I joined the Army in 1983, and this song released on the night before I left. My girlfriend, now wife, was with me, and this became our wedding song, and is still our favourite
This song came out when my then-fiance had just left on a 6-month tour of duty on the USS Ranger, which subsequently turned into about 7.5 months because of world events. It was a loooonngg wait for him to return. We've now been married 40 years in March. Time flies by but this song is timeless. Elton John is an absolute icon and a gift to music.
I grew up in a very dysfunctional family. Severe childhood and generational trauma. I had a terrible relationship with my dad and still do. I’m 50 now. I grew up listening to Elton John. My dad could never show me love but one thing he gave me, was fabulous taste in music. Music has been my saviour. This is my all time favourite Elton John song. ❤️
Yes, me and my Dad totally clash, he’s not going to change, I’m done trying to change myself for him to like me, he won’t!!! He’s 84 now, just dying before my eyes, it’s sad but he’s already dead in a lot of ways.
Am gonna sing it live for the first time tomorrow (which is why I came here, I was actually curious where it was filmed)... I grew up with the same sentiment & have been looking forward to singing it for years, a stunning song & generational
I'm brazilian. My native language is Portuguese. This song was one of the reasons to learn English. I was very young and...I was caught in a trap: it was love at "first hear" that lasts to this day. Just love this song🥰🥰
Makes me remember my husband going off to basic training and leaving our daughter and me behind for 3 months. I sang this song a lot while he was gone, and cried a lot too. 35 years on and it can still make me cry.
Listening April 2024 on my 69th birthday, remembering the times I listened to this song when my husband and I were stationed on opposite sides of the planet when we were both in the Navy. Between this song and "Right Here Waiting" we survived the deployments and separations. My eternal thanks to their creators.
One of the many things I respect about Elton John is that he has never tried to hide the fact that Bernie Taupin wrote most of his best songs. Bernie is one of the very few songwriters whose name is actually known. Songwriters and actual vocalists in films are usually unknown.
How is Elton so good? I mean, God gives us all gifts, but Elton's gift changed the world.... He's just a phenom. I'm so grateful I was alive during his time and could really appreciate his music
The strength and power in this song is that Boy is leaving girl for a while and instead of moaning about how tough it is to be apart, he emphasises the positive aspects and says they will be stronger if they get on with their lives during this period. They are BRAVE optimistic lyrics. We need to be given courage in our lives and this song does just that. It strengthens us and gives us the beauty of the tune as well. Bernie and Elton at their best.
I read years later that Bernie Taupin wasn't happy with those lyrics he wrote. He thought it was irresponsible. I can see his point, but most people who love the song, love that line.
Last year, I heard he was coming to Chicago. I couldn’t find no one to go with me. So didn’t get tickets. But the day of... I said let me do this for myself. I drove to downtown Chicago and a young man was selling his ticket for 40 bucks. I got it, ran inside and this song was playing as I found my seat. THE BEST PERFORMANCE I WITNESS IN MY LIFE. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I am from Chicago but I saw him in California and yes best concert I was ever had sang and was just totally emotionally happy, I was 20 years old lol I’m now 60 and still love hearing him
Really?! No wonder why I love that part of the song. I don’t like the sound of harmonicas but for some reason this was the only exception, probably that’s why!
In 1987 I was 17. Fell in love with a Marine. Whenever I hear this I'm 17 again in study hall missing him looking out the window, feeling sorry for myself.
As a young, 16 year old Irish lad ( who had only come to London a week earlier ) I stood by the wall of Crofton park railway station watching this video being made. Where have all the years gone?
In my humble opinion...Elton's very best song NOT included within his "golden period" of 1971-1975. The piano, his vocal and a tight arrangement all make this a memorable tune for me. Cheers!
This song is one of my favorites from Elton. The 80s were such a magical time to grow up. I was 10 in 1983, and I love this song just as much now as I did when it was first released.
Just in case you didn't realize how amazing this song was, that's Stevie Wonder on the harmonica. Two of the greatest artists of their generation together.
Got to see Elton John in concert just last week and man even at 70+ he rocks the stadium. Probably my favorite live show I've ever seen! God Bless Elton John!
