Thank you everyone for watching this video and for all of the kind comments and constructive advice. I just want to address one concern... the music in the background. As many people have suggested to me, this video would be better than it is if the music were either quieter, or gone entirely. I actually agree. This video would be a stronger production if the music were quieter (or completely gone) in several spots. This was a very early attempt of mine to create an arranging tutorial. I had just purchased my first "real" camera. All in all I think the video is a good effort... but my recent productions are WAY more polished. And the music is quieter in the intro and conclusion. AND the middle of the videos are usually music-free. Unfortunately, there is not good way for me to redo the audio for this video.
If you were about to leave a comment suggesting that I turn down that background music. I've heard it loud and clear.... almost as loud as that darn music in the background!

Hey mate. I very useful trick mixing engineers use for music/dialogue is to have a gate in the music channel and have the side chain input from that gate coming from your vox channel. That way whenever you speak the gate ducks out the music. It’s a pretty elegant way of doing it and that means you don’t have to spend hrs doing volume automation.

Pretty much everywhere we can find people talking about voicings, drops, spreads, ranges.. But this is the first time I get to see somone talking about orchestration, how to distribute the notes within the horns, in a idiomatic manner. These are some real powerful tools. Tks very much!!!

I WANT TO THANK YOU MR. DEUTSCH !
FINDING YOUR CHANNEL IS LIKE THE UNIVERSE IS GETTING BEHIND ME.
AS A SELF TAUGHT JAZZ COMPOSER, IM FINALLY AFTER 45 YEARS WORKING ON MY DEBUT ALBUM
( due out possibly Christmas …..? There’s still a ton of arranging and rewriting and rehearsing to do yet…. maybe I should say …. next spring? )…lol 👀
I INSIST THAT IT ALL BE ANALOG, MASTERED FROM TAPE. ( still buying second hand, old school board and outboard gear as we speak)
      ( Yes……. I’m a bit nuts. But….. I hate thinking I have to be ONLINE …. Just to record music.🥵
also….. the entire old school process
“feels and sounds” warmer and…… hey….
HOME MADE CAKE…. JUST TASTE BETTER!!!! Lol)
IM HOPING TO MIX EVERYTHING IN MY HOME STUDIO….. PLAYING ALLTHE PARTS MYSELF…….
      ( yeah I’m nuts )…lol
ONLY WHEN ITS PERFECT….. WOULD I HIRE SESSION MUSICIANS AT A TOP KNOTCH STUDIO TO RE-RECORD IT …
      ”LIVE”!!!!!!!….
sure some vocal overdubs in post?
PROPERLY,…WITH PROFESSIONALS ALONG WITH A TRUSTED MASTERING ENGINEER.
IF ALL GOES ACCORDING TO MY DREAM…. THIS ALBUM WILL
( not only be the soundtrack of my life)
      BUT ALSO
      THE SOUNDTRACK OF A
45 minute ANIMATED STORY IM WRITING…. FOR THE YOUNG KIDS, AND TEENAGERS ….. WHO MUST LEARN TO WORK “ TOGETHER “ ….
NOT GOING THROUGH LIFE AS JUST A SOLOIST……
BUT BECOMING PART OF A BIGGER PICTURE IN HARMONY……..
      BY WAITING FOR “THEIR MOMENT”
TO ADD TO THE MELODY OR NARRATIVE ……..
IN THE ONGOING ENSEMBLE CALLED “ LIFE!”
      I TAKES PLACE IN A FANTASY WORLD…..
IF TOLD RIGHT….. AND UTILIZES PEAK CGI, VOICEOVER ACTORS, AND PEAK CINEMATIC NUANCES…..
IT SHOULD LEAVE A LASTING POSITIVE EMPACT …… I HOPE 👀.lol
( I WAS SIDETRACKED FROM MY TRUE CALLING AT 13…. AND BELIEVE IT OR NOT….. I JUST GAINED MY TRUE NATURAL FOOTING 4 YEARS AGO
TO FINALLY ARRANGE THESE GOD GIVEN CHORDS AND VERSES THAT HAVE BEEN SILENCED FOR OVER 50 YEARS!! ( long story 🕯)
AN AVERAGE SONG TAKES EASILY OVER A YEAR TO PERFECT
      ( if I’m lucky )
      ………….. each and EVERY
NOTE AND LYRIC IN WRITTEN AND REWRITTEN
BORN OUT OF; NOT JUST DEDUCTION, REDUCTION, AND ELIMINATION…. BUT… A STRONG CONVICTION THAT EVERYONE SONGS , FILMS, AND OTHER ART FORMS…

