As a fellow ex-investment banking analyst, I really appreciate the honestly in this video - it takes a lot to come out and talk about the challenges and struggles you faced while in banking. I think its so easy for people in high powered finance roles to be blinded by money and prestige, and lose sight of what truly matters in life. I admire you for taking a risk with the startup and choosing the path less traveled - thanks for sharing!
My dad was in banking in early 90’s. He left after so many of his colleagues became burnt out or worse hooked on drugs to keep going. Yes, it was 100+ hrs a week. He never regretted leaving.
Seeing a trend lately where everyone’s leaving IB. I guess people realised $100K salary for 100 hours work is the same as $40k salary for 40 hours work
Every Dollar saved is then invested and working for you for the rest of your life. There is a big difference between what you can save when earning $40k vs $100k
This is real stuff man. You opened your self to TH-cam, no bullshit, no bragging, just being brutaly honnest with yourself and the world, I really enjoyed this video. Keep going, your content is high grade 😉
It’s scary how I’m being recommended so many videos on people quitting investment banking when majority of the activities and classes I do in school is basically paving the IB pathway :’)
This is insane. I found one of your videos and been watching some of your others as well. My Dad passed away from ALS, insane how we both had this life-changing experience. Hope your youtube channel continues to grow, you have an avid supporter right here.
Great story! I’m currently job hunting for an opportunity to enter the investment banking and I have promised myself that I would only stay for 2-3 years for the money and experience. Eventually, i would still love to start my entrepreneur path. Thanks for sharing your insights! Keep grinding!
Thank you Ben for sharing your personal stories! I am a class of 2015 Berkeley undergrad, now working as an executive for a public listed manufacturing company in China. I have always wanted to experience what it’s like working as an investment banker and your channel gives me the taste of it. Your videos are really clear in logic and genuine in contents. I quit my job as an Engineer last Two years ago after almost 12 years in the field. It was not an easy decision, but life is too short to dread going to work everyday. No amount of money can buy real happiness Lol 😁 but friends I'm not asking you to resign from your job or Abandon your business but be wise!
@Vargas Mendez While I was still in service I planned towards early retirement,my first income I do a normal 9-5, my second income I put it back to work more money because I'm not just after money but the freedom to live on my terms Lol.
@Philip Benjamin There's a lot of investing options (real estate, Airbnb, stocks, crypto ETFS) but my best advice get a professional lead you into profitable one.
@Philip Benjamin I work with a pro (Virginia May Wynne) she's great expert and has been influential to my financial Journey. I recommend her to everyone.
I just graduated from college 7 months ago and your insights about your career and life are quite helpful for me. Looking forward to your following videos~
I came here from Kchoi channel :) Have to say your story really hit home for me. This past few months have really taught me the importance of spending quality time with your loved ones. Although I have also deviated from not thinking just about compensation as much but sometimes it does get to you especially when you live in expensive cities where just the cost of life is astronomical. Happy to hear you are following whats right for you too!
Yup it can be tough forsure especially living in one of those expensive cities. Glad to hear you've been spending more time with your loved ones and thank you for watching! Wish you all the best~

Whenever you think you aren't loved... Remember the ultimate sacrifice was for love! ENDING YOUR LIFE IS NEVER THE ANSWER! life really is fragile regardless of how much money you've made or are making.. it can be taken away so easily at any point.. so yeah, start living and pursuing your dreams!
Thanks for sharing Ben! Diving into the corporate world and then business school, I often ask myself "what is the point of all of this?" It's cool to see you find things that you are passionate about and then chase after it. Looking forward to following more of your journey!
hey ben, thanks for sharing! i'm really sorry about your mom but i'm glad that she inspired you to start living the life you want now and take risks...i know starting a business is hard but hey, if it doesn't work out...you can always go back to investment banking...you're a good guy ben...i wish you the best and good luck out there! also, thanks for sharing the links to those books! i will definitely check them out...also, i really loved how you shared your personal story about how not having electricity motivated you financially...i think we all have a similar story to this and can relate...so again, thank you so much for sharing!
U were fortunate to learn the lessons you did at a young age. Most people will not learn them until into their 40's. For me it was war at 18 that taught me life is fragile as you mentioned but it is also very short. As you iterated there are more important things in life than money. Best wishes to you and yours.
This was super helpful brother. I am finding myself in the same boat. I'm graduating with my MBA in International Finance this August and currently in a Relationship banker role and just not in love with it.. I find myself not loving finance and feel stuck because of how far I have gone with my education. I'm so lost so I am trying to figure out what I truly love and enjoy and not chase the money.
Sorry to hear about your mum. My mum has been diagnosed with the same disease and I have been considering going into IB but this has made me rethink. All the best.
dang so sorry to hear that Henry I feel your pain. If you're able to pay for caregivers and she's able to live near you I think it may be okay to pursue IB at the same time. My mom was in Korea while I was in the states and I was an analyst for a few years, so it made more sense for me to quit and be with family while working on my businesses. Wish you all the best~

