    What I always used to do is simply build the skybox around the actual map. Then, at the end, place the skybox entity at 0,0,0. Select it and all geometry that I want to place in the miniature skybox and scale it down by 16x, and move it out of the map.
    That way, you can do much more complex connections than just having a pre-measured cube extending into the skybox. It also fixes texture alignment for you without having to resort to inconsistent texture resolutions.

    nevermind, i misunderstood and thought it meant you had to put your level directly at the center of the world for the skybox to appear around it. i build a large map and its nowhere near the center of the map and it would take too long to move it all but i figured out that the skybox still works. but it moves along when i move like a regular skybox so i still have to fix that. but the other thing don't even worry about that.

      Too late to comment but in the edit menu there is Select All option. Using it you can move the whole level at once. You can do this precisely with transform option but I won't recommend this method since it can sometimes break things randomly and it will be hard to check in this scenario.

    A good tip I've picked up is to put the sky_camera at 0, 0, 0, select the edges of your level, hold Shift and drag them off out into the map, and then scale it down to fit the size that the map will be.

    Problem fixed, i just changed textures to 2d skybox and then again back to 3d. and now i have nice skybox! Btw thanks for the tutorials i have learned a lot from you in a month

    A simpler way of keeping the texture scale, would be to keep texture lock and texture scale on (It's an icon along the top row with 'tl' written on it, and arrows either side) and then making everything smaller, which can also be more easily done, by pressing CTRL + M and then making everything 0.0625 its original size.

    Okay, thanks for clearing up the confusing part of either having a sky-camera at (0,0,0) or is it just a small representation of it. For the second part, I think it might have also had to do with the size and complexity of the sky-box that was constructed a long time ago before learning on how to reduce resource waste of the map.

    a simpler way to handle the scaling/texture problem is to toggle the scaling texture lock button on the toolbar, positioned at #26 from the left, #13 from the right.

    A better way to make a 3d skybox is to work in the "real world" first, and then select everything that you want to be in the 3dsky, including a skycamera that you place in 0.0.0, and scale transform the selection to 0,0625 (1/16). This way, your 3d skybox fits 100%, Also make sure to have texture lock and texture scale lock on so the texture matches as well. This way you can even have displacements that fits 100%
    To scale transform right click on one of the 2d-viewports and choose transform!

    You shouldn't have to as the skybox acts as a wall anyway, but if the corner is supposed to be inside the map then you can put in a no draw wall or up-scale the skybox a bit more.

      do anyone still asking this question in 2019
      those are func_physboxes
      if you want them to collide with other things and the player you need to make sure the "Debris" box is NOT checked
      you also need to add "Health level to override motion" to be something greater than zero, and "strength" greater than zero so when you shoot at it, it moves

    if you have the minituare skybox in the middle of the level how come you're not seen super huge in the background with it. does the skybox camera not accept player characters?

    I seem to have already solved it :) What I did was to open the .bsp file in GCFScape, and in it there was a materials folder! I simply put that into my other materials folder, and voila, it worked.

    Hi Philip, thanks for putting up these tutorials! I have a question about dynamically editing the properties of the sky_camera. Each time the players spawns in my level, I'd like to be able to choose which way the camera faces (specifically, I'd like to change the Yaw value). Is there away to target a named sky_camera entity and specify the Yaw angle? This is for a cognitive psychology study.
    If this isn't possible, do you know if I can use 2 skycameras for the same map and choose between them?

    As i thought i have a problem with the l shaped map but not directly connected with the 3d skybox, its just that from one corner of the L i can see the other one

    How to make the sky paintable? I mean the clean blue texture you have there, it's paintable in Garry's Mod
    And by the way, the skybox is projected a little bit under the map, that moving it even by the smallest Hammer scale won't fix the problem. I can also see the box in the skybox from the normal map, if I go to the outer side, close to the wall.

    I am not sure where the assumption came from about 3-D Sky-boxes, Philip, but some tutorials say that the sky camera should directly be at the (0, 0, 0) coordinate rather than the sky camera just representing it in a smaller scale (such as putting a level at (0, 0, 0) coordinate and having stuff around the sky camera to be part of the sky). Also, why is it that some people have difficulty downloading a map with a 3-D sky-box from a server that has a content downloads plugin?

    I don't think I know what "mapping" means, lol. Since I've already said that I was trying to import a gmod map into SFM.
    I didn't move the materials folder from the .bsp file, I only copied it. Not sure what's happening to you, though :/

    I have been trying to import a gmod map into SFM. What settings should I use when I decompile with BSPSource and compile with hammer, for a map such as big_city? I believe it has custom textures, and therefore I attempted to decompile it with the "extract embedded files" checked. But that only made hammer crash when I tried to open it. If I leave that option unchecked, it will load up in hammer, but there are several textures missing (Shown as white textures, instead of black and purple squares)

    Whenever I create a 3D skybox, it seems to create properly, however where skybox textures are in the 3D skybox it creates an effect similar to that of a map leak, where nothing new is rendered, and moving the cursor creates copies of the currently displayed scene. This is a problem as this occurs in the true map aswell. Not sure what to do about this, and I haven't seen anyone else with this issue. Also, yes, the 3D skybox is big enough to cover the level.

    I already tried that. The problem isn't that the skybox is misaligned, the problem is that only part of it appears. The Southeast quarter of the skybox shows up perfectly fine, but the rest of it is completely missing.

    I have 2 questions: when im not worried about alignement, it doesnt matter where i put the sky camera? I can just stick it anywhere outside the level? And second, does it work properly when its an L shaped map?

      2d skybox has a use when the level itself obscures any area that the player will be able to see over, or just an easy test sky sorry for late response

      Do you have toggleable lights? If yes and you're mapping for cs go, don't use any kind of flickering or toggleable light

    So, I put a skybox in my map and now I can't load it up. It gets stuck on "Portalflow 1...2...3...4...5...6..." and I don't know why. The size of my map isn't a problem, because I have a terabyte of space on my computer. Is the skybox the problem? Or....?

    Ok, I fixed that, not sure what I did wrong. Whenever I run my map, I can see the sky but not the 3D objects. It's lined up properly, has the sky_camera but the objects just arent appearing, i'm not sure what i've done wrong.

    I have a problem. I got my skybox working, but the light it should emit is now gone. I got it working at one point, but as soon as I moved some of the props to get a better view the problem came back. I've checked if anything is coming out of the skybox, both the miniature-scale models skybox and the actual maps skybox, but everything was inside them. I also tried loading a pointfile but it seems I don't have one, and I don't know how to create one. Any suggestions how to fix this?

    CORRECTION; Upon further inspection, I have realized that only the southeast corner of the skybox appears. The rest of the skybox simply will not show up.

    Problem. I am currently editing a map but there is a brush with the sky texture on it and when I delete it another one is still there and no matter how many times I delete it there will still be a somewhat infinite brush there any help ?

    hello there! didn't know where to ask or search for an answer, so here it is :P
    i don't seem to be able to apply skybox textures from lost coast, day of defeat etc, on my maps. i have the games in my library but something doesn't work. any solutions?

    Need help! Why i can see my skybox model on map through sky. Also i can see resized copy of my map in sky.

    is it normal when I go into map's corner and 3d skybox a bit dissapears?

    What does Skybox_Swapper do? I saw that entity in Hammer, but couldn't find any information on it.
