Can I attempt to do it myself? I have a peg reamer and I want to change the e button on my violin? Do you recommend?

Hi I am trying to fix my own violin because the repair fee is way too high for my budget. So you mean I can just smack the new endpin in the hole without any glue in it or do I still need to use hide glue??

An endpin is essentially a V to a V joint. Its tapered and shouldn't need to be glued. The reamer I used in the video matches the taper of the endpin I installed. I just needed to make the hole larger for the pin to fit. For your violin, the question is going to be what is the taper of the original hole and what is the taper of the replacement endpin. Hopefully they match, otherwise you will need to either ream the violin's end block or cut the endpin to match. Either way, its best to have a tech do the job. If your goal is to save money I can't in good conscious recommend buying tools and doing the job yourself. There are very cheap reamers out there that you could buy but the cutting quality won't be there. I don't know what your local tech is quoting you but I would guess its less than purchasing the right tools, doing the job, it isn't right, and then having to go to a tech anyway but now they're repairing additional damage. I wish I had a better answer for you but without seeing the instrument, I'd guess that having a tech do the job is the lesser of two evils than doing it yourself and potentially paying more if something went wrong.
      Good luck,
      DBN
