    Thank you and for everyone criticizing for not simply removing the toilet I’m a 55 year old woman trying to lay this floor in my bathroom by myself. I don’t have the money to pay someone to do it and I’m not able to lift my toilet. I know enough to know if I remove the toilet I have to buy another seal. I would rather cut around it than go through removing the toilet. Btw if you can remove the toilet you don’t need this video in the first place so keep moving.

      I've been in this business along time and I've seen flooring installed every way possible. There are alot of egotistical installation installers or floor layers or flooring techs whatever they want to call themselves and most SUCK!!! So put the flooring in the best you can and move on to the next project chances are your the only one who will notice anyways. Good luck......

      Honestly the only reason I clicked on this video was looking for different techniques described around random PERMANENT obstacles. It just so happened that this random obstacle was a toilet. Although I myself would never scribe around a toilet I would lift it out and cut out the flange. But you're correct, not everyone has the ability to do that; and so for the diyre or the elderly, then this is a good fit. But As far as the money goes, if you're having somebody else install your floor and they cannot move a toilet maybe they shouldn't be in a home renovation field. Just saying toilet removal is about one of the easiest things you can for anyone that considers themselves a contractor or a Home Improvement specialist it's actually easier than most sinks and so not removing it and calling yourself a professional pretty much makes you a hack. And my reasoning for it isn't just for the purposes of easiness or for leaks, it's for the purpose of replacement of the toilet. Toilets don't always last forever. Sometimes they developed cracks, sometimes an accident may happen where something they fall into it and crack it. Anywho the point is that sometimes toilets need to be replaced and they don't all have the exact same profile. So now this floor that he laid for this person has to have their floor redone if they ever need to replace that toilet. By removing the toilet and simply cutting out the flange it removes that aspect of the floor ever having to be touched if the toilet needs to be replaced. Same reason why when I install floors in a kitchen remodel; my floors are installed wall-to-wall before any of the kitchen counters and cabinets. This way if they ever decide to remodel down the road the floor never has to be touched and they don't have to special order something to fit exactly what was there before. It leaves the remodeling option open to the homeowner. So again awesome for the diyre, the elderly, or the homeowner that decides they want to do this and is not planning to ever remodel or replace fixtures. But shoddy craftsmanship if you're a professional.

    Dividers also work well for pattern scriding and are a little quicker. I have been to just about every manufacturer floor training school in the country over the last 35 years. Armstrong used to have a two week course where they taught how to pattern every type of resilient covering. Once you learn that type of thing, you'll be amazed at how often you'll apply it to other aspects of carpentry.

    If the wax ring leaks it will now be trapped under the flooring. You should always remove toilet and install flooring underneath toilet. Make sure you have a new wax ring when you reset the toilet.

      If the toilet is not leaking and you’re just replacing the floor, why make it harder than it needs to be? I live alone and don’t have someone to help remove the toilet/replace wax ring etc. If the toilet starts leaking, I’ll deal with that.

    • @JaredOpoka
      @JaredOpoka 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Buffy Vachon if you install new flooring that will lay higher than the base of the toilet and then you seal it, you will never know if it does leak. It will trap the water and could cause water damage, mold etc... it will be much harder addressing all the issues later that can occur from installing the floor incorrectly now.

Also many people may try this with a non glue down product such as a free floating product in witch case will not leave room for product to expand.

      The same amount of gap is used when transferring the markings on the cardboard to the vinyl. In this case, the gap was the thickness of the ruler. When drawing the line on the vinyl, keep one edge of the ruler on the drawn line and mark a new line on the vinyl on the opposite side of the ruler. Keep repositioning the ruler as the new line is marked. As easier way to do the same thing is with a compass. Even easier is to use a contour gauge, also called a profile gauge from the hardware store.

    As you are going to seal it all round anyway , why not put a little silicone bead on the floor all around the toilet before the vinyl goes down ( then you might better stop water getting under the flooring from above whilst cleaning if the top seal is damaged . )

      or why not put a silicone bead all way round the toilet once you've fitted the planks??

    Some areas people live in is a code violation to caulk or seal your toilet. If you are going to sell your house and are doing this to improve the sale, remove the toilet or check your local city codes. You don't want to end up with a violation then have to pull up the toilet anyway and now you have a bigger mess to deal with.

    The actual correct way to do this is buy a baked potato 🥔 from a reputable seller and squish it around the perimeter of the customers house and without fail every time you will have the desired results

    As a flooring contractor, sorry but the proper way is to take the toliet out. Not only for a cleaner look but also because a floor will expand and contract so putting it up directly against the toliet could cause the floor to push up against the toliet resulting in peaking in spots. And according to all the plumbers I talk to you arent supposed to caulk around the toliet so leaving an expansion gap and filling it with caulk is not a good idea either.

    I agree remove toilet and install, also it has a lot more room for error on cut around toilet as toilet trims out. Still it was a cool technique.
