    MY dad said that John Deere and International Harvester after WW2 took their war profits and used it to floorplan their dealerships... they built a great dealership network...My grandfather, dad and my uncles opened an BF Avery dealership in 1949 and with the acquisition of BFAvery by Minneapolis Moline became a MM dealer but they closed the dealership in mid to late 50,'s primarily because when they ordered a tractor they had to pay for it in 30 days. Whereas John Deere and IHC could hold a unit for 6 months before having to pay. So they could stock more units.. plus had time to make sales.. John Deere and IHC were building a loyal dedicated clientele of Customers... both with franchisees and end users

      It seems MM struggled from the 50s to the 70s when the brand was phased out. Moline made some good machines. So did Oliver. You are 100% correct that the other brands similar did not have the string dealership network to grow theirs sales.

    I love how AGCO talked about being proud of the fact that their business model was to buy the brands but keep the branding. It wasn't too long after that video was made that they got rid of the Allis and White brands. Now it's all mostly MF.

Then he switch to Massey Ferguson's the first two he bought was a MF35 and MF 65 then he had a 135, 165. a175, then a 255 , 265, 275 ,285 my favorite. Then he had a 461 and a 471. Today my older brother owns my dad's 471 and a brother in law owns my dad's old 255. Today I have a Massey Ferguson 3070 and a IMT 539 and a John Deere 5320 . The Massey 3070 is my favorite

      The IMT is very interesting. Is this model a three or four cylinder, based on the MF35 or 65 respectively? I remember my 1979 MF590 tractor’s Perkins engine having an inlet manifold [and probably many other parts] made by IMT. Later 600 series tractors had their UK-style automatic trailer hitches made by another licensee, Ursus of Poland. I’m almost certain that many components used in the 1970’s Coventry factory, on the last 100, the 200, 500 and 4200/4300 were actually made by these companies and their Pakistani and Indian licensees, Millat and TAFE respectively.

Almost every one was totally loyal to one brand. There was an all Ford farm, all J.I. Case farm, all Allis-Chalmers farm, all Massey farm, all IH farm. Two big grain farms were loyal as well. One was all John Deere and the other Oliver and Steiger. I sure wish I could go back in time and film at those farms. I love how they write history to suit their marketing scheme. Duetz sold off Duetz -Allis because they grossly overestimated the market in north America. Duetz bought Allis Chalmers then destroyed the product and dealer net work by ramming the underbuilt German tractor on the north American farmer. Destroyed the 3rd best selling line of tractors in America by disposing of the complete line. Destroyed the most popular conventional combine and forced an air cooled rotary into a market that didn't want it. Took the orange paint and threw it out forcing the line in duetz green, even threatening to paint the Gleaner slime green. Once they completely destroyed their market they dumped it off to Radcliff and investors. Agcos growth has been only by acquisitions not by gaining market share. They're an embarrassment to the name Allis Chalmers, and thankfully they quit using the Allis name.
    Thumbs up for the video,
    Thumbs down for the propaganda from Agco

      I remember our dealer during and after the deutz mess. Their entire parts lot was burnt up air cooled deutz Gleaners. Took them a while to convince the country to become silver again. Now there's a cat dealer in its place and they refuse to carry anything besides cat. You'll be hard pressed to find anything agco up here(unless it's pre deutz). Apparently people learned their lesson.
      Since you seem to know somethings on Allis, what ever happened to their tractors since deutz didn't buy them or West Allis, just Gleaner and Independence?
      And there was a few ugly green fire starters...

    • @RJ1999x
      @RJ1999x 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@J-1410 What happened to the Allis tractors? Deutz didn't buy the west Allis factory, or Harvey engine plant. They ran the line until the parts already made were depleted then stopped production. The engineering and drawings were hauled to the landfill, the molds were destroyed and the machines were taken out and shipped to mexico, so there was 0 chance the great Allis Chalmers tractor could be made again.
      Deutz plan was to destroy the Allis Chalmers legacy at all cost. They announced after the merger that the tractors and combines were still going to be made just rebadged deutz-allis, even printed a landhandler magazine to tell everyone it was business as usual, while they already had started destroying the line. At the time deutz stopped supplying the parts for Allis Chalmers was just running out the parts inventory and jacked the parts prices to discourage anyone from keeping an Allis Chalmers. The only credit I'll give Agco is when they took over they knew parts meant cash flow, so they lowered the prices on started restocking the parts chain again to keep the Allis Chalmers equipment running. I went through the Gleaner plant in Independence after Agco bought them, took a tour but seen no parts being made for the conventional combines, I asked the guy from Agco where those parts were manufactured his reply was we don't build anything to support conventional gleaners they need to buy a rotary. I left the plant and my next combine was a New Holland