In the end, I finally came to this: A job will always be there but the moment to pursue entrepreneurship might not always be
Ben, I'm sorry about your mom. The bay area has a fast pace culture where you kind of lose track of time and either work a lot or buy unnecessary things. Leaving that after some saved up money probably would have been a bit safer but since you had a serious family problem you worked with what you had. Your life journey is very moving and heart touching. U got a very good clarity of thought, which definitely leads to success. yeah there are many times, where a small thought keeps running in the back of the mind but we never peruse that. But at the end always regret that we should have perused it instead of having the dissatisfaction, that we didn't.
My 16 years in the trenches on the sell side sucked. Having said that, irrespective of which house u worked at, it was and still is a great place to learn about investing. Thanks for your insights...I had worked in US state government jobs for more than 20 years at some point as you had a family obligation I also had a personal family obligation which I need to take care of it ....One day I went to my Director told him I am leaving and he asked me to take a week days time out and come back to office...But, I was adamant and insisted on him to accept my resignation and he said I can use my FMLA and come back after one year or 2 years...I was still adamant and requested him to sccept my resignation and I took it over snd handed it over to HR.....Its already more than 2 years now and I do not regret my decision...I think its a gut feeling which says enough is enough and its time for you to take care of other important things in life......Yes..you are absolutely right....
This was an amazing video! New sub. Very top of the line content and I really support all your decisions. What are personal story you shared that is super meaningful and really puts things into perspective. Keep up the work! You are very humbling and genuine.
You are so brave to go after your dream at this young age leaving high paying job. Also soooo smart to figure out what value is important in your life. You will be successful no matter what you do. I have a son also working in investment banking working average 110 hours a week and he wants to leave and start his own business :) Best wishes!
How do you manage to work 110 hours a week and what do they ask you to do during these 110 hours??? I thought Goldman Sachs was unbeatable chen asking their employee to work 90 hours a week but apparently that's not the case! Damn 110hours and he still hasnt burnt out!
thought this would be cliche, but it was very personal and original. nice story, best of luck.
Thanks Eric haha appreciate it

Thank you for this brilliant video!! It really helps as I am currently a college junior and what you said about everything made me confirm my core beliefs and values in life.
A family member having health concerns is HARD!! Keep up the GOOD work!!
Thanks!

Haha thanks Andy
You are so wise for your age. Just remember…it’s not how much you make, it’s how much you save.
Wow this is relatable. I am a 21 year old trying to get a finance intern that drives a 2000 honda odyssey lol.
haha i feel you
Thanks for your insights...I had worked in US state government jobs for more than 20 years at some point as you had a family obligation I also had a personal family obligation which I need to take care of it ....One day I went to my Director told him I am leaving and he asked me to take a week days time out and come back to office...But, I was adamant and insisted on him to accept my resignation and he said I can use my FMLA and come back after one year or 2 years...I was still adamant and requested him to sccept my resignation and I took it over snd handed it over to HR.....Its already more than 2 years now and I do not regret my decision...I think its a gut feeling which says enough is enough and its time for you to take care of other important things in life......Yes..you are absolutely right....
I have alot of respect for your honesty :) thanks for sharing your journey

You are so brave to go after your dream at this young age leaving high paying job. Also soooo smart to figure out what value is important in your life. You will be successful no matter what you do.
I have a son also working in investment banking working average 110 hours a week and he wants to leave and start his own business :)
Best wishes!
ah thank you so much kevin! best of luck to your son :)
How do you manage to work 110 hours a week and what do they ask you to do during these 110 hours??? I thought Goldman Sachs was unbeatable chen asking their employee to work 90 hours a week but apparently that's not the case! Damn 110hours and he still hasnt burnt out!
Thanks for sharing! Appreciated your sincerity!
My pleasure!
