    Hey this is great I don't see many students talking about their experience on the degree. I'm currently in my last year of undergraduate and the amount of mental breakdowns this course has given me is immense. Especially doing phonetics and sometimes the very emotional topics about neurological conditions. I'm still unsure what I feel about this career but I'm going to get through the degree

      @@sbfly1054 hey! I ended up finishing the degree. I'm not currently going straight into speech and language though I got a job at aviva for the meantime, although I'm still passionate about the job and hopefully will find a role in it in the future that I will find fulfilling :)

      Hello Scarlett, thank you for your comment! It means a lot. I agree it was really hard! Well done for finishing! I think it is difficult because it is a career that sets you up to work as a Speech Therapist, which sounds kind of limiting? And on the course, when you see all the really difficult or complicated sides you end up thinking maybe I don't want to do this (maybe not for everyone but that's what I felt at times). But what I have really realised is that when practising, you can specify in an area that is suited to you and your interests, where you don't have to think about or use some of the elements that were learnt on the course. :)

    Thanks for this video, it’s super helpful! I’m starting the MSc SLT course at UCL this coming August so it’s great to know this stuff beforehand!
    Your video on prepping for interviews was also really helpful, although weirdly I had the opposite experience to you with the City and UCL interviews. Had my City one first and got on the waiting list. Then had the UCL one second and I much preferred the questions and got an offer a few days later! So excited to start! Thanks for your content x

      Hi Rita! I’m also going to start this course at UCL this August! Had my interview on 4th Jan and received an offer the next week! I’m also very excited to start! I have a group chat on wsapp (there’s only a few people currently)! Do you want to be added?

    Hi Emma! Loved this video, I am hoping to start a postgrad in speech and language therapy next year and I am currently trying to gain some relevant work experience. I just wondered how much work experience you think is necessary to get onto a SLT course?

    • @emmajoan8283

      Glad you enjoyed! I think get as much as you can and apply and if you don’t have enough you can re apply. Also I think try to think of anything you’ve already done that require the skills to be a speech therapist and include that as experience.

    I'm glad I found this channel. Love your honestly. I've finished BA Hons in Integrated working with children and families(Full Time) and looking for options what to do next. I just realised it might not be for me if its super intense I'm not sure I'll be able. Also never seen SLT with an accent and being polish with a strong accent not sure I could be SLT. Do you know anyone with foreign accent being SLT? please be honest.

      Yes I know several SLPs with strong foreign accents. They are very successful. It might depend on where you live. I live in NYC which is a very diverse city.

    Great video! I was wondering if you could do a video on personal statements for the Msc? And also did you have to do a lot of work experience before your course, and if so, what kind of stuff did you do?

      Hey Matteo, I do have a video where I speak about application for the MSc that I think you might find that helpful? I did get quite a lot of experience as I had time and 2 years out- I did some shadowing with speech therapists in hospital, I volunteered in a nursery, I did the City Lit course and worked for the Alzheimers society :) Hope that's helpful.

    Hi Emma, Great Video. I've been offered a place on a masters fast track degree. I have a 1 year old and two older children who are both under 8. I'm really excited about starting next year but on reflection having watched Lots of video's I want to ask if there is any days 'off' to do reading etc...what is a typical day? Have you met any fellow students who have a young family? Have they coped?!

      Hello, I met so many parents on the course, who were all great and did well from what I have heard! I think it will be harder for obvious reasons but we had reading days which were mostly for catch up on Fridays.

    Hi Emma, thanks so much for your videos!
    I am looking to apply for an SLT masters next year, but I’d be 25 (going on 26) at the time of starting. I’m feeling a bit self conscious about this - silly, I know. I was wondering what the age range is like in your cohort?

    • @emmajoan8283
      @emmajoan8283  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Alice, Good luck!! Oh don't worry about that as there is such an age range. I reckon (this is a big assumption) that the average age of people on our course is late 20s to 30. Some people have been working in other jobs for many years before starting and then others are straight out of undergraduate so I wouldn't worry at all.

    • @taradc6037

      Go for it! I’m in the U.S. but I started my masters program for speech at 28 years old and many of my other classmates were also in their later 20s. I also had a classmate in her early 40s👍🏾 Hope this encourages you!

      Hey don't worry about it! I have friends on my course from age range of 20-40. Everybody on your course is likely to be lovely because of the profession so I wouldn't worry too much!

    Hi Emma, I've applied to city for Bcs speech and language therapy in September. Would you say the undergraduate course is just as intense as the masters? xx

    • @emmajoan8283
      @emmajoan8283  ปีที่แล้ว

      Good Luck!! Hope it went well. I think it is still intense as there is lots of content and as it is likely your first degree you are learning a lot about how to write good essays, analyse research etc (which the masters does too, but there is an expectation you have some of these skills to begin with). However, the content is the same but spread over the 3 years. It depends how you look at it, but I think it will still be really challenging ! I have had a few comments from Undergrad students highlighting how hard it is. But from my experience, although it is hard it is so rewarding and worth it !