      @@J-1410 To give you an idea of how badly the Germans over estimated their ability, at the time I worked for the the largest Allis Chalmers dealer east of the Mississippi, new and used Gleaners their peak was a 120 machines a year, 45 8000 series and 60 6000 series tractors per year. After Allis Chalmers closed the Gleaners saless dropped to 1 new and about 5 used machines, and in the whole run of the 9000 series tractors, the green and orange they sold 3 total. Thankfully the owner had bought out the CaseIH dealership before Deutz destroyed Allis Chalmers, keeping the dealership going.

    They destroyed the A.C. name brand when they bought it. Local A.C. dealer was shut down when he refused to take 8 tractors he did not want or could sale. AGRO Declared we are shipping you 8 100 +hp tractors and we want our money in 90 days. Some compete idiots decide his sales area need tractors that size. He knew he could never sale them and turn a profit so he said no. They shut him down and lost sales on everything. We went from Gleaner on almost every farm for 50 miles to zero in less than 5 years. When asked what tractors we had at trade show we told aggro JD because we sold all our A.C. tractors because of the crap support and lack of dealrships. We told them how badly they marketing screwed by destroying the dealer network trying to sell tractors that did not fit into what farmers in our area wanted.

      It’s very unfortunate what happens to Allis-Chalmers. Ultimately what destroyed Allis was the farm economy of the late 70’s and early 80’s. High 19% interest rates crippled sales. AC ag fell apart in 1979 Sperry-New Holland sold $1 billion in hay and forage tools where AC had $300 million in sales. AC was falling behind. Money ran out and Allis decided to sell its ag division. Allis-Chalmers built hundreds of products outside of farming. Deutz bout Allis ag. Yes Deutz really messed up dropping the orange paint. AGCO picked up the pieces and it corrected the corse. Allis-Chalmers remained its own company in 1990 and AGCO could not use the AC name. The AC tractor line was gone so AGCO had to use WHItE to build tractors. AC lost allot of market and it did not come back but AGCO was able to build new markets through new brands plus supply parts of the range of brands it owned. It’s a negative thing that AC is gone but AGCO grew into a much bigger company based on the foundation of AC.

    I wonder how AGCO was able to buy up all these company without there being any kind of push back from the governments, I know in the US alone if two competing companies wish to merge its a nightmare and a absolute headache to achieve it for fear of creating a monopoly

    • @bigtractorpower
      @bigtractorpower  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most of the brands acquired by AGCO were in bankruptcy or near shuttering. AGCO bought up short line brands to build a full line company. The government gets more involved if a company is taking up to much market share. For example in 1986 John Deere made a bid to Versatile for its 4wd line. The combined company’s would have had more than 50% market share and the bid was given to Ford because they were not in the 4wd tractor market. In 1999 when Fiat the owner of Ford New Holland acquired Case IH to form CNH they controlled New Holland hay tools , Case IH Hesston hay tools, New Holland Versatile 4wds and Case IH Steiger 4wds and New Holland Genesis tractors and Case IH Magnum tractors. In the CNH case one of each brand had to be spun off.

