You were commenting on the system of loading and unloading. The way they do it keeps the ferry as level in the water as possible. Glad you got to get to Anacortes etc.. Keep up the good work.

When you live here you kind of forget/take advantage of what you have in your own backyard. I’ve been on the ferry multiple times, it’s one of my favorite things. My husband had never been 😱 So I fixed that last summer. I can’t wait until I take him the the San Juan’s. Happy Trucking :) Stay safe.

Also at the end of the video you said “this job never ends”. I can totally relate. You also have to remember that we are human and even tho we love our OTR it will burn us out. The term being in the seat to long is so very true. When you start feeling that way, it may be time to get out of the seat. Not just a 36hr reset but vacation time or an extended period of time off. To get out of the seat and reset yourself. We are after all only human.

Dad grew up on the neighboring Lopez Island. It’s always fun to hear others excitement about the Pacific Northwest. If you found it beautiful in the winter, you will be blown away in the late spring and summer.
That whole notion of travel is why I joined the Air Force I got to see so many different places around this country and around the world, so I have to say that I totally agree with your philosophy
Just to clarify for those who might not know.
Loading an unloading a Ferry is more technical then what Shelby said.
A balance must be achieved weight wise left to right, bow to stern.
If everyone drove off the left side of the boat, the boat would flip over to the right side and sink!

Don't forget to breath especially if and when you are tired or frustrated. I think you hit the nail on the head when you said you get paid to see the all the places that are on and in your trip. Enjoy your life along the way.
I have taken that ferry a few times, one of the coolest things ever. And this from a guy who rode a ferry everyday to Ford Island when I was stationed in Pearl Harbor, back in the late 70's, early 80's. Now there is a floating bridge!

Up until COVID I got to travel for my job about 80 to 90% of my time. After 25 years I have seen a lot of the world and almost all of the US, from the big cities to the smaller towns. I’ve flown over 3 million miles and thousands of flights, spent thousands of nights in hotels, taken night trains in Europe and Asia, took boats from island to island in the Caribbean and South America, and driven a bunch too. People ask me if I got tired of traveling and not being home? My answer has always been no. Truth is that I miss it right now. I’ve been home for almost 10 months and boy am I waiting to get back on the road. Seeing something new and meeting people has always been fun. As long as you are someone who can roll with the punches and accept that a life of travel will certainly not go as planned, but instead enjoy all the diversions and turn them into opportunities, you can have an amazing life. It’s a big world and I want to see it all!

Loved these two videos about the ferry ⛴ experience! It's so beautiful out on the water (but very chilly). I absolutely loved the camera work and beauty shots - thanks so much - it feeds my starving outdoor soul that is stuck in suburbia. I didn't know much about ferries until I lived on the coast of Maine. Portland Harbor has a mail boat you can ride as a passenger around the chain of islands, and you can hop off and on if you want to do a day trip and explore. Lots of summer homes on the islands as well. There are also ferries further up the coast that go to a couple islands further out, and there is a high-speed hydrofoil ferry to Nova Scotia that takes just under 4 hrs for the transit.
One interesting tidbit is that you don't need to have registered vehicles on the islands of Maine. There are rolling heaps that'll be sitting by the docks to drive tourists to lodgings, pick up supplies, etc. that are missing chunks of bodyparts, bumpers, or lights, and it's perfectly ok. A bit freaky if you don't know about it beforehand! You get the smirk and eye roll from islanders if you're a newbie who politely points out a missing part... 😆

They work all the islands in New England too.
Just put the bow on the beachhead and drive off your cargo, or deliver supplies. Very cool job.
After something like 9 months living in a COVID restricted/locked down world, when opportunity presents itself take it, if 2020 is anything to go by, things can change really fast unexpectedly so take those opportunities when you can folks. Your comment about getting a paid mini vacation resonated with me. My first long hall trip went from Saskatoon SK down to Southern Mississippi, up to NJ via Taladaga, spent a day in New York city. Then back to SASK via Chicago. Crazy weather. Hot & humid in the south. Cold & windy in NY Loved it!

Hey. That's the best advice u gave. I've been out here nearly 10 years otr in Canada and USA and I've done soooo much. Toured Seattle, took a boat to Vancouver Island, went to AK and HI both by plane and I love visiting the state capitol buildings and going on the tours.

Shelby, watching your videos have completely inspired me to go get my CDL. Ive always wanted to get a CDL but now I am actually doing it. Enrolled in SAGE trucking school in Montana a week ago! Very good video. Driving on to the ferry kind of looks like driving into one of the tunnels getting across the Chesapeake bay tunnels and bridge. I agree driving to a lot of places is a very positive experience. Your videos are awesome!!

There are some wonderful parks on that island, and those little shops at the ferry landing are definitely worth checking out when open (especially the wine shop).
Lived in Washington my entire life and been a trucker here for 15+, and while I tend to forget how lucky I am to live around the water and mountains, taking a truck on a ferry NEVER gets old. Made me smile seeing you so thrilled to be doing that. Love the channel, and welcome to the Pacific Northwest. You're going to love driving here!

