    Excellent Masterclass. Thank you. After I sold my Peresson to care for my wife, after her passing, and not having much money, I purchased a half dozen Chinese instruments on ebay without hearing, but judging by the consistent narrow grain and quality of finish.
    Not being a luthier I used the business card and pencil to get the post and the bass bar equidistant to the f-holes. Thanks to your expertise I can now experiment with adjusting the length of the post and move toward the bridge for brightness, and away for greater undertone.

    You make an excellent point about making adjustments as you evaluate violins for purchase- not always possible in every violin shop you go to. How many violins have I put aside that may have actually been perfect if the sound post was adjusted a tad. I hear that "boxy", "bland" G and the violin gets put to the side right away. I don't know what happened to the video- it ended before I could hear some of the sound variations you could achieve by moving the sound post. LOL you should also include a caveat that David won't need to saw a section of your violin away to move your sound post should you bring it in for an adjustment. Great video.

    I definitely need to check out this shop the next time I’m in Philly! Also, I’d do well to get a teacher, I’m self-teaching

    Thanks for the info, and I hope you have a link for the video when you try different sound poster positions for sound difference (@8'20") since I would like to watch if but can not find it. Also hope to learn more about the bridge (thickness, foot, etc.) and how it impacts the sound if possible. Thanks.

    it does not matter where you think the sound post should be putting it behand the right feet of the violin however the violin will move the sound post to where the sound post should be it actually spins around depending on how you play

    Cool. Just mess around with the stick inside the violin and it can sound like a Strad.

    u can make any number of adjustments and the violin wont magically turn into a strad. u can possibly make the violin sound the best it can by these adjustments. but realistically very difficult to make out. same with strings too.

    Super Erklärung des „soundposts“.
    Leider ist die Entfernung von Stuttgart nach Philadelphia so groß … What a pitty!

    Hmm?...
    One would think, you would use an acustic electronic tuner, too get it perfect, during the ajustment process... 🤔
    However, I'm a drummer, so what do I know?... 🙄

    Bridge. You missed the bridge, that makes a lot of difference.
    No1. is where the sound post is placed.
    No2. Bridge position and size, thickness from the base to the top.
    No3. Strings. Good quality strings will produce great sound.
    No4. Player. An expert can bring the best sounds from a cheap $10 violin.
    Of course the most important factor is the violin wood, but even with the best wood if it is made in china throw it away.
    Wish I had a shop like this in my country in my city, what we get here is cheap chinese stuff I have wasted lot of money buying violins.

    • @simon0yeung
      @simon0yeung ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Being made in China is not the definitive factor though. There are great and rubbish violins in every country

    This is wierd. ackording 2:03 the sound comes out the f-holes. This is nonsense. The sound is coming from the violin vibrating and for this to be able to happen there need to be holes like the f-holes. I find it a bit wierd that this channel spreads this info falsely?
    / Just your random luthier

    • @don-music
      @don-music 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That means the same thing. The sound projects out of the f holes from the wood vibrating and most of the resonating happens inside which is why the sound comes out of the f holes. You are a random Luthier, but you called him out on something you both said but summarized with slightly different wording. His wording is the most accurate high level summary though.

    Did you say "sound is objective" and then go on to describe it as something that is subjective?
    I think most people would say that sound is SUBjective, not objective. Did I mis-hesr you?