But the Lord had other things for me. so spent flying for and starting flight programs for a mission. But as the old saying goes," you can take the boy of the farm but can't take the farm out of the farm". This was the very best story of how many of these companies merged together, as i well remember most of these when they were first showing up on the farm market. **************for this presentation. Interesting video. I was growing up when all this started back in the day. What is interesting is looking at just AGCO, in general the only info easily found is simply the aquisitions of the bigger companies mostly starting when the actual AGCo name came to be.
    But there were SO MANY little companies, a lot of them fairly specialized, that were consolidated either by AGCo, or were picked up by other companies right before AGCo bought them that the list of ALL the companies under the AGCo nameplate is simply immense. I remember in the late 80's reading about companies that produced only one or two items, sometimes just cultivators or spring tooth drags etc getting aquired by Hesston, or New Idea, or White, etc. Then AGCo came by and bought up those companies.
    It is really hard to find a good list nowdays, a google search of any of the "AGCo brands" doesn;t really show their history very well, mostly just links to stuff about AGCo itself.
    I suppose that's a product of our modern global economy and merged up megacorps. But it is a shame in a way that all that "little guy" history is so hard to find. Sort of like how AGCo doesn't seem to like talking about how they own the Oliver nameplate, or MM. Those old companies get treated as irrelevant in today's market, and that's really too bad.
    But as the saying goes, nothing stays the same.

      AGCO was built on multiple brands but in 2006 they began to consolidate the brands. Same machinery but painted in “key” brand colors. AGCO has a cool history and great brands but by 2006 as the company was rapidly growing it changed course. AGCO’s primary competitors are John Deere and Case IH. The top 2 brands are one solid color and AGCO has progressed to be core brands to match the other big two.

      They may have a good machine, but people got burnt by massey bad(from combines, to the 2000 series transmission issues), and many vowed to never go back to it.
      Perhaps they have a plan, but it sure isn't working or looking good up here. Also would have helped if they would have backed the brands they are named after: Allis Chalmers and Gleaner.

      I would love to do the Ford/New Holland story. My issue at this time is finding the classic blue machines to film. I get to see the new NH T8, T9 tractors and the CR combines. Unfortunately I have not been able to find the classic Fords, Sperry New Holland’s, Versatiles and early New Holland’s like I would like too to tell a complete story. I am always looking so as I get the blue machines filmed I will be able to make the history video.

    Now I understand why some brands haven’t merged because sales recognition. For AGCO to grow it need to build better dealerships that can train farmers in handling n understanding of their products. Some AGCO products have high cost to their spare parts compared to CNH. I do see GSI playing bigger part maybe other farm related products been brought by AGCO for total farm solution. Great vid BTP👍👍

    AGCO’s relationship with TAFE is worth exploring, especially the relative financial strength of both companies. Also, in your summary of the video there are hay mowers shown which are a result of buying and re-branding Fella hay products of Germany. Later on they also buy the Lely grass machinery business as Lely exits to concentrate on robotic dairy cow management. Lely included the Welger round baler business which at last has brought some stability to AGCO’s implement businesses, at least in Europe. Let’s not forget Valtra either, bought partly to get back into the engine manufacturing business but also adding another exclusive line of tractors which are gaining market share steadily.

    I'm a fan of AGCO and their brands, so I always enjoy these videos highlighting their history along with the "then versus now" comparison. There does seem to be a fair bit of disdain due to their phase-out of the Allis name and the orange paint, but their quality has continually improved and I feel they made a strategically smart decision by focusing on Massey Ferguson. MF seems to have a global presence that dwarfs the presence Allis-Chalmers ever had (globally; too many people get hung up on the North American market only), and they had so many brands under their belt that consolidation was badly needed. They have a smart portfolio in NA now with Massey (full line, consumer and prosumer brand), Challenger (commercial use brand), and Fendt (the "Cadillac"). You still see some co-branding, such as Hesston by Massey Ferguson, which works well, in my opinion. And in the last few years they have really been pushing the envelope with features and technology, which I sincerely hope will gain them some serious market share. Their only weakness in my eyes are the dealer network in NA; that is the biggest issue I see, and one where John Deere really dominates the market. Just my two cents; great video!

    • @bigtractorpower
      @bigtractorpower  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great post. I am an Allis fan and miss orange but Allis helped build AGCO as a foundation and built a company 8 times bigger than AC was. Hart-Parr coined the term tractor in 1903 and had a loyal following. In 1929 Hart-Padd the original tractor became Oliver. I bet there were loyal Hart-Parr owners that thought what’s this Oliver. Oliver grew and grew and eventually became White Farm Equipment which then became part of AGCO. Unfortunately time changes things but AGCO has progressed and grown and has nearly 30 years of its own history now.