Nice to see he still has it. I was lucky to have sat side of stage at his Adelaide leg of the Piano men tour with Billy (late 90s from memory), they were both fantastic, but totally chalk and cheese people I must say. Elton takes his house with him on tour, his trailer was like a home (my partner got his table flower arrangement which was, well, it was bloody huge)... Billy's by complete contrast, well, I would question he spent more than a few moments in there lol
I'm here because when I was maybe 5 or 6 playing this on my mom's record player wrapped up in a blanket on her porch while it was raining... It gave me comfort. This song has carried me through different situations throughout my 37 years....
Life on the road regardless of whether they overindulge is tough so I'm told. I wish Elton who did a long, long, longer life. Never sleeping in your own bed takes years off. They do it to sell records, to build a career and to become pop stars. Use to be you toured to sell records. Class dismissed. Smiley Face. This song reintroduced me to Elton's greatness.
I stopped listening to most music made after 2000 , I keep an ear out for music somewhat but I mostly listen to the music that I grew up with and I get to go back in time every time I hear those awesome tunes .
One of Elton's best in my opinion, how does he make so many meaningful songs sound happy enough to dance to and sing to? I fudge up the words all the time but my heart feels full ❤️❤️❤️
He always seemed to surround himself with excellent musicians. This is probably my favorite Elton John song. Reminds me of when I had to leave my fiancé to go to boot camp. But unlike the song, my gal stayed faithful. 44 years later, here we are.
It was songs like this that helped bring down the Iron Curtain. If one had watched this video in 1983/4, one would have surely felt that the Iron Curtain countries' days were numbered. How could it have been otherwise?
Same thing happened to me, one year together and engaged. Than after we are broke up she is talking to a new guy. But Eltons Music has made it easier to get through.
I was born in the wrong era. Only 16 and came across this song not too long ago. Very quickly became a favourite. If only I was older to get the chance to see elton live. What an experience that must be.
In 83 I was a teenager so intense that still hurts... Listening this beautiful song in those days was like burning myself orbiting the sun... Today's just listening again is more like some drops getting out of my eyes trying to feel back in my autumn those wonderful times of a January man
When this first came out in 1983 I was with a group of girlfriends, 19 years old and clubbing as everybody did back then. A cute guy asked me to dance to this song and I accepted. We married in 1984 and still happily married! When I met him he was in pilot training in the USAF and I wasn’t at all familiar with anyone in the military so my life was going to change drastically, but I’ve loved every bit of it. This song was just so perfect for us at that time. Somehow over the years I forgot about this song until recently. Loving it again.
The Too Low For Zero album has special meaning for Elton, as it reunited him with Taupin and is also where he met his first spouse, Renate Blauel, who was an engineer on the sessions. Elton cites this song as his favorite from the set, telling Rolling Stone, "It's just a great song to sing. It's timeless."
I saw him when I was 16 years old in Nashville. My first concert. Saw him many many times after that. I thought Elton and Bernie were songwriting geniuses than and still do.
TH-cam's great, I went from Slipknot to My Chemical Romance to Elton John and loved every song along the way. Music is magical and life's too short to not branch out into tons of genres. 🌈
Here i am, listening to this almost 35 years later, and loving it just as much as i would then. I wonder how many hits of these modern artists people will listen to in 35 years....
35 years from now, people will love a few of today's artists just as much as you love Elton's music now. In the same way people loved artists from 70 years ago. It all comes full circle, guaranteed. Just give it time. Such is life.
This is a timeless masterpiece! Has Elton ever done a bad song -no period. Cause he’s a legend. That catchy melody and Stevies harmonica. What a tune 🎶🎶🎶 love Elton 💕
This man is a time machine... Every generation he continues to produce amazing, everlasting hits...Neither time or space confines his amazing talents..
I have admired Elton John throughout the whole of his career and loved every song he has played and sung especially this song and will have this played when I leave this earth .
