It is called «Russian variation» because it was introduced by strong russian grandmaster Ragozin and then it was played by many other strong russian grandmasters and world champions(you may have heard of him due to «Ragozin Defence» in the Queen’s Gambit Declined).

I've loved the Gruenfeld since I first saw it, in a book, played by Fischer. I've won a few really nice games on the black side including a couple of destructive attacks but have also been crushed by the white center. It's not for everyone but it has solid pawn structure, active piece play and plenty of tactical opportunities down the long diagonal.

The Russian Variations (4 Nf3 Bg7 5 Qb3)have become a popular weapon against the Grünfeld Defence. when Anatoly Karpov used it very successfully in the 1986 World Championship match, when all other methods were failing to achieve an advantage against Kasparov's stubborn resistance. Antonio, your assumption is correct: The Classical or Russian Variation:
So named because starting in the 1930's, a succession of Russian Champions used this line, including Botvinnik, Smyslov, and Bronstein. This is the second most popular variation to the Exchange.

Nothing much about it's name but sources say that it is called Russian System just because it was pioneered by Soviet masters (mainly Botvinnik and Symslov) in 20th century.

Your "new game" was played in October by Serbian junior Velimir Ivic. I would guess that MVL was quite likely aware of this game. In the original, white (Drenchev) answered 12...Qa5 with 13. Nd2 (rather than 13. Qd2) and the game amazingly finished after move 15 with a black win.
