I'm resting under a blanket with cat on top, watching this show and thinking how well written and intelligent it is, with the international intrigue, and Bennett Cerf reference.

From watching this series a few times, what struck me about it was that it wasn't silly, and as others here commented: occasionally the endings were both happy and sad...and that's what life is really like, isn't it.

Sid Ramin was the musical composer for The Patty Duke Show. He also composed, "Music to Watch Girls By," released by, The Bob Crewe Generation and made a hit by Andy Williams. If you listen to that instrumental, you will note the very same slick style on display. Very talented man, he won an Academy Award for his work helping to score the movie, "West Side Story." Guy was a genius!

Patty Duke (may she rest in peace) was an astonishingly gifted and humble actor. In her memoir, CALL ME ANNA, she downplays her great gifts at every opportunity. She calls it "luck." Some luck. I wish she'd lived to work with Streep or Lange.

Technically, J.R. thought Martin had quit, if I remember correctly. Though he might also have been fired as most sitcom bosses are wont to do.
I would have to re-watch that episode.
BTW, another "Technicality" is that in the pilot episode Martin was played by an entirely different person...so J.R. could sort of claim he never fired THIS Martin.
