    Pro tip, when cleaning blocks for new head gaskets, lower the piston and put a rag in the cylinder to keep stuff/particles from getting into the piston ring gaps and scoring your walls on the next start. 😉

    Ok I have got to help you out when installing new hydraulic lifters always put them in the same oil that you are using for your engine. But they need to be completely submerged in oil when that’s done you will see bubbles when that stops then and only then you can install them. If this step is omitted you stand a good chance of the new lifters not pumping up it’s like a shock absorbers for your valves and they can’t open your valves properly. I apologize for getting involved but this could be the difference between it running and you pulling your hair out if it’s not explained. It with Great Respect. RR

      Great tip. When I did this one I follow the Kohler manual they didn’t mention soaking but I could see the need. This one started and ran no problem I used it a few days before sending it home

      NP, never knew lawnmower had lifters in then till ran across this video. What is the purpose of them. A friend told me you can't adjust the valves either.

    This thing with the lifters blows my mind. Everything I have ever been taught is just the opposite. You are supposed to submerge the lifters in oil and cycle them to get the air out. That is why I was watching your video. I seen the manual said to do exactly the same thing you are doing with the drill press. Does anyone know why you push the oil out when every other mechanical thing wants you to bleed the air out of hydraulic lifters.

      You have to remove the oil from the lifter so you can compress them enough install the rockers without bending the push rods. The new hydraulic lifters in this video did not have any oil in them so the bit about using the drill press to push out the oil was not needed. Here's the official Kohler vid on the topic: th-cam.com/video/n5V9NyRFOkw/w-d-xo.html

    This is a very helpful video as I am going through the same rebuild. But I thought that valve seal is only needed on the intake side?

    Awesome .... that was very informative !! HUGE Thumbs Up !! Question , what is the process for just changing pushrods in a CH20 with same identical valve train ?? Pull old lifters out and bleed them down & install pushrods like you did here ?? If you loosen everything and remove rockers only without lifter bleed down & try to install everything back, wont the valves open so you lose compression after you torque down the bolts ?? That's the problem I had before I saw this video ... I lost compression with open valves !! Thanks 😊 !!

    • @BSSMALLENGINES
      @BSSMALLENGINES  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If your push rods are bent good chance that the lifters is stuck. Common problem on these

      @@BSSMALLENGINES Mechanic here also, they seem to be moving freely opening & closing all the valves as it turns over tho engine has over 750 hrs on it & lost power in right cylinder , and when I pulled cover off to check valves the exhaust rocker was laying in there as the secure bolt had backed out , I went to reinstall it torqued it down and it seems like the valve opened a bit as I was tightening it down , did the lifter automatically pump up a bit when the push rod came out & eliminated the down force ?? Can it be removed and bled down with downforce like you did using a drill press ?? I've never seen this before , also , it is at TDC and on cam base circle as I'm tightening it !! Not familiar with the non adjustable valve train on these certain kohlers ... Thank You !!

      It’s the same lifter that’s in a small block Chevy when adjusting the valves on a 350 while it is running back them off until they rattle tighten until it just stops then 3/4 of a turn. So yes you’re valve could have moved a little especially if it’s on the exhaust or intake stroke instead of being on TDC these young men a leading you down the correct path I apologize for enter-fearing great job. On a Kohler Command 22 HP engine, you do not have to remove the heads to replace the lifters. All you need to do is remove the valve covers, rockers, pushrods, then you can pull the lifters out with a mechanic's magnet. I just did this on my Exmark zero turn mower.

    • @BSSMALLENGINES

      Valves was replaced on this engine that why the heads was removed

    • @tomt9543
      @tomt9543 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure why, but the Koehler service manual states that you should never use a magnet to remove the lifters! Maybe they just want everyone to buy one of their lifter removal tool!

      Most the time you only need new lifters. This one the valves was damaged so the customer wanted a new everything on the valve train including a new cylinder head

    Why does Kohler say do not use a magnet to remove a lifter.

    • @BSSMALLENGINES
      @BSSMALLENGINES  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question. Only thing I can think of is a cheap magnet could fall apart inside the engine while removing lifter causing bigger issues . People been using magnets for years I say use can use magnets just got to be careful

    • @AaronS11979
      @AaronS11979 ปีที่แล้ว

      When you use a magnet it can have the tendency to magnetize the lifter itself. Then it starts to attract small metal particles which is obviously bad for friction reasons. In this case you were throwing them away so it wouldn't matter much.

  • @woodcutter9193
    @woodcutter9193 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Koehler says in bold print Do not use a magnet for lifter removal, can someone explain why they say this?

    • @AaronS11979
      @AaronS11979 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It can magnetize the lifter itself and then it'll start to attract metal particles and wear faster.
