I rarely see KBG seed out enough to bother anyone, but this year has been an exception. Every KBG yard in my area is seeding really hard. Especially those that were woken up and fertilized early.
+1 to this. Seed out is so pronounced this year that it is the first time in the 40 - yes forty - years that I've been maintaining my lawn here in northern New Jersey that I've even noticed this. I thought my lawn had suffered an infestation of an invasive grass species. Makes me wonder what the root cause (no pun intended) might be, and only thing I can think of is that for the first time that I can remember we had essentially NO snow cover this past winter. Might also explain why several of our established skip laurels and butterfly bushes suffered significant die-back this year.
Perfect timing on this video. I was just searching online as to why my 2nd year PRG lawn went to seed literally between mowings this week. At first I though, how the heck did my mower blade dull this bad since the last cut! 😂 Hopefully it transition out quickly, my lawn is looking like it’s got frosted tips!
I have been using Aneuw PGR in the Spring for the last 2 seasons and it has helped keep this more manageable and shorter in duration. Also has done wonders on stunting Poa A & T.
The music choice for the rye grass segment near the house was fantastic and full of thought. Am trying to develop a plan for adopting rye grass to my pretty well developed blue grass lawn. Keep up the good work
Timing of this video was perfect. Literally was asking myself what the hell this was today! Didn’t see it at all last year, but this year has been very different.
Just a suggestion.. I love your videos and I’ve watched a bunch of your old ones. You say “around this time” in a lot of videos, but watching them a few months or years later, it’s hard to figure out what “this time” is unless you watch right when the video comes out. Would be nice for you to say what time of the season it is for people like me that watch older videos. Thanks for all the amazing info you give!
I would imagine it only takes a few days to a week for editing, processing, and uploading. I usually go by the video date minus a few days. Also, "around this time" could also mean something different depending upon geographic location.
If you are into PGR, you can prevent most of the seed heads from forming if you get that first app out early enough. Reroute all that energy into the roots of the plant :)
OMG! thanks so much for this video. I was literally ripping these out thinking they were foxtails and not safe for the dogs. Then was going to take a bunch into the nursery to see if they could tell me for sure what these were and how to kill them. 🎉🎉 thanks again! I will just keep mowing. .. or swimming. One of those. 😂
We're in a drought with abnormally hot temps, so I'm cutting my Tall Fescue tall at 3.75" to preserve it. I still have seed heads and I'm not really cutting them off. Would I be better off cutting it shorter in a drought here in Chicago?
Just got started into these lawn care. I've been understanding slightly confusing information's around every channel I can find right now and it's whether or not it's a good time to overseed Bermuda right now. Some said it's risky and some said it'll work. Temperature's been hight 70 mid 80 lately. I did some dethatching/ raking > Overseed > Fertilizer > watering with hydretain. Hoping to see even a bit of a result in a couple of weeks.
You don't really need to overseed Bermuda. It's a spreading grass so let it get warmer as far as temps, mow and fertilize and keep up irrigation. It will definitely spread
Not growing like crazy here in the northeast. I see some lawns entering full blown dormancy. Forecast is no rain in sight, full sun and upper 80s this week, 16+ hour days.
If it's cool season you can start the first spray out apps in mid July so you don't need to do much else to prepare. It would be best if the turf isn't dormant when you start your sprays so you may want to think about some irrigation.
Well.. foot in mouth. I said before we haven’t hit “seed head” season here in Oregon yet, I literally just checked on my lawn and what do you know.. seed heads 😅
Hi I have a question the lawn near my cement curbs is dying is there a grass seed that is high heat tolerance in Canada. The rest of my lawn looks great Tia
I'm so glad I discovered your site because I'm learning. I'm not sure if you ever give advice but I could sure use it. I've been trying to grow a lawn for 6 years now! This is the latest result. Anything you want to say besides treat it all up and start over, which is pretty much what I did this year. Maybe I can send you a pic?
Thank you Ryan. I am getting lots this in South Seattle Metro. If you continue to cut lower what will happen to the thicker stalks? Will they eventually die off? Do I have to manually pull them out?
So should I be cutting lower right now for these seed heads? I've been cutting at 3-3.5", I figured it was better to have it get nice deep roots before summer, haha.
