For years I've been drawing. I've used shapes to construct the body many times. And always, without fail, the body itself has taken the most time to do, because the proportions were always off. This is literally the first time I've ever heard that the rib cage is "one and a half times the size of the head." Oh, my god, did that ever make things so much easier for me!
We're so glad it was helpful! Note: the ribcage is approx 1.5x the size of the head in FEMALE figures. In male figures it's about 2x the size of the head! 🤓
This has helped me SO MUCH with gesture drawings! Everyone else seems to just be able to but it's the thing I've always struggled with the most. I didn't understand where the lines were meant to go or anything. It was always "Just draw these lines and boom! Perfect" but mine were always too squashed or just... wrong. So thank you!!

Thank you, I finally understand the point to starting with a gesture drawing. I've taken drawing classes and it was always "don't overthink it, just capture the gesture and it shouldn't take long." So, I'd have quickly drawn, super inaccurate gestures, that I would then ignore during the next drawing step because they weren't accurate enough to be of any help. I never understood the point.
Taking the time to make sure the gesture drawing is actually ACCURATE makes SO much more sense! Thank you!
At 2:58 I was just thinking to myself “this rule of thumb won’t apply to balletic poses”, then… Bam! as if reading my thoughts. A ballerina flashes on the screen contradicting the rule.

Very cool. This is pretty much what I do for figure drawing, but I've always been confused by others seeming to treat gesture and anatomical construction as two separate exercises to be done as two separate drawings. Seems more natural to me to let one feed into the other when trying for a finished piece.
It took you twenty years to "develop" this method? OR did you take a university level figure studio class and learn this in one semester? (Because that's where trained artists learn to do this...heaven only knows who thought it up...but it's definitely older than twenty years. I know, because this is how we were taught over twenty years ago.)

What's different between this GSL method and older methods that look very similar? You can see the same sorts of techniques in early Disney animation, and certainly using lines for marking of the gesture and proportions where used before then.
I'm reading the how to draw comics the marvel way and it teaches a similar method - building the 3d forms on top of the gesture really is a tough thing to learn, but damn well worth it.

Wow, great instruction. The Fei character popping up is such a great way to convey the emotion of the situation. Often instruction can be so clinical, but shared emotion between instructor and student is such an underrated but critical aspect to learning.

Ohh, I love this! I've been doing something similar with the lines, shapes, then detail except yours is muuuch more structured and precise! I love that your method shows the structure's build-up in just 3 steps. I usually push back the opacity for the gesture and shape passes and leave my detail as the darkest line but it gets messy and I do a lot of back n forth. I'm gonna try the different colors and be more precise with my measurements. Thank you for the tips!😊

Thanks. This helps a lot, especially the gesture part. I learned a similar method in school that started with the shapes and forms but my figures always looked strange, particularly with the shoulders. One of my major hangups is trying to do all three steps at once.

Gesture - shape - line (different colors)
This has actually helped me with understanding lines of action
It's less like one making up the whole figure, and more like many following the lead of one, resulting in a figure.

Whoah! I never thought to build a body using shapes before! What a great idea! I would just do a generic rectangle block body like a minecraft guy and try to manipulate that into looking like a real person. thanks for the video!

i tried this for the first time and of course it sucked, but the pose looked natural for once, the small tips about keeping the head between the legs, parallel lines, and shapes really helped

You can sometimes deliberately unbalance a figure so even though you draw a still figure the viewer’s brain continues the movement and gives an artwork motion and a sense of moving through time
You can also lookup Riley method instead

this is so good! but, does it work with more stylized bodies? sorry if the question is silly
It should do! I’ve used it for very cartoony styles and it does work however the shorter the limbs the less gesture-y they are (which is one of the reasons many shows like gravity falls or adventure time ignore elbows a lot)
People wan't a tip? Learn shapes then use line of action only. It would be easier for you after you learnd shapes. Draw as if feels and don't follow so many rules.

it tok you 20 years to develope... sounds as if you claim this is youur invention. when i am very sure its a group of techniques that is used widelu all over the art world for many decades.. its still a very usefull informative videos. presented very well and looks great. but that one line bothers me , as it makes it sound like this is your invention
lol exactly! besides the fact that it was used for ages, there are books from the fifties that go exactly over this - Loomis etc.

I think you both are thinking too deeply about that 😭 develop isn’t always synonymous with ownership. It’s made clear this isn’t an original strategy given how it’s named. Developed is probably being used in th context of how this artist has improved with this method. Even methods improve with the artist who uses it, for example I am horrible with gesture drawings because I do not do it often. But the more I do it, the better it looks, and it begins to look and work Better and Better for me

In English, when you say ORIGINAL, you claim ownership... like "her original drawing" "her original recipe" it means originated by her. Which is not the case here of course. It really does not matter at this point, just don't idolize anybody and keep drawing.
For those who want to learn I recommend books by by Gottfried Bammes, easily found online.
It's a good combination of anatomy, and references to the past masters.

But really recommend checking out Bammes - great books and are available for free online.
I haven't done any art in over 20 years, so needless to say I'm so out of practice, I don't think I can even draw stick figures without having to use an eraser. 😅😂
Here's a problem... a professional model walks like this, not an average woman.
Ok, but calling it "your" method, and saying it took you 20 years to develop it... sorry that's a tall order. People drew like this forever, and there are books from the 50s that detail this technique. Teach, but please don't take credit for something that is not yours to take.
If it takes me a year to make a book and develop a writing style that other people have, it doesn’t mean that I’m the only one with that writing style lol

@@Afiriss lol, we are not talking about personal style, it's a "method" = set of instructions. The video makes a claim that this is "her" method, and she even gives it a name - "MY gsl method". This way of drawing was done for generations, and giving it a silly name is not a claim to ownership (which apparently took her 20 years to "develop", whatever that means.)
The correct way to phrase it would be - "here is a technique I use, it took me 20 years to master" ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

1: This method does not belong to you. You just renamed it and made it harder.
2: "Your" method does not work on some poses.

1a. Idk what other method of drawing your referring to, so I can't really give my opinion about it.
1b. this method (and the way she presented it) helped a lot of people and something being easy or hard is subjective. Method 1 can be easier for person A, while method 2 is easier for person B, and that is alright
2. It may not work on some, but it woks on many, and you can change and tweak the method while still keeping the fundamentals to accommodate for *most* os those poses
3. Short and long is subjective as is easy or hard. I think it was short and easy, as do many others. There are also many people who don't share our opinion and agree with you instead (and all of that is fine)

you are not obligated to leave a hateful comment and the only appropriate time to do so is if the content is offensive or criminal

calling this so called method GSL developed by 20yrs etc... all just marketing gimicks when this is just typical traditional method of drawing!! this almost feel scam because you are promoting as if you invented this!
You should give credit where credit is due for hundreds of years this kind of art technique was taught this is nothing new.
Congratulations on learning how to draw figures it's not an easy skill to learn.
in the first two minutes i stopped watching and drew something much faster than usual and with better consistency.
