      Have a question if you were anyone knows this please comment back thanks ahead of time.
      The question is on that type of display that's used on those machines what type of display is it actually I don't know and I'm not sure if it's vacuum fluorescent it looks more like some sort of neon display which do exist if I'm not mistaken they're called a kanaplex display.
      I had an old caulk one time that use those.
      I'm pretty sure it's not numitron but it reminds me of the look of a numitron almost.
      What because cool is if somebody came out with a Nixie driver and board that could drive Nixie tubes for a retro hack.
      That would be enough voltage to be able to do this but of course would need to have a voltage reduction internally.
      Also neutrons would be cool too but would need possibly additional power supply for 5 volts.
      To me it those displays that are on there at least two tests when you have did not look like vacuum fluorescent is I had stated it just doesn't look right.
      Any info our thoughts would be appreciated.
      And yes LED would be a good upgrade because reliability for one thing.
      I still remember like the old skee ball machines and all that were entirely electromechanical mostly and having the incandescent bulbs for the score.
      I've dismantled and selfish mold scoreboards and also incandescent moving message signs.

    I just wanted to say what a great job you do with these videos. I live in Leicester in the UK (home of King Richard III) I used to have pinball table myself (Williams Taxi) but I had to let it go when I moved to a smaller house. Your videos keep me in touch and remind me of all the little things that went wrong and that I had to fix over the years. Your self taught approach and explanation is perfect. Don't change a thing, you make me feel like I could have a go.. Good Job 👍

    • @LyonsArcade

      Thank you for the kind words Nigel, those Taxi machines were very fun! The next time I hear about King Richard III I'll think about you :)

    • @TachyonDriver
      @TachyonDriver 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nigel - another UK fan of Ron's repairs here. I wish I had a big enough house to have a real pinball table in...but I'm in a similar situation. However, if you don't mind a digital approach for an old school pinball fix then you could do worse than checkout Zaccaria pinball on Steam. I have it on XBOX. I know it'll never be the same as a physical table experience, but I reckon the physics are good.

    • @PinballZombie
      @PinballZombie 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TachyonDriver Thanks for the info. I actually play Williams pinball classics on the Xbox 360. It actually has A Taxi table on it which plays very similar to my old table. I'll look into the Zachariah thing. Thanks.

    Back in a previous life when I used to build circuit boards we highly valued the gold-plated Augat sockets with the round pinholes. Those tin single-swipe sockets, no matter who made then, definitely suck big time.
    Even though this machine started off in worse shape than the Stingray, it seems like it's been easier to bring back to life. You're almost making me want to go out and buy a pinball machine for home. Almost...

    Classic repair tech mentality... I like it. There's too many homebrew electrical engineers who try and re-invent everything. When doing repair jobs, it's best to consider the way it was designed to work, and solve each of the issues one at a time.

      @LyonsArcade  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Koby, we appreciate you watching!

    • @LyonsArcade
      @LyonsArcade  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Koby I like the way you're thinking too about not reinventing everything, it's hard to put that into words but yeah I see the same thing. People want to do everything better when all of this stuff is a proven design and it's all built with inexpensive readily available parts (mostly). Even the damn battery on the board, yeah they caused lots of damage, yes I wish they weren't on there, but the reason they caused the damage is because they were left on there for 40 years. If I took my t.v. remote control and put batteries in it, then left it in my storage building for 40 years, they'd probably leak too, the problem isn't the battery, it's that somebody left it installed for 40 years, LOL
      I see too many people saying things like "Durr the original design is shit" when in reality we're 40 years in and the stuff is still useable.

    • @LyonsArcade

    So that's why it wasn't making any sound. In the words of Adam Savage (of Mythbusters): "Well, _there's_ your problem!" I've never seen a speaker cone torn up like that, but it shouldn't surprise me; it probably hasn't been touched since the machine was built. Those paper cones can dry rot. Not only was the cone torn, but I bet the surround was made of foam, which can also dry rot.

      These machines have a rough life... if goes like this... they come out, and get the hell played out of them for a couple years, then they break. The operator fixes them out on location, but he doesn't have the right parts, and it all starts going down hill... they get played until they start making less money, so the operator stops really testing or fixing it and the playfield without wax starts to chip up... things break... eventually when the thing is absolutely worn out, they throw it in a storage building for 30 years until I find it, after the rats did!

      You definitely couldn't do those two becuase one was Williams and one was Bally they wouldn't work, but if you swapped in a Bally board from another game, yes it likely WOULD work, but it would be all screwed up, the wrong lights would light up, the wrong scores would score, some of the switches might not work... the outhole, pop bumpers, kickers would probably all work though.

    The sound of playing is do different from the new ones.
    The electro mechanical ones, from the 50s, that had the rolling counters instead of digital or vacuum florescent displays, they sound different than these
    Not many of those old electromechanical ones still in existence
    Every once in a while I see a vacuum florescent display that is dim or burnt out from the 80s
    Those operate in the 240 volt range
    They are florescent bulbs, tiny miniature ones, but they needed high voltage to light those bulbs
    I don't know what they must have thought about when they made them, because they knew they would burn out
    The bulbs that were just bulbs that they would solder on the board, those they knew would only last 4 or 5 years at most
    I guess they figured the device would be thrown out by the time the bulbs burnt out.

    • @LyonsArcade
      @LyonsArcade  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah I believe they thought all these pinball machines would last about 2 years. They had to have known by that time though that operators were keeping them much longer, but they were more interested in selling them new ones than worrying about how their old ones would last, lol. If you think about it, all of this stuff was originally based on the Jukebox model. Jukeboxes were the first real electrical coin operated device... and they had an issue where operators would keep their old Jukeboxes instead of buying the new model. They tried trade in plans and all kinds of things. Then along came the electric Pinball machines, running on batteries at first for the light bulbs. Same thing, they wanted you to buy the brand new one and didn't want you to keep the old ones if they could help it.

    Why do they call it "strapping" the ROM chip when adding those Strapping Jumper wires to convert a ROM chip part number to another ROM chip part number? When the high voltage section on the solenoid driver board fails instead of power going to zero it goes high(forget how much). Causes the displays to burn. Bad design by Bally. Operators would not notice and caused the displays to go bad. Happened all the time. I had a box full of bad bally(and Stern) displays. Good ones are expensive.

The Solenoid driver board has a Filter cap just for the display which is a very high voltage of 180vdc going to the displays. Have you found the filter cap was bad that is causing this issue or resistors that is causing this over voltage display issue? based from your experience repairing early ballys pinball machines with over voltage display issues

    • @LyonsArcade
      @LyonsArcade  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think like Craig mentioned the current burns up a resistor and then the way the circuit is designed the voltage stops being regulated and the full 250 volts goes to the displays instead of the 180 or so the solenoid board regulates it down to... once it starts doing that, the displays burn a lot brighter, but if you leave it like that they start burning up the plasma areas inside, the only way to fix it is to replace the entire glass.