THIS IS MY FIRST RODEO AND IM SURE IL GET THROWN OFF THE BULL…
( it’s sure not because of sales, fame, or fortune that this life goal exists..) lol
      MAYBE I WAS BORN UNDER A “LUSCIOUS” STAR… I DON’T KNOW.. lol
BUT BEAUTIFUL HARMONIES … SLIGHTLY OFF THE BEATEN PATH, AND MATCHING LYRICS FROM THE SOUL…
ARE MY ONLY GOAL IN EXECUTING THIS UNDERTAKING….
      OF COURSE I SUBSCRIBED SIR!!
THANK YOU AGAIN FOR SHARING YOUR IMPECCABLE COMPOSITIONS WITH THE WORLD!!!
LIKE YOU………. THIS PROJECT IS DRIVEN ONLY AS A LABOR OF LOVE!
IVE LIVED 67 1/2 YEARS WITH SO FAR ….. NOTHING TO ACTUALLY SHOW FOR IT OR SHARE…….EXCEPT MY HONESTY AND DIGNITY.
LOVE AND LIGHT ARE HERE TO SPREAD…….
USING OUR GIFTS …. MAYBE WE CAN INSPIRE JUST ONE PERSON ?
I ADMIT…. ITS SCARY AND WAY OVER MY PAY GRADE…… IM SEMI RETIRED WITH A MODEST ONE MAN BUSINESS THAT PAYS THE BILLS..
SOOOOO, THIS WILL BE FINANCED….. ONE DAY AT A TIME….. no rush 👀lol
      BUT ….. THANKS TO YOU…… YOU’VE PROVIDED…. A LADDER….
      …… TO GET …. A LITTLE
      MORE….. ON TOP OF IT
      TECHNICALLY AND MORALLY SPEAKING.

Check "reinput pitches" in sibelius if You do it the same way as in video. Great tutorial!!!

Super tutorial and please don't even think about polishing these videos. I love your intimate, personal way of talking to us. Too many good videos are spoiled by fancy backdrops, high production values and too many adverts. Watching you is like talking to my personal tutor. Love it!

These tutorials for big band writing are fantastic! What "secrets" might you share for tutti voicing of seven horns as in a little big band(A,T,B -2 trp. - 2 trbn.)? Thanks for all your work in passing on your expertise!

My newest video “tessitura”, is a good start to explaining how I tackle smaller section orchestration. The most important thing is to be aware of your instrument ranges AND how the instruments behave in various partials.

Thanks for sharing this, I found it super useful and I'm wondering what's the sample library you are using in your Sibelius? It sounds great.

That was the clearest exposition on getting a classic big band sound I have heard yet. I have subscribed. I have a request if it's not too much. Could you talk about how to give parts to different sections of the band to make an actual chart out of a melody if that makes sense.

Thank you so much for the feedback! I am not sure exactly what you are asking about. Maybe you can reword your question... I think there is a good, juicy topic in there.

@@PandemoniumBigBand here is a better phrasing. What are the parts of a prototypical big band chart. It seems there are so many elements to a chart that are unique to the genre that don't occur in a pop song. I guess the question is about how form in big band chart differs from typical so g form
So how do you lay out and plan a typical chart? Thank you

5:27 I wish I could convince my classically trained music theory professor that jazz is beautiful too... If I showed him this awesome video he would probably fail me and kick me out of his class lol

I’m sure he wouldn’t. Different music is orchestrated in different ways.

Here's a suggestion: I think you should start a Patreon page and give an insight into your own creative process, and how you approach these topics I spoke before, plus also some analysis of some of the big band fundamental writters you think must be looked at. Anyways, keep up the amazing work!!

That's a good tip. I have been hesitant to start a Patreon page, but I'll definitely give it a second thought.

Thank you! That copying and pasting for the bones and sax will help me tremendously! I'm just a rock guitar hobbyist but I have a short bluesy section I want to culminate in this style, morphing from a New Orleans thing. I barely know the diatonic modes so this type of harmonising is a bit daunting and possibly overkill for just wanting a brief passage to sound a bit like Family Guy or whatever. My next step is to just download a bunch of MIDI files and study what I like the sound of. Anyway, Cheers.

Good luck to you! Making a brief passage sound like Family Guy is a huge project! Walter Murphy uses a huge studio orchestra for that show.

@@PandemoniumBigBand Thanks! It's definitely turned out to be an undertaking. Family Guy was a flippant reference and too lofty a goal, anything that sounds remotely like a swing band will be fine for my purposes. Just watched your latest video on harmonising the inbetween chord notes and it helps a lot! There's a good thread on reddit about it too, and also an article on 'helpingyouharmonise' website about what do so with the blues notes (it didn't occur to me that the chord might be changing to a IV7 earlier than expected to account for my phrase).
I'm still scratching my head over some chromatic notes and also to what extent is it acceptable/unacceptable to repeat notes.
Anyway, I can see why this stuff is left to the professionals like yourself, cheers for the guidance!