Dude no. Blues traveler lead singer is the literal king of the harmonica. He wears like 30 of them when he plays. He IS the harmonica. Stevie wonder is the 2nd best in the world hes also a legend
Don't wish it away Don't look at it like it's forever Between you and me I could honestly say That things can only get better And while I'm away Dust out the demons inside And it won't be long before you and me run To the place in our hearts where we hide And I guess that's why they call it the blues Time on my hands could be time spent with you Laughing like children, living like lovers Rolling like thunder under the covers And I guess that's why they call it the blues Just stare into space Picture my face in your hands Live for each second without hesitation And never forget I'm your man Wait on me girl Cry in the night if it helps But more than ever I simply love you More than I love life itself
I heard this song when it first came out. The first time the video aired on MTV, when it was MTV. I fell in love with the song and the words. The video was so compelling and I knew exactly how the guy felt when he was in boot camp and layed down in the street in the pouring rain. I Sir Elton John, the man has lived and I believe by the music he writes, he has loved and lost. What a great song. It will ever remain in my top 3.
I have an older brother named Daniel and even though he's still alive, I cry everytime I hear the song. We don't live in the same country. When I hear the part" Oh I miss Daniel, I miss him so much" it really hits hard
I'm here again because this song randomly pops into my head and I start singing along to the lyrics. Sir Elton John will always be a legend in my eyes, ears and heart.
The true reason its called to blues is because anyone who has ever loved can relate to the words of this genius. It truly is better to have loved and lost but its never better to except a broken heart and not do anything. Elton is truly a good man for writing this and someone saved my life tonight
Christopher Matthew Landry - I listened to this song a million times over when we broke up.... your wonderful mother introduced it to me and i fell in love with it like I fell in love with you - hard and fast - and now its one of my all time favorites, to listen to it always brings back fond memories of our time together - and it broke my heart when you left this world so young, and without me ever being able to tell you how I really felt... lesson learned....your son is the spitting image of you, such a handsome young man, you would be so so proud....i know you watch over us all...may you rest in peace, and ill see you on the other side...
I’ve been listening to this song since I was four and almost thirteen years later this song still tears me up. I can listen to every single live rendition of this and not tear up and I listen to the original version and it tears me up.
I joined the Army in 1983, and this song released on the night before I left. My girlfriend, now wife, was with me, and this became our wedding song, and is still our favourite
Omg that's so sweet ❤
That’s very beautiful. I how I wish I was a teenager in the 80s. Or just not this time period
Reminiscences are so essential in this fairly fruitless hopeless life

My favourite elton john song
I was 3 or 4 years old. Remember it vividly from the car seat.
It’s the first song I remember giving me that feeling
In my opinion this is one of the most perfect songs ever written. Most definitely my favourite Elton song.
I love it as well, but I must say it took me a few years to pick my top five.
I agree.
Totally agree!! 👍
The video is cool as well.
It's up there but I love Nikita the best
Real fact.
Stevie Wonder came to the studio and did the harmonica in this song in one try....that's it...one time and ABSOLUTELY killed it.🤯😆
That's why he's named Stevie Wonder.
He's also on the Eurhythmics "Must Be An Angel".
I'm surprised.

When I met him he was in pilot training in the USAF and I wasn’t at all familiar with anyone in the military so my life was going to change drastically, but I’ve loved every bit of it.
This song was just so perfect for us at that time. Somehow over the years I forgot about this song until recently. Loving it again.
Beautiful story....🥰
Pilot wives, always finding new and creative ways to bring up their partner is a pilot lol.
@@PeterKato83 And then said pilot gets deployed....lol.
@@Thomas116-m2n Then Marine finds lonely wife, another score for the Corps!!!
When women used to say yes. All I get is short shrift.
The lyrics and voice of Elton is just beautiful, but that harmonica playing from Stevie....that's that SAUCE!
Decades of amazing music. What a great time to grow up- the 70s and 80s. Elton is a legend. Going to his farewell tour tomorrow night!
We saw him March 30th in St Louis Mo. He was absolutely phenomenal!
I'm jealous!! Was it phenomenal?
I saw him when I was 16 years old in Nashville. My first concert. Saw him many many times after that. I thought Elton and Bernie were songwriting geniuses than and still do.
I went to his so called "farewell tour" too - in 1984😂
Sim Lynn essa música é muito linda apesar de eu ser dá Amazônia
One of my all time favourite songs. Was never a fan in my younger years but what a song and I now realise how talented Elton is
"Time on my hands" that part of the song, gives me goosebumps every time.
