    Bear with me: I grew up on punk, but my older cousin was my access to having fun (drinking, smoking, and partying) when we were in school. He was a nu metal/post grunge guy and him and all his friends always brought me to the Xfest concerts where I would go just to get blunts and beer and maybe be around a girl (I was like 14). One year he and his friends were hyped for Three Doors Down, so they rolled about 10 blunts and bought enough beer to go around. All I knew about the band was this song, and I kept singing it to myself, in particular the chorus going into the bridge where he goes "YeEeEaAaAhHHh". Then the band came on, everyone was at the edge of their blankets. We were 9 blunts in and I was probably the highest I've ever been, it felt surreal. When Kryptonite came on I was so fixated on the singer, each chorus waiting for the Yeah, and every time it didn't come I would get more anxious. I looked around to see if anyone else was anticipating it as much as me, but they seemed fine. They sailed through the bridge without a year. It felt like a century had passed since they started playing. Just when I thought the song would go on forever without it, he delivered. And that is my 3 Doors Down story.

  • @maroonstranger8277
    @maroonstranger8277 3 ปีที่แล้ว +29

    absolutely love this series, but I gotta say... I think Pat's missing the element that makes these songs so popular in the first place: sing-along-ability. The fact that they have repetitive lyrics, super simple chord progressions, notes that anyone could reach... is the exact reason they're so widely beloved. For us non-musicians, it's just fun to pour your voice out into every note when this song comes on the radio, because it's so accessible. So yeah, no argument that it's a technically impressive song (just the opposite lol) but that's not the only thing that makes music worthwhile. Music isn't only a spectator sport! It's also for singing along drunkenly at a party, or humming while you do the dishes, or rocking out when you're angry on the drive home from work. I think a lot of aficionados forget that.

    • @lidbass
      @lidbass 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You make a very good point, but there is no reason why you can’t write a popular song and do it well. For your reference: almost anything that came out of Motown, We Will Rock You by Queen, almost anything by Stock Aitken and Waterman in the ‘80’s, the very existence of Coldplay, and that’s just off the top of my head. The point here is that this is a bad popular song done badly. If you want to jump around, sing and generally enjoy yourself, then absolutely go for it: it’s your right to do so. Some of my favourite songs are technically absolute dross and yet I dance around the room like an idiot! But I recognise that they are dross. Technically…
