    These cars look like they're factory new cars... ÖBB did a great job there. I'm amazed they overhauled their existing cars that great. All the features and comfort of the new generation of Nightjets...

    The conversion looks great! Reducing to 4 couchettes was a good idea. The beds are good.

    I sleep with a pillow the thickness of a newspaper so that would suit my needs but I can see that people who like plumped up pillows would have a disturbed nights sleep, great post again Thibault, my bucket list is getting longer the more night trains you post, and yes I’m well over the 65+ 10 in fact I’m exactly that age, 😊

    Travelled from Hamburg to Basel: they replaced the usual 2 bed sleepers (lavabo, no shower) with an old CityNightLine double-decker, and gave us a lower compartment. Having used those early 2000s, I didn't know that they still had some spare (thought all CNL were sold to Iran) , and I did not remember those being so small!!!

    What I would do with those pillows, is I would take an extra pillow from one of the other beds, and put them next to each other. You should then end up with a standard size pillow.

    Marvelous. Convert a coach into a sleeper? What a concept! I'd love to see that in the United States but no coach stock here is really suitable for such a conversion. So, I'd love to see what could be done with a Siemens Venture shell.😁

    Great for the bike racks, but missing from a modern sleeping car are showers. If you are to rival a plane+hotel, you should provide either induvidual sinks in every room or showers for whole car so people can get off the train ready for the day.

    The double deck car is interesting. The lower marking that is almost but not quie RIC indicates it is an ÖBB car, but higher up, there is the SBB CFF FFS markings from switzerland. Didn't see the markings for the new couchette car. Am curious on the financial arrangement. I take it the rolling stock is owned by ÖBB ? Is it leased to SBB and DB for their joint service, or do they contract with ÖBB to run the service (so ÖBB staff on-board? .
    ÖBB has plenty of trains that don't touch austria (France to Germany for instance).

    In summer 2023 I travelled in these from Linz to Hamburg and back. I slept fine, it depends on the others in the compartment of course. Unfortunately it's technically not possible to install "mini cabins" in classic nightjet cars because that would require a big structural change (new sidewall), which means the offer isn't consistent between different lines.
    Sometimes the new Bbcmvz are replacing Bcmz or Bvcmbz which can be a problem because the new cabins only have four beds, so if fully booked out not everyone would have a place.
    One disadvantage compared to classic couchette cars by the way: There are no more separate washrooms; you have to wait for a free toilet if you just want to wash your hands or brush your teeth.
    What is your problem with the pillows? Not enough stuffing/volume? That, it seems, is something nobody can ever agree on ... I've been to fine hotels offering a selection of different pillows to choose from but that would be too much to ask for on a train.
    The deluxe compartment in the ex-CNL doubledeck sleepers are great, I've used them years ago. Nice to have your own bathroom and breakfast table with chairs, much more space than on the usual "Comfortline" sleeping-cars. Economy compartments are very small though.

    obb's pillows are thinner than my patience, i think 😭however the interior renovation for these rooms are pretty neat, i haven't traveled to another country yet (live in U.S., stuck with only amtrak unfortunately) but i hope that i'll be able to take the trans-siberian one day as that's a huge goal of mine, but unfortunately probably not until russia decides to stop trying to invade and bomb ukraine and also for them to stop making being LGBT be punishable with prison time (as a trans person, i don't want to be in prison for my identity, especially not in russia)... inshAllah one day, but thank you for making these videos :)

