I sat down with my 16 yr old daughter and talked to her about this. ( Not our first conversation about it). But, I needed her to know the real world consequences of this. As a mother, I have to make sure that we keep this open dialogue. Addiction issues have run in my family deeply. My heart aches for this family. I don't know how I would cope through such a huge loss. Parents are supposed to go first. I don't want to outlive my child.

@@KILLEMALLTWICE I'm not sure why your asking. But, her Dad lives about six city blocks away from us. He hasn't seen her in a year and a half. He started a new family, and has put that family before his his daughter. That being said, I have never trash talked him to her. I've let my daughter form her own opinions. I wouldn't be doing my daughter any justice by trashing her father. My daughter and I have always had a close relationship though. She is a really good kid. She's never had any issue with drugs or alcohol. I just felt it was good to make sure that I talk to her about it though. I have many family members who have had issues with addiction. And some studies have shown that addictive behavior can run in families.

sorry for their loss; parents, please listen - just because your kid is making straight As and preparing for college does not mean he isn't also stressing over the nonsense that you upper middle class folk impose on your kids and doing hard drugs to blunt the edges. these kids are abusing adderall and all manner of drugs (they're not experimenting, they're abusing - first they did it with alcohol, now it's drugs). also, drug dealers aren't laying in wait to pounce on your kid - your kids find them and know who they are!

@Jon Dough look honey, I'm speaking from experience and observation as a middle class parent (if you will). raising children is the hardest thing you will ever do. having resources at your disposal, hovering over children, stressing them to death over grades, appearances and schools, even drug testing them are all things I observed and on occasion participated in during my child's high school years. to date, five of his peers from high school have died of opioid deaths (all before age 30). I'm not envious, just encouraging everyone not to be deluded into believing that external indicators of "normalcy" and "All American-ness" are often misleading...

I just find it disturbing that medicine is called drugs. I can see why they cause more problems than what it solves just look at all the side affects. I will say something is missing in kids lives to be thinking about doing drugs. The thought never crossed my mind I knew it is bad. Seems like people use it to try to escape the reality of something happening in their lives. Therapists are not going to solve your problems they look at this as a job, and paycheck. Friends, and family should take the time out to actually get to know their children, and spend time with them. If your lifestyle is to busy that you need other people to raise your children don't have them. I'm not judging them but I know there is more to it than what has been said. Maybe talking about drugs enables some children to want to try them as a part of their rebellious attitude.

@@ac4498 Look parents can't be with their children 24/7 anyone who says they are is a liar. What is not right is bringing children in to the world if you can't spend time with them, and actually bring them up in a loving home while talking to them. If you have a busy life style, and need other people to raise your children for example. Children just seem to be treated as property more than a human being with emotions, wants, and needs.

also just because you know what they are does not mean other people do. lots of times it just depends on the environment you grow up in. some kids know about weed and cocaine but not about rx drugs. some kids know about weed but not other drugs. some kids know about alcohol but not about any types of drugs. some kids know about all of the types of drugs and so on and so forth. sometimes it can depend on whether people have actually educated or informed you of them and the effects other than “it’ll make you chill or feel good.”

"He was so careful about his health" "he new the risks"
No mom, he was just a kid. He wasn't careful because kids aren't careful and they do not know the risks, no matter how much they research because they are by design cynical about everything, are really bad at making decisions and have very little self-control. Add to this a never ending pandemic and the chance to do something new and things like this happen. Your boy was a very normal child, and someone out there took advantage of that developing mind full of dreams.
Sometimes we think so highly of ur kids that we forget that their brain is still developing. This was clearly an accidental overdose and I hope that whoever is responsible is apprehended and charged for what he/she did to your beautiful boy.
    This person must face justice.

You and many others really do not understand Fentanyl. It should not be in any drugs. Taking a xanax here and there does not mean someone has a drug problem. He was not an addict necessarily. He got unlucky because he got a drug cut with fentanyl. One can argue whether he should have tried that to begin with but whether we like it or not experimentation is a thing for many kids. If drugs were legal and regulated we would not have deaths caused by fentanyl. There are people not abusing drugs, buying xanax from a dealer because it is cheaper than their insurance, who die because it is laced with fentanyl.

Insensitive. Nothing wrong with experimentation. How do you know he had a drug problem? Taking a xanax is not usually an issue in a normal dose once in a while but FENTANYL EASILY kills. The issue is the drug dealers and cartels are cutting drugs with Fentanyl. This could have been the first time he ever even tried the drug. If anything, this situation shows that drugs should be legal and monitored so when someone gets something they know what they're getting!

Their son was discovered at 4:24 pm Sunday; Dr Bergman posted regarding the death of her son also on Sunday-not possible for her to know anything besides her own guessing after saying someone from SnapChat delivered at their home, to their son tainted RX drugs. All media reports *solely* source Dr Berman & her husband with their claims. That SOLE statement by parents led an *OFFICIAL POLICE* statement YESTERDAY saying: “The case is currently with the Los Angeles Coroner’s Department & a preliminary investigation leads us to believe prescription drug use may have been involved.” ~~~An autopsy is usually completed within a day or two but final results of a toxicology report take 5-6 weeks. EVEN a PRELIM report on a dead body looking for tests regarding drugs to help police investigation can take several days or even weeks.

My daughter is 16 also sheltering at home and she doesn’t “receive mail” that we don’t know about, or wouldn’t check first...she doesn’t go out on her own, for air or anything, I guess we owe that to living in rough part of Brooklyn, but parents you MUST check in on your kids! Every know and then we do random “phone checks” where right in front of her, I’ll read through her texts and check her Instagram, etc. She doesn’t get offended anymore because I tell her, “if your carrying yourself correctly, then you have nothing to worry about, these checks are just maintenance and good parenting ...when you’re a parent one day you should absolutely do the same”...I tell my daughter that she should be offended if we didn’t check up on her. But these kinds of things come with trust that’s built over years starting when they’re little.

No matter how close you are or how much you try to stay connected, teenagers that you may have sent to their rooms as punishment when they were little suddenly become bedroom recluses. They need and want their space. You can't constantly be in their face. A family schedule for meals or a movie night is pretty much set. But the rest of the time it's like any healthy relationship. Sharing this tragic event, I hope and pray, will save others the loss and grief. May God be with them during this very difficult time.
