.

Yes indeed
It references abt fish in streams, GREAT lyrics.
River of dreams lyrics
Enjoy!
In the middle of the night
I go walking in my sleep
From the mountains of faith
To the river so deep
I must be looking for something
Something sacred I lost
But the river is wide
And it's too hard to cross
Even though I know the river is wide
I walk down every evening and I stand on the shore
I try to cross to the opposite side
So I can finally find out what I've been looking for
In the middle of the night
I go walking in my sleep
Through the valley of fear
To a river so deep
I've been searching for something
Taken out of my soul
Something I'd never lose
Something somebody stole
I don't know why I go walking at night
But now I'm tired and I don't want to walk anymore
I hope it doesn't take the rest of my life
Until I find what it is that I've been looking for
In the middle of the night
I go walking in my sleep
Through the jungle of doubt
To a river so deep
I know I'm searching for something
Something so undefined
That it can only be seen
By the eyes of the blind
In the middle of the night
I'm not sure about a life after this
God knows I've never been a spiritual man
Baptized by the fire, I wade into the river
That runs to the promised land
In the middle of the night
I go walking in my sleep
Through the desert of truth
To the river so deep
We all end in the ocean
We all start in the streams
We're all carried along
By the river of dreams
In the middle of the night
Bravo thank you 💯
Thanks for putting these lyrics up
Thank you
Thanks xxx
Thanks for the lyrics. I have been singing this wrong.
No one will forget the great hilly joel
@@gardetto265 you mean Billy Joel
I prayed for an angel to send me a message in my sleep and I woke up to this song in my head.
Fun fact, Billy pretty much came up with this in his sleep.
The Lord works in mysterious ways , my friend

I wait a message from my father! I miss him tremendly!
My mom loved this song, had it played as we was walking in at her funeral, I sang every word walked out in tears. Love you mother duck xx
One of the best songs he ever wrote. And there were many.
Impossible not to be in love with this song! It's a lot of talent!
Tu as bien raison
Billy Joel was and is still one of the best!
Agreed
So much true! You cannot have that feeling......just with any song.
That was beautifully written and reminds me of my thinking about cultures like Chinese Kenyan English Spanish etc
ouroboros1409 it was great to read your comment buddy...
ouroboros1409 Between different cultures and countries governments cause most of the trouble. The people for the most part could get along. Just like this music.

My grandfathers favorite songs, he didn’t have too many. I miss you abuelo!!
Played the last summer holidays before my parents sent me off to boarding school. This song was last of a normal childhood for me.
The bridge they are on at 0:31 is in Portland CT. I go there countless times it’s so nice especially at night. It’s crazy to think I stood where Billy Joel stood.

Billy Joel you the best singer ever!!!!!!!
Anyone that has come here is looking for peace, coming back to cleanse a heart and soul.
This is when you remember the ones you love. There may something spiritual, inspirational but there is something, just a pull with a touch while floating down the river of dreams.
Billy is so talented. He's a living legend. He's a spectacular musician . Seen him 3 times in concert. Never disappointed. Absolutely amazing
Phil Collins too
this song is eternally spiritual in essence ❤️
Billy Joel gave the greatest, most exciting performance I've ever seen. It was New Haven Coliseum around 1989. Then came this song, his greatest accomplishment ever. He's an awesome poet, this is one of greatest songs I've ever heard. Keep going Billy! Keep us going.
And he still gives his best! saw him last year in Austin when he came for F1 event. He is an amazing performer.
I had the pleasure of seeing him in 2021 in Cincinnati. He had such a way of talking and joking with the audience. A fair majority of the songs he took a poll on which between two songs we wanted to hear. I got to hear him play a majority of my faves, including this one. 💛
verdad!
@Joel Billy Thanks Billy. You touch my soul.
Billy Joel has had so many great songs throughout the decades but this has always been in my list of favorites.
The Piano Man has something special in his music and I always find his music uplifting.
“I’m not sure about a life after this god knows I’ve never been a spiritual man.” Love this lyric and Billy Joel your a legend.

bro you literally wanna made me cry in middle of a night 😢 for real.. its 12:23 right now...
I just watched an excerpt where Billy Joel was saying this song came to him one morning, and he didn't know why. He said he was never a religious man, but the song would not leave him. He recorded it, and here we are. Sometimes we are given blessings and don't know why.
I think we watched the same thing cos I came here immediately I saw that clip
A true beauty of a song - just fills me to the brim like no other ! God bless Billy Joel !!
I hope people finally realize what a musical genius Billy Joel is. He could play every instrument on this trak. Do all the arrangement himself. And still look cool af in a pair of raybans.
You say it like there are people that dispute this?
Everybody looks cool in a pair of RayBans
Did he really? That would be interesting. It is impressive, but you don’t have to be a genius to play all the instruments on this track, you just need basic knowledge of them all. Now writing a hit song, that’s different!
Such a unique song. Never gets old!
Yeah I remember the day the moment and where I was when I heard River of Dreams for the first time. Almost 30 years later.
yes, this song brings me peace when I am sad or worried about something
As a middletownian I am proud to say this video was filmed herw

Oh, cool. He was a Aquarius like Axl Rose.
Same here but it was my mom.
Same here! But for my grandpa :) It was his fav song.

Those two lyrics confirm his genius.

One of the most spiritual songs out there. Really uplifting.
Billy isn't religious, i know :D Joel means "God is God" in Hebrew.
Judith Pachler Religion and spirituality aren't always the same thing
Honestly i'm so glad that Billy isn't religious.
It gives that positive vibe
One of the greatest musics of all time! Billy was really inspired when created it.
I loved this song when it first came out, I told my dad everytime the add for the Album came on TV, he would just smile. He bought me the cassette of the album for Christmas that year. I lost him on the 19th of May this year, this song always reminds me of his smiling face. Rest easy dad x

Best BJ song ever, and there are too many to list. It tells of acceptance of one’s human limitations and frailty, yet is deeply life-affirming. A song that acknowledges occasional fearfulness but leaves one with HOPE will remain forever a classic.
My son and daughter pin law , saw Billy Joel in Philly. My son remembered me playing this song. One of my favorites
This song still gives me goosebumps. It's that good. 😊

Same here, the only up tempo song to ever do that, I remember hearing it first time on the radio in 1993, I didn’t think any song could ever top An Innocent Man, and here we are.
Gives me a borderline painful lump in my throat. Really beautiful melody, lyrics, lead and backing vocals.
Me too 👍
Why don't I remember going for my walks in the middle of the night?😢
How anyone can dislike this song is honestly beyond me. It's spiritual, has superb music, Billy Joel sings like he's singing for his life, the lyrics are excellent, he sings it with such conviction that you believe he means every word. I've only just recently found this song and I can say it's one of my favourite songs of all time already.
Because some people don't like spiritual music.
Masterpiece !
Just my opinion but this is the best song he ever wrote. There is so much passion, so much pain, so much wonder happening here. It is a beautiful song.
What does it mean?
@@shanisatorre3041 I’d say soul searching and questioning his meaning in life

I'd not heard this song in years. Then I found it and realised I knew every word. A classic. ❤️
It's always a good feeling when that happens right?!
A testament to Billy Joel's greatness. I always find myself remembering the words to most of his songs while I sing along, even though my initial thoughts are "Oh yeah, I remember this one. Haven't heard it in years."
I heard this while shopping at Walmart today.
