  • Round Back Armchair, one of the most classic of Ming furniture and it's also my long cherished goal. In this video, you will check how to do it from former to the last. The process I spent nearly 200 hours in total.
    圈椅,明式家具代表作,經典中的經典,亦是我長久以來追求的目標。視頻中您將看到我是如何從模板製作到最後完成,總共歷時約200個小時。

Roy Hoo I hope more people see this video and can see how talented you are! Thank you so much for showing your process! I was inspired to both do woodworking because of my grandpa but also because of all the Antique Qing Chinese wood furniture that my parents got when we lived in China. My dream is to be able to make furniture like this for myself and to further my abilities in woodworking since I believe you are on a higher level of woodworking from people in the west. You mention a woodworking guild, is this in China or Taiwan? How would a 外國人 that doesn't speak much Chinese be able to learn more? I know you mention that I should get stuff from the makers of the pieces I want, but for me it is not about having the items since I have them, I just want to learn how to do this for personal growth and satisfaction. Thanks again for your videos!

Hey, Paul. Thank you for your highly appreciation. I’m just an ordinary carpenter enthusiast. Same like you, I hope I can make Ming Style furniture for my family. I live in Shanghai, and the woodworking club I attended is named 堤旁树. The club has several lessons to teach members how to do Ming Style Furniture. For foreigners, it truly a bit hard to understand because different culture background. Besides, most of Ming Style Furniture documents are in Chinese. I recommend you a book, THE BEST OF THE BEST. THE MQJ COLLECTION OF MING FURNITURE. Written by Grace Wu. It can helps you to know more about Ming Style Furniture. To be mentioned, this book just tells you how the style Ming Furniture is, not tells you how to do it.
I’m going to move to Vancouver, Canada this year. And my dream is to get a carpenter career and then have a woodworking workshop in future. After that, I’d like to set some lessons to teach members how to do traditional Chinese furniture with mortise and tenon.
I will keep post in this channel. My videos will all come from my hobbies, like cooking, woodworking, fishing and traveling, etc in future.

@@royhoo7177 Shanghai is a really cool city and loved being there! For that matter Vancouver is too. I wish the best for your move! I will look up the literature you sent. I look forward to your future videos and endeavors! I hope to see more of what you make and maybe even more instances of interacting with you. If you do become a teacher I would love to be your student.

for the back rest I haven't done mine but I am thinking of steam bending the wood on a bending form. the best wood for bending would be ash, red oak, white oak and for this the bend is not very severe and I think I could bend cherry or maple as well. I have paduk ( I don't know if this is the same as the Hunghuali). there are different varieties of Paduk being sold and I have some varieties that go a brown which I don't like. any way bending wood is kind of risky because of spring back or relaxation.

Steam bending is ok for other style furniture, but not suitable for Ming Furniture. The back rest is take out from a whole wood. You can check my Part I video at 3:02~3:10 and 8:19~9:22. I used band saw to make the S type back rest. Paduk is not same as Huanghuali. They are totally different wood, although both of them are hardwood.

@@royhoo7177 the reason why I said to bend was the grain pattern and ease of planing or spoke shaving or using the scraper. you can also laminate bend them by gluing 1/16 or 1/8 inch parts. 6 or 8 pieces would be enough.

Hi, thank you for watching. I bought the plan on www.taobao.com, an e-commerce platform in China. Search 圈椅图纸 and you will get a lot of items. But I'm afraid it will be a bit hard to you if you don't understand Chinese.

I bought the chair plan on www. taobao.com, an electronic business platform in China. You search "圈椅图纸" and then will get lots of results.
