    Brother, thank you for this video, I'm late to the party but I lost my best bud Cooper a month ago, he was a Weim, and he absolutely made me fall in love with German Pointers. (I always liked their looks/attitude, and Coop definitely cemented that) I don't want to replace him whatsoever, but I miss having a companion and a good friend. I was looking at getting both a Weim and maybe a GSP or Viszla. I live on a farm, so I love the "guard dog" aspect along with being a huge family dog due to my folks and myself love dogs. Coop always watched over mom in the garden along with helping me check cows, fields of crops, and he'd tag along in the fencing UTV just to "help". I also love that these breeds are great hunters due to I also hunt Waterfowl/Upland game birds ALOT. They also make great companions on Coyote hunts, I never made Coop run a coyote down, more like he'd stay in hiding with me and he learned to growl softly when they'd be getting way to close, I was always glad to have him watch my back out there. I appreciate the breakdown of these amazing breeds, and maybe you'd have some advice for me and what I should consider moving forward.

    Weims are such an underrated breed. Most families aren’t active enough to keep them happy so it makes sense why they aren’t super common. But they make such good family and hunting dogs.

    Weims for life. My weim had the hunting instinct from birth. Gave him a dead pheasant at 3 months and it flipped the switch. He ranges perfect distance and finds birds like no other all with just hunting him. He didn’t need formal training it was already in him.

    • @Rzagski
      @Rzagski 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are fortunate. I’ve had 2 Weims helped train another and a Vizsla. For certain AKC hunting ratings I had to do a lot of training. The retrieving was the easiest but the steady solid point through wig and shot was more challenging due to the strong chase instinct.

    • @OttoTheWeim
      @OttoTheWeim 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Rzagski i agree. While my Blue isn’t perfectly classic in his hold, I have had him hold a picture perfect point on a bird in the open and I couldn’t get him to break and flush it until the bird actually moved. He was just locked. He naturally ranges perfectly and doesn’t stray out of range. He does great for me as a sportsman as he doesn’t compete.

      @@sultanmatteen47 depending off the outside temp (hot days will wear him out sooner) but I have hunted him on hilly terrain for a good 3 hours and he was still good to go. He will run for quite a bit. He will crash when we get home and sleep. If I hunt him real hard and warm weather I like to give him a day to recover but I can hunt him back to back days if I wanted, I just choose to give him a rest day as any athlete would need. That is for hunting and brush busting but just running he will go all day.

  • @williewonka6694
    @williewonka6694 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I've had Weimaraners for about 35 years and am looking, possibly, for a slightly smaller breed for what will likely be my last dog. From what I've learned, there are some temperment differences with the GSP. As the video mentioned, I've found that Weimaraners are fearless and will go after an attacker. I've never owned a gun shy Weimaraner. They have been indifferent to people other than family, and their special person. Oddly, Weimaraners don't seem to whine, like at all, but they love to bark at threats, or if left alone. In the field, they seldom move beyond gun range, as they want to stay close, but not too close to their person. They are generally assertive and will dominate with other dogs. I would appreciate some information on the GSP, if anyone cares to chime in.
    Do GSP typically range further than 50 yards from a person on foot? I don't want to be looking for a lost dog, as I've seen a number of them on opening day running about. Never has a Weim wanted to lose sight of me even for a minute. They frequently look back to make sure where I'm going. However, I think it would be refreshing to have a dog that is more friendly with people and enjoys play with other dogs.

      Shorthaireds can cover crazy amounts of ground fast and efficient without missing much. They're definitely gonna range out farther than most weims, but can easily be trained to hunt closer and check in more often. Gsp's are known for being the most versatile hunting dog for a reason. They can be dialed perfectly to most hunting situations. Depending on the genetics you get also can really make a difference in how your dog instinctively hunts. My current gsp had parents that won field trial competitions, so I knew they were fast hunting, relatively far ranging dogs with exceptional noses, which is exactly what I wanted. Gsp's are also great swimmers and have insane stamina on land or in the water. I've had multiple good water retrieves on Pheasants with my gsp. Hope some of this info helps.

      Not to be rude, but "if you have to ask..." you may not have the money to fund the correct care, vets, nutrition, training etc. Both breeds are working dogs and are very demanding and the price of the puppy is an insignificant fraction of the total cost in their lifetime, and even of the cost of the first two years.

    What about Hungarian Vizsla, is it roughly same of a kind? Just curious, as once saw Weim and Vizsla roaming around together on a walk and noticed that they are both quite similar to GSP (except the colour, of course).

    • @MovieViking
      @MovieViking 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, they may look quite alike except in size and colour, but Vizslas are on average very sensitive (most of them on another scale entirely compared to Weims and GSPs) and react very negatively to any testosterone-prone hunter trying to use hard (read: obsolete) training methods. Using positive-feedback and shaping they become very intelligent and creative problem solvers whether used for hunting, schweiss or any demanding activity. I have owned and trained Vizslas, Weimaraners, GSPs, Labradors, and even one GSD and a Leonberger. I prefer Vizslas, GSPs and Weimaraners over all other breeds, but even though they share some traits they are quite different.

    Gosh, keep your hands to yourself, boy, and get them out of my face, will ye?! You're exaggerating it! That's not even sign language, so what is that supposed to be? It's totally out of tune and unrhythmic, and I can't think of anyone I've ever met who gesticulates so pointlessly and pokes holes in the air everywhere while actually just talking. You have to be careful not to suddenly lift off, it seems. Terrible to watch and listen to. Next time watch your videos yourself before you upload them, ask friends if you have any (btw, is that how you talk to people irl?) or practice in front of a mirror and ask yourself if that still looks normal.
