  • That's right guys! I actually do stock replacements of parts on my daily drivers as well! It's quite therapeutic actually, since everything installs as it should.
    Today, we take a look at alternator replacement. First we diagnose to ensure that the alternator is in fact bad, what causes the light to turn on, and go through the actual replacement with relative ease.
    Remember before doing any of these types of repair jobs to ALWAYS disconnect your battery + cable at the battery first!
    Thanks for watching!

    Further to my previous comment, got the alternator replaced, but found it a much easier job to do after removing the viscous fan with its housing. Literally a 10 minute re and re. Allowed much easier access to the alternator, and importantly, the serpentine belt which had many cracks. The few $$$ it cost for the necessary fan removal tools was money well spent.

    Thanks for your vid, but I have a 2002 e53 4.6is, and my alternator doesn't look like the one you installed. I have a replacement, but will the process be the same? I'm not a mechanic, so I'm learning as I go along. Thanks for any tips

    • @Garageaholic
      @Garageaholic  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey!! You actually have the 4.6is v8 m62tub46 engine and that’s much different. So much so in fact that your alternator is liquid cooled, so you’ll have to actually drain your coolant to replace it! However I think there’s a replacement bypass version that did not liquid cooled.
      It’s in the same general location as my m54 engine.

    Looks like the power steering fluid was running down and took out the alternator. Wouldn't it be much easier with the fan removed?

    Is the voltage regulator part of the alternator or do I need to buy that separately when replacing?

    • @Garageaholic

      It can be part of the alternator, depending on your supplier

    Hey man can you please help me out. I have a 2003 BMW X5 30i with the automatic transmission. I have a problem when on a cold start my car will go in reverse but won’t go in drive until the engine heats up. What should I do?

    • @Garageaholic
      @Garageaholic  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Drain your fluid and replenish with good trans fluid. That’s my suggestion.

    Hey my x5’s battery and battery light wasn’t on but after I let it sit for a while because of quarantine I went to start my car and the car wouldn’t start so I bought I new battery from Walmart the car started however the battery light is flickering on and off, the car is drivable and feels good overall but when I come to an abrupt stop sometimes the car shuts off and all the lights come on in the dash (brake, oil battery etc...) could it be I bought the wrong battery or is my alternator going

    • @Garageaholic
      @Garageaholic  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Alternator definitely going! If that light flickers that means that the system voltage is less than 12V

  • @dassehmc
    @dassehmc 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@manueltovar6771 Hey, yes you DO need to disconnect the battery for sure. That's a live wire, the thick wire going to the alternator. I did not film that but it was absolutely necessary! Sorry for the late reply.

    I'd also comment that you should get the correct alternator for your car - if you call the BMW dealership and give them your VIN, they can tell you which is correct for your X5

    • @Garageaholic
      @Garageaholic  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah for an m54 alternator, you don’t need to go those lengths. Use realoem, last 7 of VIN tells you the appropriate part without having to call the dealer.
