JVC CX-5K 1980's cassette player tear down and belt replacement repair

Video showing steps required to disassemble a JVC CX-5K vintage cassette player, and change the main rubber drive belt.
The belt used in the video was purchased from the following eBay seller:

This belt and the steps required to change it should be the same for the following JVC models: CX-F5K, CX-7K, CX-F7K
Missed off a sound test at the end of this video but there were no issues 🙂

So glad you made this thanks I have a CX-F7k, thanks the service manual is kinda scary, they packed these so tight but they are truly wonders
I've replaced the belt on the CX-R7k and that actually looks easier compared to this model

Thank you! The CX-R7K I believe has the same head mech but no buttons on the door so imagine is a little less involved but I've never opened one up. Your CX-F7K will be very similar to the one in this vid.

Well, the inside of the F7k is a nightmare, it doesn't look like this, there are wires soldered all into the pcb board that you pop off underneath the inner lay that connect to the inner pcbs, making separation nearly impossible for belt replacement, they also soldered the motor with the wires covering that flexible circuit that you peeled back. I had to unsolder the wires from the motor to even get enough access to change the belt, but now after reassembly i'm getting sporadic response from the inputs on the front panel, sometimes it will work sometimes not

​@@ANTandTEC OK I'm back, i had a few issues, but who doesn't working on these old portables...broke blue wire going to a big giant blue capacitor (oops!) on the right side PCB, Also the contact switch lever didn't seem to be in the notch, it's working great now, i'll make a video highlighting a few of the issues I ran into working on the f7k, i was pretty nervous I totally destroyed some of the flexible pcb boards, but they seem to be able to take a lot of abuse lol

I’ve repaired a lot of these and they are a nightmare. Everything must be disassembled. And of course the sliding mode switch must be repositioned in the right way after cleaning. The center black gear is made of very brittle plastic which breaks with time in hundreds of pieces.

Hello, I have got a lot of cassettes and have got the model F7K, everything else works but I can't hear sound when playing the cassette, any suggestions, thanks

Could be many things with out seeing it. Do you get any 'hiss' when playing tape and volume is turned up?

Very good. These have a decent quality audio. They were one of the best at the time. £80 was a lot of money for a personal stereo at the time.
