Thank you everyone for watching this video and for all of the kind comments and constructive advice. I just want to address one concern... the music in the background. As many people have suggested to me, this video would be better than it is if the music were either quieter, or gone entirely. I actually agree. This video would be a stronger production if the music were quieter (or completely gone) in several spots. This was a very early attempt of mine to create an arranging tutorial. I had just purchased my first "real" camera. All in all I think the video is a good effort... but my recent productions are WAY more polished. And the music is quieter in the intro and conclusion. AND the middle of the videos are usually music-free. Unfortunately, there is not good way for me to redo the audio for this video.
If you were about to leave a comment suggesting that I turn down that background music. I've heard it loud and clear.... almost as loud as that darn music in the background!

Hey mate. I very useful trick mixing engineers use for music/dialogue is to have a gate in the music channel and have the side chain input from that gate coming from your vox channel. That way whenever you speak the gate ducks out the music. It’s a pretty elegant way of doing it and that means you don’t have to spend hrs doing volume automation.

I am a choir composer and I always like the sound of big band, film score-like sounds. I have been struggling how to write a good harmony and this video helps a lot. I never learned any music theory class formally, but your explanation is clear and understandable, especially when you include some examples. Thank you. Could've found you sooner

Pretty much everywhere we can find people talking about voicings, drops, spreads, ranges.. But this is the first time I get to see somone talking about orchestration, how to distribute the notes within the horns, in a idiomatic manner. These are some real powerful tools. Tks very much!!!

The KISS method of orchestration. (Keep It Simple Stupid). I don't always write the harmony with this method... but this method always sounds great!

ONLY WHEN ITS PERFECT….. WOULD I HIRE SESSION MUSICIANS AT A TOP KNOTCH STUDIO TO RE-RECORD IT …
      ”LIVE”!!!!!!!….
sure some vocal overdubs in post?
PROPERLY,…WITH PROFESSIONALS ALONG WITH A TRUSTED MASTERING ENGINEER.
IF ALL GOES ACCORDING TO MY DREAM…. THIS ALBUM WILL
( not only be the soundtrack of my life)
      BUT ALSO
      THE SOUNDTRACK OF A
45 minute ANIMATED STORY IM WRITING…. FOR THE YOUNG KIDS, AND TEENAGERS ….. WHO MUST LEARN TO WORK “ TOGETHER “ ….

  • @claytonr.young-music912
    @claytonr.young-music912 2 ปีที่แล้ว

The idea of objectionable parallels is to create rich counterpoint with a small number of real parts. The idea is that objectionable parallels are a waste of your voices. This is absolutely true on an organ, the instrument of choice for working out vocal harmonies. If you only have 2 or 3 horns, you might want to try this even in a jazz context for a fuller sound. When you have a big band, however, it wouldn't make much sense to have four real parts that form a complete harmony and then distribute them out to the players. Rather, big band scoring typically relies on counterpoint between opposing groups, which do not have much if any contrapuntal interest inside of them; the interest comes from the groups' interaction, and the rhythm section makes sure it keeps swinging, which forgives more sins than you might imagine.

@@PandemoniumBigBand There is a topic I'm interested in, for my own selfish reasons. That is, your thoughts on how many instruments to use at one time, in various circumstances. As a young arranger, I often wrote more parts than necessary, especially when transcribing something from tape, only to find that when I saw the band live, there were fewer instruments in use.

Thank you! That copying and pasting for the bones and sax will help me tremendously! I'm just a rock guitar hobbyist but I have a short bluesy section I want to culminate in this style, morphing from a New Orleans thing. I barely know the diatonic modes so this type of harmonising is a bit daunting and possibly overkill for just wanting a brief passage to sound a bit like Family Guy or whatever. My next step is to just download a bunch of MIDI files and study what I like the sound of. Anyway, Cheers.

Good luck to you! Making a brief passage sound like Family Guy is a huge project! Walter Murphy uses a huge studio orchestra for that show.

@@PandemoniumBigBand Thanks! It's definitely turned out to be an undertaking. Family Guy was a flippant reference and too lofty a goal, anything that sounds remotely like a swing band will be fine for my purposes. Just watched your latest video on harmonising the inbetween chord notes and it helps a lot! There's a good thread on reddit about it too, and also an article on 'helpingyouharmonise' website about what do so with the blues notes (it didn't occur to me that the chord might be changing to a IV7 earlier than expected to account for my phrase).
I'm still scratching my head over some chromatic notes and also to what extent is it acceptable/unacceptable to repeat notes.
Anyway, I can see why this stuff is left to the professionals like yourself, cheers for the guidance!

These tutorials for big band writing are fantastic! What "secrets" might you share for tutti voicing of seven horns as in a little big band(A,T,B -2 trp. - 2 trbn.)? Thanks for all your work in passing on your expertise!

My newest video “tessitura”, is a good start to explaining how I tackle smaller section orchestration. The most important thing is to be aware of your instrument ranges AND how the instruments behave in various partials.

The music in the background is so good during the harmonizing of the trumpets that I find it hard to concentrate.

Then I encourage you to jam out instead!... On my earlier lessons, the music is a bit too loud. Hopefully I've gotten better at this over the past few months.

Thank you for checking it out! The only samples you're hearing is that upright bass. All of the brass/woodwinds were recorded remotely. I actually played the trumpet parts myself!