TH-cam's great, I went from Slipknot to My Chemical Romance to Elton John and loved every song along the way. Music is magical and life's too short to not branch out into tons of genres. 🌈
😂 'chemical romance'❤
This is one of those songs that you can't help singing along with.
JW Romig
I will never get tired of hearing this song. The talent it takes to create a song like this is incredible
Here i am, listening to this almost 35 years later, and loving it just as much as i would then. I wonder how many hits of these modern artists people will listen to in 35 years....
Nah youre just old as fuck
I am 18 for fucks sake.
35 years from now, people will love a few of today's artists just as much as you love Elton's music now. In the same way people loved artists from 70 years ago. It all comes full circle, guaranteed. Just give it time. Such is life.
I think i will just keep listening to this instead
+Filip Orvik The way you worded it made you sound at least twice that age tho xD
¡¡¡Muchísimas Felicidades, Elton!!! 🎉🎉🎤🎤🎹🎹🎶🎶¡¡¡Gracias por tanta música maravillosa!!! Desde Argentina!
This is a timeless masterpiece! Has Elton ever done a bad song -no period. Cause he’s a legend. That catchy melody and Stevies harmonica. What a tune 🎶🎶🎶 love Elton 💕
I think we are always in a state of remembering our youth and being overwhelmed with happiness from the memories.

This man is a time machine... Every generation he continues to produce amazing, everlasting hits...Neither time or space confines his amazing talents..
Ausome!!!!
Maybe they should call him the time machine man instead of the rocketman
I have admired Elton John throughout the whole of his career and loved every song he has played and sung especially this song and will have this played when I leave this earth .
Best harmonica solo ever, courtesy of Stevie Wonder
Música linda. Feita para existir por séculos
It ain´t blues without the harp.
Dude no. Blues traveler lead singer is the literal king of the harmonica. He wears like 30 of them when he plays. He IS the harmonica. Stevie wonder is the 2nd best in the world hes also a legend
@@smitch250 isn't she lovely by Stevie is the best harmonica solo. Drake doing it wrong also
@@315cirizarry Finish Line solo it's also too good
I'm 38 years old, and I am just now discovering my love of Elton John
Congrats
Super hope u av Goodbye Yellow Brick Road 👍👍👍👍
The love will continue to grow. What an amazing talent 👌
It's never too late!
Perfect
Don't wish it away
Don't look at it like it's forever
Between you and me I could honestly say
That things can only get better
And while I'm away
Dust out the demons inside
And it won't be long before you and me run
To the place in our hearts where we hide
And I guess that's why they call it the blues
Time on my hands could be time spent with you
Laughing like children, living like lovers
Rolling like thunder under the covers
And I guess that's why they call it the blues
Just stare into space
Picture my face in your hands
Live for each second without hesitation
And never forget I'm your man
Wait on me girl
Cry in the night if it helps
But more than ever I simply love you
More than I love life itself
Gracias. Te amo.

Thanks for the lyrics, Meg........

Stevie Wonder on that harmonica 💗
+Luis Naranjo of course, because it´s Stevie !!!
+princessfam Ty Did Not Kno ! :0
Oh wow I had no idea that was Stevie!!! I actually had to look that one up to see if it was true and it is!! Thank you!! 🤗
+Luis Naranjo Absolutely!
+operagirl81 My pleasure! I love Stevie...an appearing on a song with Elton John...pure brilliance!
There’s a reason why the queen knighted this man
So true.
Gosh damn what a song. What a freakin song. Good lord it speaks to me so loud, deafening
Same!
I have an older brother named Daniel and even though he's still alive, I cry everytime I hear the song. We don't live in the same country. When I hear the part" Oh I miss Daniel, I miss him so much" it really hits hard
call him then! what ya waiting for?
This song brings back my best teen memories and totally feels good to hear it..
One of the greatest musicians
See
Yes it does
I was 9 and used to hear this on the radio when my Dad had the Station on WCBS Oldies
For real...I love this song
"Time on my hands could be time spent with you." This part always gets to me :-(
+Ashley Nicole Nordyke same. but everytime I play the song "running for you" kip moore.....my baby calls me. everytime.
