Lordes first album Pure Heroine was a real game changer to how music is played today, when David Bowie first heard it, he said she was the future of music, she wrote the songs and Joel Little produced it with a mimimalistic sound
Thanks for the shoutout and great review (you came close on the pronunciation (Key-roo Lin-knee-fur)! I'm always down for a great conspiracy theory regarding arts and so the "alleged" Lorde-Jack affair and things like "Gaylor" theory are nice, (mostly) non-serious/fun rabbit holes that are more for entertainment than truth-seeking lol. This was the album that converted me into a Lorde fan after dismissing the "Pure Heroine" era (though I finally gave that once I saw her perform some of those songs during her "Melodrama" tour and enjoyed it as well). Jack Antonoff mentioned that he's going more in an organic instrumentation route as opposed to electrical with Taylor, Lana, Lorde, and his own Bleachers project but judging from "Solar Power" (and the singles he's released from Bleachers outside "Chinatown") this productional change really hits you when they're performed live (Bleachers' performance of "How Dare You Want More" on Jimmy Fallon really put the recorded version to shame when it was released) and so this album (and "Solar Power") might end up sounding awesome live while only "meh" int heir recorded states. Also mispronouncing Billie's new album (and having goat offer corrections) is the unintentional running gag of '21 we didn't know we needed (and on the relationship point, about them both having been teenagers dating men in their 20s, unfortunately, it seems Billie and Lorde have both moved on to dating men in their 30s and 40s respectively, in their late teens and early 20s, which is more than a bit concerning/alarming depending how you look at it given what they've already been through/experience).
I should add, the reaction you had to "Solar Power" being "Freedom" was similar to a reaction I had when I first heard Sam Smith's "Stay with Me." I was like "why is some black dude singing "Won't Back Down" with different lyrics" lol
Funfact: Melodrama’s metacritic is 91 and that’s so goddamn high omg 💙 And in the list of the best album of all times. Album of the Century! 💙💙💙 Its a perfect marriage of Lyricism and production.
I loved your end point about the meaning of "solar power." Also I think you should listen to Grimes some day. She gets a bad rap for being odd and for being elon's girlfirend lol, but she makes her music almost completely on her own (production, writing, and album art). I think you'd really like it. Miss Anthropocene is her latest album and it's very good :) Also Jack Antonoff and Lorde met at a Grimes concert
oh also interesting you mentioned in the video how a lot of pop artists are going back to using real instruments, and Grime's did this in Miss Anthropocene. I think she said in an interview it was her first time experimenting with "real" instruments.
There's something really off about the solar power music video, I mean besides the midsommar thing, it's just this frame where's a bunch of trash in the sand and Lorde just tells the camera to move on, it is a very small thing but its very weird, I saw a tik tok where a girl said that this may be a climate change album, I may be overthinking this but anyway, great video, you are my new fantano
I had the same, when the trash appeared in the middle of the beach and she kind of ushered the camera away from it.. It looks like a spontaneous music video, but all these details started surfacing which feels like it's hiding a sarcastic tone to her message. The lyric about "throw my cellular device in the water" can also be twisted as a warning call to disposable products, consumerism and polluting oceans. I think this album might be something else.
Have you considered listening to Aldous Harding? Another great NZ singer with a unique sound for this day in age but also a homage to the past... And Bic Runga is another NZ artist who sings a lot about heartbreak.
Melodrama was a really important album for me in 2017 and it helped me a lot. I’m so excited for this next album. As for Jack Antonoff I’d like to see your review of his band Bleachers, his new album will be released in July and he has some singles out that you can listen too and also the three previous albuns are really good too, maybe they will help you understand him a little bit more.
Super interesting you say Solar Power sounds like Down by St. Vincent! Everyone else has been comparing it to At The Holiday Party from that same album Also thought you’d be interested to know: Phoebe Bridgers is guesting on backing vocals on Solar Power
i remember listening to the new the chicks album last year “gaslighter” and then found out jack antonoff produced it?! it’s an amazing country album, i really recommend it, jack is amazing here too
Ayy thanks for taking my suggestion :) And idk if you’re purposefully not remembering Billie Eilish’s upcoming album’s title, but even if you aren’t please keep doing it - it’s hilarious (and goat’s interjection has unintentionally perfect comedic timing lol)
Here's the thing. All of jack artists invent their own idea, they help Jack to create a new neat sound. Lorde is inspiring because her ideas are clearly attached to the whole landscape now therefore it's her idea not Jack. There are times Jack gave up his offerings to them but not really every time, Lorde stated she demonstrated it alone last year so it's her idea, not a sample from Daddy's home and not close to Jack Antonoff
Yess, she’s also just said in an interview that this is her work. She said ‘I havnt made a jack antonoff record, I’ve made a lorde record.. to give him that amount of credit is frankly insulting’
i definitely see the similarity in freedom and solar power. but the only similarity is the choir sound and key. it’s a different chord progression and i personally think the cadence of the lyrics are super different. i never thought “plagiarism” when i heard it. especially if you put them side by side
@@stannisstewart4879 omg tysm i'll definitely sign up for the email list. ive been trying to avoid downloading twitter for as long as possible so it's a relief to know i have another way to get the news
A request: have you ever listened to Imogen Heap’s music? She has some incredible and truly unique music, I highly recommended it. I’d be interested in your thoughts on it. I’d recommend starting w/ her 2nd solo album Speak for Yourself, if you’re interested.
ahhh i get the chills everytime i listen to Ribs and Team, I MELT. They both remind me of my teen years (lorde is a year older than me), Ribs makes me think of my bff, which I met I was a prepubescent, Team and Tennis Court reminds me of high school and my first bf.
The song Solar Power was intentionally sampled from George Michael's Freedom, his estate gave Lorde and Jack their blessing, Plagurised is a bit overboard, and Taylor Swifts music changed after Lorde came out, there has been many other copycats since like Billie Eilish dare I say it
"Actually Lorde", but actually Kate Bush, and many more before her. At least I was hoping she would go further that "weird" way. From Solar Power I guess she is going back to a Royal phase. But I could be wrong!
I love this man