No, your lawn is using a lot of energy to produce those seed heads. Stay at a taller height....mow often. Once seed heads are done, do a nice fertilizer application
The problem is once the seed head dies the stalk just sits there brown and makes your grass all brown looking. What i do here in Chicago after the seed heads are done and they brown i make sure we have cooler weather or some decent rain coming up and I mow pretty low to cut those brown stalks off. Then those brown stalks are hidden low and your normal grass will grow and hide them
Fescue generally is the worst for stalkiness and seed heads, rye is second and kbg I rarely see make much seed head unless its just unmowed. Although a bump in nitrogen can definitely push the seed head out quickier
Good Morning, I live in the Cool Season area via the map in Northern California. I have bought a 25lb bag of Rye from your site and was planning on seeding this fall. However, I have read that Rye doesn't do good in high temps. In my area, we get multiple days in a row around or above 100 degrees and most of the summer is mid to high 90's. Will Rye survive this type of heat?
How do you know what height your Swardman is on? Mine didn't come with a sticker or line guage on it and I don't want to get a tool to use every time I adjust the height between the yards.
I really don’t know about Ryegrass but cheap cultivars of Tall Fescue get more seedheads. Buying good grass seed really makes a difference when it comes to seedheads. I really don’t see hardly any seedheads in areas I have renovated with elite seed.
How can i tell what type of grass i have? I live in Pittsburgh, PA, so it's likely KBG, Fescue, Rye Grass, or a mix of it all. "Penn state" mix is very popular around here. I want to overseed with your line of seeds this fall, but i dont know what to buy. And all of the pictures i look at online of cool season grasses all look the same to me.
Is there a general rule for how often to sharpen your mower blades? I have been doing it about every 50 hours, but not sure if it is often enough- mowing about 10 acres. Thanks. Love your videos.
I have a pretty shaded area where moss tends to pop up every year. I see products you can get at local hardware stores? Is that sufficient for treating with one, maybe two apps?
Hard to believe u guys are that far behind in the season. That stage for us in NC was 2 months ago maybe. Glad it's over lol. Looks like the test plots are going to be fire this yr. 🔥
I don't have this problem of 'stalky' grass. Probably because mine is equal parts weeds, moss and grass. It's looks doesn't really change throughout the year... 😐
Great video!! A week ago I decided that I don’t like the 4ft x 30ft mulch area of my backyard and want grass instead. So I started removing mulch on Friday and laid seeds and finished the rest of it today and seeded the rest. I used Kentucky 31, my father in law said it was too late in the season(we’re in Maryland) and that it won’t grow which made me sad. Do you think my grass will grow? I desperately want grass in this area. Thanks so much!!
Yes, once temps get into the 80s regularly, you aren't going to have much success. Late spring is usually too late ... mid April would have been better.. I also have a cool season lawn (central Indiana). Fall is your best time ... be prepared to put seed down in the two week period starting labor day.
For the seed you've already put down and you still want to give it a shot ... water a LOT, keep ground moist but not flooded. My fear here, though, is that the weeds will thrive, but the grass seed won't.
It's not too late. Kentucky Blue grass will germinate in May and June. However, it will be hard to keep it alive during July and August because of the intense heat. You'll have to water a lot in the hot months to keep newly germinated KBG alive.
Given everybody’s advice that it wouldn’t grow I decided to forget about it and try in the Fall. We had 3 weeks intense drought between May and June and I never watered the seeds nor took care of them. We’ve just had a couple of weeks of intense rain(June to July) and this grass grew out of control!! It’s patchy since I didn’t take care of it but the grass that grew looks strong and stable. I’m planning to fix the area in the Fall, I’m done with yard work for now 😂
Any one know about biocides I’ve made a huge mistake I’ve sprayed my paving to remove moss and algae and it looks like I’ve killed the edges of my lawn😢

Focus on your soil instead of the plant. Do a soil test, correct the pH of needed. Organic fertilizer will stay in the soil a lot longer Mow tall, mow often , and water when needed. It will take time but the soil is where everything starts!
@stegs mowing bluegrass or rye that was genetically chosen to be closer to the ground (which is what most newer homes get for sod) is not going to work very well and causes a lot of issue with fungus. It's not quite a one size fits all option.
Hey Ryan, I had my soil tested a couple weeks back. As I suspected, it came back with extremely high amounts of Calcium, hence why my ground can be hard as a rock when it doesn't rain for awhile. What would be the best way to bring this down so it can be more loose? My PH level is hovering around 7.2. Thanks.
No. A little less than .1 per app so you're not putting out much at all and it's going directly to the leaf of the plant first. I think it's actually the reason I have done much better with fungus control