***** Just keep holding on...love always wins at the end.
Solomon Modisha
+Ashley Nicole Nordyke I just got done crying ... wow
A genuine hero you are!
I'm here again because this song randomly pops into my head and I start singing along to the lyrics. Sir Elton John will always be a legend in my eyes, ears and heart.
Literally the same way I come back to this song about monthly
Lol Family Guy bought me here 😂😂😂
Some of the lyrics have been in my head on a daily basis for years now. I only wish I'd found them sooner. "Don't wish it away." Hindsight IS 20/20.
Elton has a powerful voice and it's on display here.
fuckin hell what a song, can it get any better than that. people now days don't appreciate what artists were xxx
I absolutely fuckin love elton and i am 13. My mates do aswell
There's hope for humanity
Ahhh dont include, I really appreciate xxx cus I love sex and porn :v
I Love Oldschool stuff what??
Your music playlist starts off with Usher ft. Juicy J - go away.
I imagine it will only be fitting to build a huge statue in this mans image and honour when he passes away. One of a kind.
I wish to not come across as cheesy, but why not now? We do these things posthumously too often. By the way, I think Elton John is a legend!
In Watford...
Will that statue be bald?...Or shall we carry on the lie?
Justaperson The song is a classic my friend
Remembering loved ones that passed. This song always makes me cry
Same here
Same 😢
Me too.
Ditto 🌹
The true reason its called to blues is because anyone who has ever loved can relate to the words of this genius. It truly is better to have loved and lost but its never better to except a broken heart and not do anything. Elton is truly a good man for writing this and someone saved my life tonight
Elton's a genius on piano. No question.
“Wait on me girl. Cry in the night if it helps.”
QUERO ASSISTIR O FILME DESTA MUSICA ; AMIGOS DE PEDRO DE 1992 . MAS NÃO ACHO. PODEM AJUDAR?
He doesn't write any of his lyrics.
This song is timeless. I am crazy about it.
Mimi S i think Elton will be remembered 200 years from now, as we listen to Mozart, John's songs have that quality which lends itself to longevity.
Elton John, demais adoro
È stupenda!!!
Timeless is absolutely correct.
For mine, this is Elton John's best song.......and that's saying something, as we know his catalogue is simply phenomenal!
Truly touching. Bless you.
Still remember this song being on the radio in 1983 --- great memories of my 80's youth!
Not to mention, it was on MTV
It's a great song for heartache and love gone wrong. I especially like the backing vocal come n on the "rolling like thunder" part. Magical music.
Who is listening to this legend? vocals are out of this world, timeless masterpiece ❤.
I used to rock my babies to sleep singing this song. They are 16 and 13, and still absolutely love this song. One of my all-time favorites!
I'm singing and rocking my 6m old son to it now
@@nikkibb1998 Damn that's crazy!
My 6 week old starts to get drowsy within seconds of it coming on. I used to play it when I was pregnant with him x
Certainly one of Elton's most underrated songs.
GildaLee27 and one of the best! 🤦♀️
His best imo
It’s the one song he says he could play multiple times a day and not get bored with it.
Been listening to the song for a while but listened to the lyrics intently for the first time yesterday and my life is forever changed
This is the most silliest comment on this thread!
woke up with this song in my head, hadn't heard it in years
listen to it rn. years is too long for Elton.
Just forgot about it, have close to a dozen elton songs on my ipod but somehow it slipped through the cracks, glad I rediscovered it
I guess that's why they call it the blues
so did I today
Me today lol
Mein Sohn spielte dieses Lied bei seiner musikalischen Abschlussprüfung für mich, der dieses Lied so liebt. Danke elton für das Lied! ❤❤❤
I’ve been listening to this song since I was four and almost thirteen years later this song still tears me up. I can listen to every single live rendition of this and not tear up and I listen to the original version and it tears me up.
Elton John gave me a childhood.
@@zacharyschafer3780 Me too, I wish I can be 9 again

I had forgotten just how much I love this song. Beautiful.
A true Bernie lyric masterpiece......Elton's deeper register sings it perfect......One of there best.....
In my own opinion Sir Elton John is one of the greatest performers ever ... fullstop.
