I was super confused about what job would be right for me, as I wanted to care for children but a lot of the jobs either paid super low or created a lot of stress. What I’ve found is that healthcare was the perfect route for me. The prospect of things like ob/gyn, pediatrics, and labor and delivery nurse really brought out my excitement in being able to help people, and there are so many cool areas in nursing!

Are you a SWer that works closely with OB/GYN or are you saying you are the OB/GYN? 🥺 I’m happy to hear how fulfilled and happy you are in your role. Sounds amazing 💗

I'm a LMSW and I felt this video hard... when you mentioned not wanting to be full-time with said agency, that is exactly the place I'm at with my own work as I am part-time right now and have no desire to take up a full-time position, the more I work there the more I realize that. When you said, being around your coworkers was part of reason for staying and that you would have left a long time ago if you hadn't felt that way for them, I've said this exact thing to myself. I think dealing with constant moral injury is really what has ruined this work for me. I feel stuck in the sense that I don't know what sector of SW I would be happy in. You mentioned not believing in the justice system, and I don't believe in the system I work within either (different from justice system) which makes it that much more difficult to figure out where to go and what to do? It's scary and worrisome but I appreciate you sharing this and reminding me that I am not alone in these thoughts and feelings.
Also some questions, what was the moment that you decided quitting was the answer, did something happen that clicked or was a it a slow-burn? How did you go about resigning? I.e you mentioned writing a letter- what did it entail, did you deliver it in person vs e-mail? Were you nervous about your boss/coworkers reactions? How did you process it all in accepting the end of a journey?

Hate that we've both been feeling these feelings, but glad neither of us are alone in them 💗💗 thank you for your comment and for your support. I wish you so much luck & courage & peace coming so soon. And thank you for the questions!

I am excited to see what area of social work you plan to work in next. I am currently in my MSW program and haven’t started my internship yet. I just know that I’ll be interning at schools when the time comes.

I think you’d do great in higher education. I began as an adjunct professor in November, and I fell in love. So much that I can’t imagine that I’ll go back to doing therapy. I’m working on my DSW and thankfully my school offers a social work education track. Good luck in whatever you do!

hiii!!! i don’t usually comment on youtube (this is a fault of mine because I usually am watching on my TV which makes comments non existent hahhaha) but i’ve been watching you since finding out your MSW journey. i love your content and love how passionate you are about our field of social work and truly think that i will continue watching you relentlessly until we are both old and grey. It is so nice being able to connect with you via vlogs because not only do i feel like we are the same person, you are a year older than i am and so it’s almost like i am getting advice about every step of the way for my own future. I hope you find excitement in whatever you chose to step forward with and I will be cheering and crossing my fingers for you every step of the way!!
i think this video also really spoke to the profession of social work too and is a big reason why I think a lot of us are scared to enter the field. Having to battle the conflict of our clients against a system that is made to watch them fail (in all capacities almost) is so hard and I think we just need to find the system to work in that this effects us the least. I feel this is probably not a great way of thinking about it, but i think it’s unfortunately the truth. I know there are probably some practices that you may not face any moral injury but I think there will always be barriers of some sort in our work, we just need to find the best fit for our personalities and our own individualized way in which we practice. I know you’ll find yours because of your passion and knowledge, i just can’t wait to see what it is!!!

Thank you for being honest about this. I’m in a similar position; thinking about leaving my 1st post grad job. It’s definitely an awkward position especially in the social work field

hate that we're both in that position, but glad that at least if we're in it, we're not alone in it!! good luck to you & all that will be coming your way 💗💗

I originally followed because you are in social work generally, but this video could not have come at a better time for me. I'll be sticking around and personally I am going through a career shift as well and have been searching for advice on ending the client relationships well and transitioning out of their lives as smoothly as possible

Life is too short to be a social worker. I think there's really only a small percentage of social workers that thrive and enjoy what they do. The rest of us are drowning and try to convince ourselves if we did enough self care, assert ourselves better, serting boundaries that is will get better. It will not.
