Hi Jon. Thanks so much for sharing Ray's Candy Store. We're visiting from Scotland this week and popped in yesterday. What a guy - he was actually lying on the floor behind the counter when we went in, but assured us he was fine! Had an amazing egg cream and a long chat about our country, and he was delighted to pose for selfies! Long live Ray! 👍
Great to watch ! My maternal grandmother came over from Hungary and worked as a Cook and nannie in Jewish homes in Manhattan. She learned to make most ethnic dishes they ate and she shared them with all her family.
hahaha waaay over priced, $9.50 for french toast????? in such a grubby tiny place.... c'mon. We have the same problem in London with over priced Jewish places
@@charlesjay8818 it’s cause places that are kosher have to have an extra employee dedicated to verifying it stays kosher. It’s how all places are like that
New York has changed and is changing a lot since I left in 2020 cause of visa issues to Canada. Looking forward to come to New York one day and experience the nostalgia and the new stuff
And 3 more spots to add to my list! I'll be visiting NYC for the second time next May and your videos are so helpful. You always share such special places, I just can't wait to try them out!
I like that youre at the B&H counter. Ofter when places are full you can ask and theres room at a bar or counter. I prefer it as youre higher up and can see everything going on.
3:58…Now THAT would be a good kind of friend to have! Anyone who brought me a Knish (especially one of the Corned beef ones from DZ Akins here in San Diego) would DEFINITELY get a big old smile from me!-I grew up Catholic but in a predominantly Jewish school district in suburban New York City so our school cafeterias always featured Surprisingly good knishes as a lunch choice and most days I’d end up choosing at least one since they were hot and yummy and they were only 15cents in the late ‘70’s
I’ve been making challah bread French toast for my wife on Mother’s Day for years. Hot potato & cheese knish with gravy! Never said I was kosher. Russ & Daughter’s salt belly lochs. Didn’t pee for three days but delicious!
It's videos like these that make me incredibly jealous of your life lol. And Greg's life. And Ben the Camera guy's life :-) I have extended family visiting NYC next month, so I am going to do my best to (at the very least) get them to stop at Ray's..
I absolutely can say that H&H bagels is the best bagels that ever had. Now I’m trying to find something comparable here in Florida which seems to be impossible. Thanks for sharing.😊
So few kosher dairy restaurants left in NY. Ratner's on Delancy was kinda famous and was used in the film 'French Connection' but they went out of business 20 years ago.
This has to be one of my favorites that you've done. Felt like I was right there with you. Must have been tricky for Ben to film shoulder to shoulder like that. Great video guys, thank you for sharing.
Yonah Schimmel is the best knish by far- personally, I like the sweet ones (definitely warmed up). Russ and Daughter’s is always my first stop in the Lower East Side and Yonah Schimmel is my second.
Great video as always, Jon! My suggestion with the captions though is to be consistent with it-- either have them or don't. It's a little distracting having them come and go. I think I have the same jacket as you by the way haha
Jon, first off. Happy new year to you and the family. I hope Adriana and your new bundle of joy are doing well. As always you hit it right on the nail with old New York eateries. Thank god for goldbelly. although it's a bit pricey, at least you can order some of these tasty morsels if you live out of state. Keep up the good work. I'll be watching your friend Mike. P.S. You will hit the half million mark in '23. :)
I (regretfully) grew up on Long Island and my dad would bring home Yonah Schimmel's knishes all the time. I've been living in the city proper now for almost 15 years and I never go :/.
I grew up in New York, and Manhattan for years. Unfortunately I never even knew about B&H. Ratners was a famous dairy restaurant, right near Yonna Shimmel, which was one of my favorites.
Not many people make Egg creams anymore! Only the really old school people make em and it's always a blessing to order one. If you haven't tried one, you definitely should!
I went to Yonah Shimel in the 70s on the regular, my favorite pastry was the " Prune Danish " 😋 , I prefer the Gabillas style of Knish deep fried and sliced with mustard 😅😊
Hi! Do you have a video on NYC merchandise? (Like giftshops at Empire State or Statue of Liberty etc, when I go I definitely want to take some miniature sculptures with me and I have no clue what the prices would be)
I had the pleasure of going to Ray's Candy store and meeting Ray last March and had deep fried Oreos in Tompkins Park across the road. I got some looks from locals.
@@HereBeBarr I like to think it was jealousy but I felt like I was doing something wrong like you are not permitted to eat in that park? Didn't stop me though.
I lived in the LES from 2006 -2011. Ray’s was something I just stumbled into one night after leaving a bar, quite hungry. The guy was already so old back then-- shocked to see him still alive and kicking. Ice cream, Egg Cream… definitely good. But oh how you missed his amazing chili-dog!!! One of the best in NY. (He also used to sell socks behind the counter for some reason?)
Wow. Knishes, matzoh ball soup, challah french toast, borscht, stuffed cabbage, potato latkes, pierogis, Russ & Daughters & Katz Deli. My mouth is watering. A beautiful ode to Ashkenazi, Eastern European Jewish cuisine. Love it! What did Rudy do to make it difficult for hot dog vendors to sell knishes and why? Also, did the Matzo Ball soup at B&H use vegetable broth instead of chicken broth?

Please tell Ray not to quit! We're from the UK and visiting in May. Definitely going to pop up to Ray's. Can't wait!

Visiting this weekend! I just added all these spots to my saved places in Google Maps!
I absolutely love stuff like this. I live for the old institutions in this town.
Awesome! Will Check Out Those Places Soon! thanks for the recommendations
Wow this looked amazing…I have never had a knish and I plan on going when I ever head that way
You got the best Nyc videos hands down
Appreciate that

Another great video. Thanks for the content. You should do a video with Myzel’s chocolates on West 55th by 61/2 Avenue
After 59 years as a New Yorker, I moved to Florida 17 years ago. I still miss all the great food, thanks for sharing.
I was smiling the entire way thru this video. This is kind of content that makes you the best. You don't hear about these places anywhere else!
Thanks Mark!
My grandkids are always excited when they ride past Ray's Candy. They are excited because that is also their Uncle and Grandpa's name!

I loved all of these locations! I have never seen any of these spots before! Great coverage and awesome eats, for sure! 🥳
Got my subscription with this one. Thanks for shining the light on these places. They deserve the love as much as they need it
Strong as a rock, working from morning to night at the age of 90.
Great video! Planning to visit Ray's when I come to NYC from the UK in April. What an amazing character :)
🤣 thanks guys the leap left him out in the open 👁️👽🙏
All 3 are excellent choices
I hope Rays is still there in December. It’s in our list to visit for sure!
Omg, live here over 20 yrs now , walked past this all the time Did not realize what this place is . gonna have to go to Rays 113 ave A

Very true, esp in Manhattan.
The knishes are delicious!
B&H been there several times delicious challah and entrees. It's a kosher dairy mecca thumbs up. Very important to support small business
You have made me miss New York so much. Can’t wait to visit but I can’t say that I miss the cold weather. Thanks for sharing. I’m now in the sub.😊
I think of egg cream as an ice cream soda without the egg cream. And it has to have Fox U Bet syrup.
Love ❤️ a knish with mustard. Like Greg I’ve only had the mass produced kind. I need to head over to this place.

Very hard filming in these spots! Ben earns his free food (and salary 😂!)
I hit Little Poland for Pierogies and potato pancakes. Those Schimmel knishes are indeed superb.

I’m glad you are featuring B&H .. it still has edge like it was from when NYC had edge back in the 70s .. plus it’s all vegetarian !
There was a loansharking ring at Yonah Schimmel’s in the late 80’s. The police busted them. Great Knishes though.