They load, and offload to keep the weight of the ferry even in the water. Also I work from FedEx Express out on the ramp offloading, and loading aircraft. Everyone should have the opportunity to do what they love. Im 23, and will probably stick with FedEx for many years to come as it's a good company to work for

Shelby, the reason that they alternate the vehicles on/off the ferries sometimes is bc of weight distribution. Especially when Big Trucks are involved
One thing I miss from my OTR time is the places 'I got paid to see'. One of my biggest clients for many years was a company in MA that made store fixtures and they used to sell to the National Park Service for their gift shops and welcome centers, so through them I got to visit a whole bunch of places I probably never would have on my own. For example, I have been to a bunch of the Revolutionary War and Civil War parks on the east coast, I've been to Fort Pickens off of Pensacola (a place I never even knew existed) and the 2 best places I got to visit because of them were Mount Rushmore and The Grand Canyon. I also went to Vegas a whole lot when I was hauling trade shows. Not to mention all the times I got to visit family and friends in other parts of the country without having to take a vacation and pay for the travel. I do miss traveling the country and especially driving out west where it's so beautiful, but I'm happy being home every night after being OTR for nearly 20 years. Plus, I don't think I want to be OTR with an ELD. I was never a log book cheater but a little flexibility goes a long way when you're out there, potentially in unfamiliar places, in need of services and a safe parking spot. Having that box on the dash telling you to park or else is not how I would want to live on the road.
Anyway, I love your videos, Shelby! You, BKM and Dakota, keep up the great work!

The last job I had before retiring was a traveling job. Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, etc. I rarely rented a car. Instead, I would walk the neighborhoods around the hotel. Yes to the experience! Great job, Shelby! Enjoy your downtime even if it means doing "businessy" stuff. :)
Been on that ferry ride several times from Friday harbor to Anacortes as a local truck driver. Always get out and enjoy the scenery whenever you can! Always enjoy your content! Thanks for sharing, from one Shelby to another Shelby!

I do the same thing to be tourist, asking for trips out of normal routine. Sometimes I see football or hockey in different cities, see concerts, and plan resets to rent a car and explore. Like you say, you might not go back again, so see all you can instead of sitting in a truckstop watching other people do it on youtube lol. We only get one life to live, unless you a buddhist, and then you might come back as a dog who rides in a truck every day.

Of the two trucking jobs that I've had out here on the road, currently still in my second job, I've seen more places than if I would have if by traveling for fun! I still have not done all 48 states though and may never will. So Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Vermont and New Hampshire are the only ones that I have not made it to, yet! Although I've only driven around New York City. This past trip I loaded in Chesapeake, Virginia. I pull a spread axle 48ft flatbed. PVC pipe(NAPCO, North American Pipe Company) is my companies biggest client. But anything that can be loaded on a flatbed for a backhaul! Sometimes I deadhead 1100 miles! But I get paid empty or loaded. I run on average of about 135,000 miles per year.
I drove semi for 35 years hauling big boats in the northwest... Many times I took my semi on the ferries with a boat on my semi. Was kind of funny, a truck on a boat hauling a boat. Very beautiful area.

I love Friday Harbor / San Juan Island. Oprah owns a house on Orcas Island, which is the Island just to the north east of San Juan. Drove right through the town I live in (Mount Vernon).

The best part of the decision you made is that you get to stand outside of the truck with a hand warmer made of roasted beans and water and freight is still moving even though you're not toiling away. Any time you can get out of the truck is good for your mental health and your spine. You can walk around the boat and not be staring down a road. The downside is that your logbook may take a beating since you're technically not allowed to log sleeper birth in the truck when the boat is moving.
Here's a tip: IF you want to do island runs I know some people who specialize in the fishing industry. I got paid to spend hotel nights at the docks waiting for fishing boats in Tofino. I think you will need a Visa to work in Canada but you get to Live in Vancouver!
"We're just travelling and we get paid to travel." As you get older you're also going to get paid even when you don't want to be just travelling and trust me the novelty and mystique does wear off. You're getting paid to service a community who needs you; whether that works for you or not is a bonus. I eventually wanted the world to stop scrolling past me and started a tech company and now work in an office. I get to walk my dog whenever I want, go to starbucks whenever I want, go for a walk whenever I want, sleep whenever I want, and work wherever I have power and wifi. Instead of being alone in a cab I'm meeting dozens of new customers every day.
Loved this video Shelby. BKM always does a great job with the filming !!!! I did see your part 1 video Shelby and your filming was good, but your right BKM has that magic touch with the camera. I could tell you were a little excited about this adventure, but you have a right to be !! this doesn't happen every day for you and to get to capture that adventure on film is priceless and to actually share it with your followers is even more meaningful !!!!!!!!!!

The way they disembark they take the vehicles out of the way as you say at first, but the are more concerned with keeping the boat load level so they take the wings first then move towards the center

Where I live in the Philippines, the roll-on roll-offs are not as big, so weight and balance in loading are important. In rough weather, the smaller trucks are hog-tied to the deck. Imagine that.

Loved the video and seeing places near my old home. Anacortes, Skagit Flats, Mount Vernon. Shelby make sure you and BKM do that same run in the March April time frame. The Skagit Valley area does the Tulip Festival each Spring and the fields are rows and rows and rows of Tulips before they are harvested.
The larger ferries in Washington state carry about 300 vehicles .glad that you had a chance to experience some of island of Washington be safe out their
