(Pretty Terrible Takeoff by Skybus' BN Islander G-SSKY From Land's End whilst carrying parcels for Atlas Air, possibly a little overloaded :/)
Additionally: DHC Twin Otter G-ISSG and BN Islander G-BUBP
** As many of you have pointed out this is not actually terrible, but is in fact a reasonably well executed short field take off, so thank you for informing me :)
So please before commenting that I'm a retard, or that I have no piloting experience (which in all fairness I didn't at the time) I am aware!
    Thanks
    Sam

Ah yes, the lands end tactical departure. The trick is to build speed in ground effect, then pull up and gain altitude quickly at the airfield perimeter. This minimises the risk of small arms fire from the local Cornish separatists.

That was a soft-field take off. It's a technique used when departing damp, grassy or dirt runways. As soon as possible, back pressure is applied to get the nose wheel off the ground to reduce drag (from the soft ground). The aircraft is then made to become airborne as soon as is safe. Then, the pilot stops the aircraft climbing and maintains a level attitude which allows the plane to accelerate while in "ground effect". Once the aircraft has gained enough speed (kinetic energy) by flying level, the pilot can then pull the nose up and convert much of that speed to altitude (potential energy). This technique allows the plane to clear obstacles at the end of the runway despite the soft ground. This is how and why the plane climbed so rapidly at the end. Now granted, it wasn't necessary in this case but it was neither unsafe nor a terrible takeoff. Guy was probably just practicing. Perfectly acceptable. Funny thing is, he probably did that to impress YOU since he saw you filming! :)

Yes, that take off would be very valid on the coasts of Papua New Guinea, where wet and grassy airstrips weren't always mown. For example, at places like Aitape on the northern PNG coast, you'd use the propellers to mow a bit more runway as you turned around, giving yourself a slightly longer runway (ahem!) and then do a take off like this. Nice landing, btw. :)

    • @calvinnickel9995
      @calvinnickel9995 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely not.
Holding the nose wheel up before the plane is ready to lift off increases drag and lengthens the takeoff roll.
The only time it doesn’t is on soft fields like grass or gravel where the drag of the nose wheel and weight on the main wheels is higher than the airframe drag.
No if you want to have a short takeoff roll on a hard surface you
hold the brakes, set takeoff power, release the brakes, and do a normal rotation.

Lands End has a pronounced hump in the middle of the runway, so it may have appeared to you that the aircraft 'settled down' but in actual fact it was just floowing the natural curvature of the ground. Early rotation, not excessive, results in only a bit more drag. Objective is to be airborne as early as possible and reduce the frictional losses in wheels. Hence, most advantageous if you have larger frictional losses in wheels (grass. water...). If not windy this technique should be ok.

Not a 'terrible take off' at all. Having spent a few years working around Islanders, I've seen this 'fun' take off a few times, and even been on board on one occasion (just me and the pilot). I can tell you the common denominator....no passengers! Usually the Skybus Islander pilots have passengers...but I'd be willing to bet a significant amount that this guy was simply taking advantage of having no passengers, to keep low to the ground after take off, building up some speed in order to carry out an exhilerhating steep climb. Just having a little fun basically, but all within the confines of good airmanship and safety.

What was terrible about that? Perfectly executed take off. Given the load and craft......

Looks like a normal short field takeoff to me.

Might be the pilot on that Islander who jokingly sits at the back of the plane reading a newspaper without the stripes on his white shirt. The unbeknown passengers board the plane sitting waiting for the pilot to show up, the pilot in disguise as a passenger crumples the newspaper up then checks his watch when the passengers turn round to see what the fuss as he gives the I'm fed up waiting sigh, gets up walks passing the passengers up to the cockpit, sits on the pilot's seat, starts the engines then taxis, takes off as the petrified white knuckle passengers sit in shock. 🤣

Apparently, whoever said these takeoffs were terrible, does not know anything about flying.
