lil hint... rope.... stuff the cyl with rope bring the piston to TDC place something to hold the flywheel. it will hold valve up then pull rope out.. works the tits.

An easy way to accomplish the valve spring issue: use a leak down tester to pressurize the cylinder to hold the valve out and put a piece of plastic on the end of a deep socket. The socket will compress the spring and the plastic will push the retainers on. A little grease on the keepers will keep them from falling off while you set up the socket with plastic. Maybe this will help someone. Doublewide6 is one of the smartest mechanics I have seen on TH-cam. Thanks for all of the great information tips and tricks.

The left side plug shows signs of oil burning, not from running rich. The oil could have come from the broken valve stem seal. Those engines have hydraulic lifters and you are correct, there is no adjustment. I would check compression on that side now that you reinstalled the valve spring. I have seen the lifters lose pressure from clogged ports which causes the lifter to collapse, leaving the push rod loose. Most often happens on Kohlers that do not have regular oil changes. This sudden loss of hydraulic adjustment can cause the valve keepers to suddenly loosen and allow the valve spring to fall.

I thought my mind was playing tricks on me. It went from a zero turn to tiller. I thought I hit the screen and switched videos but played it back and realized I didn’t. Thanks for the Bonus tiller video repair. Doublewide6 Rocks😅😅😅

Happy New Year!! Put compressed air in the Cylinder to hold the valves closed. Drill a hole in the handle of the collet wrench for your angle grinder. pass a bolt through the hole you drilled into the rocker pivot, or valve cover bolt hole which ever lays out best for your application. Now you have a secure valve staying put and a levered fork to compress the spring. They make a store bought tool for this, but I was in a hurry and said to myself "Self, that tool looks a awful lot like my collet wrench with a extra hole" It worked great and didn't need to wait for UPS to finish the job and get paid. Best of Luck.................

Doublewide...I really love the practical way you go about diagnosing and fixing things. Seems you normally throw in some nice "tricks of the trade" also. Thanks for sharing! Great content!

Air pressure works, but I've used rope stuffed into the spark plug hole. Rotate the engine by hand to compression and it holds the valve closed. Install the spring and keepers. Pull the rope out and you're done.

Bob the minute I saw that Torch spark plug on the tiller I said Nooooo! I always replace them as sometimes they Spark fine in atmospheric pressure out of the engine but won’t light consistently under compression. Just my experience with them!

Bob if you'd have got the spring and keepers back on with just your thumbs I would've been very impressed and in awe.
The audible "click" from your torque wrench was amazing, I need to get one like that. 🤣

Good job on the valve spring.. so hopefully just a carb clean and it should be good ..

A little grease on the valve spring keepers to hold them in place, and a valve spring compressor sure makes the job easier.

that was a headache. good solution though on the retainer installation. If you had an adapter to attach an air hose into the spark plug hole, maybe that would hold the valve in place. maybe adapting a leak down tester.

Put piston to bottom, stuff rope into cylinder thru plug hole, turn engine by hand to compress rope to hold valve closed. Install spring.
And yes command engines have hydraulic lifters.

I've read some kohlers have hydraulic valve lifters.

put compressed air into the spark plug hole with an air hose adapter to keep the valve CLOSED during spring and keepers install!

Valves NOT adjustable? Are there hydraulic lifters inside the motor?

  • @georgesimpson3113
    @georgesimpson3113 ปีที่แล้ว

Use compressed air or a rag to keep the valve closed. I've even used a hose. That's oil on the plug. Grease on the keepers... click... 😁

did you have the piston at tdc to keep the valve from escaping? looks like you need a third hand to hold the valve closed. stuffing the cylinder with rope or cord through the spark plug hole to keep the valve closed.