      I mean you can travel there right now, it's not a locked out country, albeit the visa would be pain to get but I'd bet not unusually hard to obtain, in regards to even prewar situation.
      Quite frankly, I don't see in our lifetime russia ever getting LGBT friendly and i mean not just on the government level but among ordinary people, especially those you'd find on the trans Siberian train. It's not this romantic american style "discover russia" many like to imagine. People you'd meat there mainly use it for for work or visitin families, because there is really no affordable way for them to do it otherwise.
      And this common ordinary folk you'd meet there would quickly show you the best of the habits they know, especially when it comes to drinking. It would not be rommanic at all if not borderline dangerous.
      This all while assuming you would bite the bullet and not stand out as a trans person and, assuming english is your first language, youd learn some russian as they really don't speak english there.
      Not to shatter your ideas, i also would love to hop on it one day, but even as a white dude that speaks bit of russian myself, I'd be extremely cautious and I dunno if it's a good idea at all for upcoming decades even.
      If you want one to one experience to siberian trains take the kazak trains. They are pretty much the same thing and most of the people also still speak russian there for the authentic feeling i guess. From the pictures of endless tundra taken from the window, noone will be able to tell a difference anyway.
      Cheers

    299 Wow they did go up with their prices. This was a main complaint all over Austria. It doesn't matter how far in advance you book prices are always high. I absolutely hate flying, the airport experience etc. but for this price I would take a plane.

    •  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yeah unfortunately.
      This January, during the German railway strike I couldn't take my Nightjet, so got a plane instead, and even with buying the plane ticket less then 24h in advance, it was cheaper, and it was a proper airline, and had checked luggage too.

    I do like the intercity trains in Europe, as they have a better characteristic than most in the UK and around the world. I say that they should export some older European intercity coaches like these to the UK to not let them go to waste. In the UK, we have our own version of FLIX, in the form of Lumo, which is a low-cost intercity operator owned by FirstGroup and the DfT. Some of the older stock mentioned should be exported over here to not let them go to waste.

    • @philippenaluna2312
      @philippenaluna2312 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There is one major issue with that. European stock is built to a different 'loading gauge' which is a little larger than the British 'loading gauge'. However, I believe that Eurostar stock is to European 'loading gauge' standards.

    • @TheosTrainsWalesOfficial
      @TheosTrainsWalesOfficial 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@philippenaluna2312 Yeah, I know about the loading gauge, but they could slightly trim the edges of the platforms here in the UK, to be able to fit them.

      It's a real shame, because british rolling stock used to be VERY good. In Denmark we had british MK3 sleepers in our domestic night trains for nearly 10 years, and they were often sold out within days because people absolutely loved to travel on them. I remember riding one from Copenhagen to Aalborg. Slept like a baby, even during the ferry shunting. The MK3 sleepers that went to Aarhus even functioned as hotels, because after arriving they were shunted to a small station close to the city center, where passengers were allowed to stay on until "check-out" time later in the morning. In the evening they were allowed to "check in" hours before the sleepers were shunted back to the main station.

  • @NerdX151
    @NerdX151 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The prices are not so amazing though. I looked up Hamburg-Zürich, well in advance (5 months). A ticket for 1 person in a couchette is 119 euro if you buy the cheapest ticket available, and we are talking about October which is outside the popular travel season. A direct flight from Hamburg to Zürich in the same month costs 45 euro, meaning even a return-ticket is cheaper than a one-way ticket on the Nightjet, and then you also take the gamble of: Will DB track repairs cause partial delays? Will your couchette get taken out of the train due to safety issues? And if so, will you get rebooked into another couchette or will it get replaced by a seating coach? There are so many risks involved with taking the Nightjet, but they are still making you pay a fortune for the product.

    I have traveled on those "new" trains and they are just terrible in my opinion. Lets just start with that new invention of open class carriges that resembles the way people traveled in 19th century except now the seats are not wooden,full lights are on all night, you wont be able to have a sec of sleep and they sell ticketals on long distance night train for destinations of 100km so people go in and out all night, old 6 people closed compartments were heaven for thia kind of service, ofcourse it is all about they are forcing you to pay extra for upgrades where sleeping in cabin of 6 people will be +80 euros minimum, which is absolutely astonishing price and then if yiu want a privat mini cabin where you are litterary traveling in a claustrophobic sardine can you pay 20e extra. Obb is showning us the most bizarre capitalistic model of future travel and with this kind of solutions how do you actually expect we will ever travel green