Your frustration with how good Jack Antonoff is cracks me up and is relatable. I don’t understand how he’s so good
And Lorde said that Solar power album will be like 60’s folk song with the touch of early 2000’s pop
Im so excited 💛💛💛
Melodrama is my favourite album of all time, glad that you've gotten around to listening to it!
NOT THE POWER POINT 💀
Thank you so much for reviewing this! She is incredibly talented and responsible for a lot of current pop trends.

thoroughly enjoyed this breakdown, definitely had to subscribe! :)
This is the first-ever video on youtube, I have come across that literally has 0 dislikes, yet. Love your insights.
I don’t know why, but I really don’t get a lot of dislikes. It is probably because I don’t do negative reviews.

There's a big Primal scream's Loaded vibe in Solar Power.
She actually contacted Bobby from primal scream after realising the similarities to get his blessing
Glad you enjoyed Lorde's music! Stoked to hear what you think of her upcoming album! Great review.
this is wholesome

She is a born and bred Kiwi (New Zealander)
When I heard Solar Power, I immediately heard The Rolling Stones," You Can't Always Get What You Want",surprisingly. Nice song.
interesting
for me its faith by george michael
you should check out Aldous Harding she's another werid one from New Zealand might be just your type lol
Dear Prof. Skye, how's that no one has ever told you Dan Smith looks like you?
Lmao

I get the pretentious kid thing, but I think you would enjoy songs like Ribs and Teams from Pure Heroine. I can't get enough of these earlier songs.

1:20 Why I don't listen to a lot of indie/alternative musicians.
nah lorde criticizing 2010s club music as overproduced and hyper focused on wealth is fair.
